I think purple is my favorite belt so far. This is the first belt where I feel solid everywhere. I know moving forward that I will just get better as a whole instead of trying to piece everything together at blue and white belt.

I Love my purple belt. I can try to chase the brown and blackbelts, because I have nothing to loose against them and I am experienced enough to destroy the white and blue belts. Last but not least I have lots of real competitive and fun matches against other purple belts. For me it is the perfect belt so far

This is so true! I started BJJ in my late 20's progressed to blue belt and then quit for about 12 years. I finally started training again about 5 years ago - now in my 40's. Taking that insanely long period of time off from training is one of my biggest regrets in life. I always say, if only I had continued just once a week it would have been so worth it. Never quit!

Great motivational talk!! As an older purple (38), sometimes its hard to get motivated to go train and put your body through that stress, but the problem of not training is even worse as your peers continue to improve while you fall out of shape. I ALWAYS feel better driving home after a night of training, no matter how I felt BEFORE deciding to go train!

Its been almost a year that i got my purple belt i have competed twice, and i haven't gotten a stripe for sure this is the hardest belt level in my opinion because expectations are set high on you in the academy and on tournaments, honestly there are times when i think about quitting, but i see the 6 years i have put onto jiu-jitsu and all the sweat and blood and injuries have shown me not to give up or quit jiu-jitsu. E1IVAN 90 No problem u definitely know more than I do. I'm a striker who recently got into mma and grappling. I'm sure I'll get a blue belt soon, but belts don't foo anything for me. I realized I posted on this video over a year ago. I think it had to have been not too long before I got my purple. Now I’m at purple for about 1.5 years and this video really hits me. I know I’m improving but I think with purple belt we become so much more cognizant of all of the MANY little details that we need to improve on in order to reach the black belt level. Anyhow hopefully one day I’ll be able to visit your gym and train. I made it up to Tri Star MMA and Marcelo’s gym in NYC this year. When I’m in Boston I’m definitely heading to see you Bernardo. Bernardo thanks for the great video! I've been a blue belt for almost 3 years and I try to train 4-5 days a week. I'll be 38 soon. I'll be 47 this month, and got my purple belt in November. In my first three years, I suffered a long list of injuries: hand, neck, ribs, ankle, knee...the usual. Then, I changed the way I train and have been training injury-free for over two years, now. Basically, I stopped caring about "winning" a roll, and focused on defense, pace and control. I pay attention to my breathing and try to stay mentally calm and present. As a result, I actually roll more, have solid defense, better positional awareness, more fun, and more submissions to boot!

Bernardo--thank you so much for sharing this. I received my purple belt from Mestre Helio Soneca Moreira and later moved and had to start training at a different gym with new guys. A highly competitive gym where I roll with guys half my age who are very hungry. I love jiu-jitsu but its tough. So many champions make videos showing fancy moves, or highlights of them winning matches, and you never see any of them talk about how discouraging it can be when you're training jiu-jitsu. How you get smashed and ask yourself why you're even training because you're not getting better. I wonder if guys like Marcelo Garcia, Andre Galvao, Rickson, or Buchecha ever felt discouraged or if they just always won and jiu-jitsu was easy for them. Thanks for being a "normal" guy who just happens to have a very deep understanding of the art.

My school is the hardest most technical school I've ever been in.... every roll is a war. When I do open mats at other schools I appreciate the respect I get from other purple belts. Brown and black belts appreciate the tough rolls and respect the academy that I train at. I'm truly blessed and am so happy that everytime I hit the mats my teachers knowledge makes me feel like a white belt. I'm exactly where I need to be. Academy wise and belt rank. 2 stripe purple belt from AZ!!!!

I had stopped after receiving my blue belt. I had moved right after, my second child was born shortly after and with two kids and a rotating on call work schedule, I never knew when I was going to get I get out of work. I was away from the mats for a little over 5 years. Now I’m back, a little older, hurt a little more, but I’m so happy to be training again. Wish I didn’t take the time off. I can see and feel how much I’ve lost in that time. But the important thing is I had made the decision to come back to it, and I can feel the difference and skills and techniques coming back. I fell behind for sure. But it’s a life long road, and I will continue to move along this path and learn this amazing art.

I was a whitebelt for 2.5 years (between countries and gyms), but only 8 months as a blue belt. Got my puple in february, just before this corona situation. Happy to say that whilst I've had a lot of days where I didn't want to train, I never once thought about quitting. I've also had the feeling of being "stuck" and not improving, but that changed after I started competing. Looking forward to going back to the grind once we're allowed in our gym again.

