This is encouraging. There are 3 of us white belts who all 3 stripes and close to the same weight. But I’m 39, then they’re 29 and 19. We almost always stalemate with one another. I had a awesome roll with my 19 year old friend, but couldn’t finish him last week. I forget that those 20 years are a big deal as I’m getting older.

I started BJJ 8 months ago and just turned 51 a month ago. I’m fortunate in that I have good muscle mass, explosive power, and don’t break easily. Of all the things you mentioned, I think I’m still spazzing a little when I’m winded. Endurance is my age-related weakness that I’m working on, but overall I’m happy with my ability to grapple very effectively with blue belts and much younger opponents. This video definitely put some things in perspective for me. Thank you.

having to be able to dominate lower (=white) belts as a sign of blue belt can be a tall order. I am a smaller guy (recent blue belt) and most of my opponents have 30-60 pounds on me. Even a white belt who spazzes and uses a lot of strength can be a chore in this case. They won't usually submit me, but I struggle with dominance.
@RobotDolphin
@RobotDolphin Год назад
Remember that there can be a big difference between a completely untrained opponent and a white belt with 3+ months of training.
@robertg6343
@robertg6343 Год назад
I wouldn't sweat it bro, not all white belts are the same. Even one who's been coming consistently for 6-12 months can be a handful for a recent blue belt. Some are naturally Uber athletic or have hulk like strength. We have one who was a multiple time state wrestling champ in highschool and once in college. I always describe it as a diagonal line graph; with the vertical being the weight disparity and the horizontal the required skill disparity. So if someone only outweighs you by 5lbs it won't take much more skill to beat him but if it's 50lbs the gap in skill has to be that much higher.
@tylernorman25
@tylernorman25 Год назад
I think what he's really looking for is the use of fundamental techniques. Even if the potential blue belt doesn't dominate the heavy untrained opponent. Shrimping away, getting the under hook, coming up and disengaging, or being able to sweep them to get on top.

Join the club, man. I'm 40 and get super regular injuries. A few things I would advise you do immediately to help that: 1. Get the fuck off simple carbohydrates and move to keto and 16-hour IF, now. This will massively reduce any inflammation you have and help your clarity as well in BJJ 2. Setup a solid warmup routine and do regular workouts focused on mobility and conditioning for BJJ. This is a subject unto itself but will really help in injury prevention. Stay the course, enjoy :)

So my kids train under a 5th degree black belt who trained with Ricardo Almeida and I was looking at a different school a 3rd degree black belt but he's under a 8th degree black belt Rigan machado who is top 10 BJJ instructors in the history of BJJ. It’s always interesting to me how there’s absolutely no standard in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu anymore. Some of the older Gracies I grew up with focus on the martial arts aspect the self-defense aspect, Other gyms maybe like this one seem to be focused more on jiu-Jitsu on Jiu Jitsu. No curriculum per se, Just a general “these are the areas I want to see you improve on” it saddens Me that we have gotten to the point in such an amazing art, that we allow each school to determine what a belt means. How can you call it the same martial art at that point. I’m definitely not flaming your video. I’m just upset to see where things have gone from the 90s to now. I wish we could consolidate training and make it universal. Because they’re a vast difference between black belts now, and especially blue belts

@@TheFalconryApprentice Maybe could’ve worded it better. What I mean is the sport is evolving exponentially and is at a higher level than ever before. @TheFalconryApprentice
@TheFalconryApprentice Год назад
@@thechief5624 that’s exactly my point there’s zero standard across the entire community. You could grab one blue belt from each school and they would all be completely different. Just because the instructors are advance doesn’t mean his / her students are. The comment that I originally made, was the lack of standards within our community. It has nothing to do with the evolution of technique. It has something to do with no governing body so a black belt can award the blue belt for no reason at all. When I award belts I try to stick with IBJJF guidelines, But even that not everybody agrees with
@TheFalconryApprentice

@@thechief5624 also this comment is logical fallacy based on hasty generalization. You and I don’t know all the jiu jitsu people in the world. It’s impossible to surmise that conclusion.