But I'm learning so much now as it is, I'm not even remotely concerned with it. The white belts at his school are tough as nails though. His brown belts are ridiculous. Rising tide raises all ships. This is similar to learning music. A lot of people I know got to grade 5 in their piano, guitar etc. and at that point you can play, you can play most popular songs, know how to do a bunch of the basics fairly well and make non musical people think you are "good" and at this point if you really want to start getting better you begin to really start reading music, working on the small finessing points and it becomes a much smaller but subtle step up to grade 6, and then another small step to 7 which is pretty close to grade 8 but you still need a tiny bit of tweaking. To get to grade 8 and then to get above that you need to really love the craft of music and want to improve on yourself down to smaller and smaller levels of skill. A lot of people start learning music to play songs, they do a bit, are excited, then they learn a few more tricks until they aren't beginner and are ""good"" but then the step up from that requires a lot more commitment and patience down to ever more minute but crucial levels of detail. I guess it's like that :) it's not for everyone, even though it is definitely possible for anyone determined enough to be disciplined to learn and practice

I may admit Purple belt is a difficult stage , it’s like being a middle child . Your in The middle of Spazzy white belts , Blue belts , Brown & Black belts . White & Blue belts go for the kill against purple belts & Brown and Black belts as well . Purple belt it is a Hard stage 😓😓😓.

Hi Bernardo, I’m a white belt that has been training for about 2 years. However, I have had to move schools every 6 months because of my work and because of this I only have one stripe. I train 4-5 days a week and I usually beat most white belts and some blue belts but I feel my new instructor has not noticed. This is very demotivating because after 2 years I feel like I should have more than 1 stripe. Do you think I should talk to my coach? Thank you for your videos, I subscribed to your channel!

I feel like this as a white belt with one stripe. I dont feel like im learning defense because i sitll get tapped by my peers and i know i have improved but i am unable to submit someone. I feel like im being taught badly like the focus is too much on offense rather tahn defense as a white belt..

Man you repeating yourself, It took me 2 years to get my brown belt, training real hard 2-3 times a week at least an hour each session. And let me tell you , purple belt was the easiest of them all - 8 months I spent on purple - blood and sweat. But it was worth it, I have grown as a human being and my jj skyrocketed. Oss

My problem is: I think that I do not deserve my Purple Belt. Just when I received it I had serius knee injury (torn meniscus). I haven't train for almost a year (surgery, rehabilitation etc). And now what? I feel like I am starting from the beginning. But...with purple belt.
@WolfManJammer

mnj01 It’s just an injury. Rust from lack of mat time affects every belt level. Your coach promoted you for reasons he/she saw fit. Resilience might be one of those reasons.

Actually being a purple belt is the perfect end game for many.It means your Jiu jitsu skills are strong enough to defend against blackbelts just enough to be able look good and lose on the mat or on the street possibly get lucky with some good strikes or at least be able to run away knowing your outclassed . lol..

Defiantly purple belt. It’s the belt where you find who you’re going to be. What’s your game. As white and blue your just learning techniques.

No, if you've done the hard stuff at blue (which you should have). A purple belt is basically a black belt with less refinement, then purple to brown is literally the cosiest ride you will have in jits. Should not be that hard...if it is maybe you got your purple a bit early or need to train a bit more.

I feel purple is over half way to black. It takes on average 6 yrs to get purple and 4 years later for black.
@walkingcorpse1224
@walkingcorpse1224 2 года назад
Fack no... Blue belt to me was the worst and hardest. But that may have been due to me being an Ultra Heavyweight. Ultra Heavyweights normally under a good instructor take longer to upgrade in Jits, because we have a tendency to confuse strength with technique. Though not on purpose, we have to learn control before learning technique. I'm gonna be getting my Brown Belt soon next year, and yeah, Blue Belt was just the absolute worst, Purple to me seemed the most fun, White Belt was whatever, I honestly forgot what it was like being a white belt, and I've been training for a solid 10 years already, training an average of three to four days a week and sometimes five if I really feel like I'm up to the task, two hours a day. I competed four times a year, tho now, I do definitely wanna compete more that I'm making more money.

The belt system is deeply flawed. It is imprecise and driven by money and politics. That said: it’s not completely meaningless, but I would like to see it substantially reformed.

Blue belt is 100% the hardest belt...that belt will take your heart and soul. There are lots of tough points where your technique gets worse and this is extremely discouraging - It really weeds people out.

I'm a purple belt I disagree with You when I was a blue belt it wasn't as hard because of blue belt people are not really expecting as much as from you. Blue belts are still rookies in many ways it's kind of like the military white belt is a soldier blue belt is like a sergeant purple belt is like a lieutenant or Captain so at that level you're considered like an officer and more is expected from you and then of course Brown is Colonel and black is general and I guess red belt will be like a five-star general I mean I'm just throwing the scenario out there that was given to me. A blue belt is basically you have the basics in a purple belt they expect you to take the basics and then start to be crafty with it and that is where people really criticize you.

I think it's white (no stripes) belt. You don't know much, whatever you do know doesn't work on anybody, you can't submit anyone unless you have been doing it for a while, you get your ass handed to you every training, and on top of that you have to stay motivated to go and get your ass handed to you..the academy might not expect a lot from you at this point, except turning up, but, for yourself, if you put the bar high for yourself, I think this is the most challenging belt..then again, I am not purple, so I can't speak for that of course..I just have to wait and see..will get back in a few years..
