I think you should revive the, "So what are you waiting for? Even you can grow Purple Daydream Loropetalum." at the end. It's perfect for this channel.

I just planted this in my garden last weekend! Planted it in front of a sunshine ligustrum as recommended by one Jim Putnam in an older video :)

@Mary Lovejoy Hello, I hope you are well. I just wanted to ask you what substrate do you use to plant this beautiful purple daydream plant? Do you put any extra ingredients in the substrate? Like humus, charcoal, clay, pine bark? Thank you in advance for your response. 💚

Me too! Well, I did it a few years ago. I have Loropetalums in the back sunshine ligustrums in the middle, and I plant white Supertunia Vista Snowdrifts (white petunia’s)in the front. I love the combo of purple and that chartreuse greenish color on the Sunshine Ligustrum’s! And then beautiful stark, snowy white petunias growing like crazy because they are apart of the Vista line. The flowers are a show all themselves, but the three if these mixed together, I’m in love! I bet yours are beautiful too!🌻

I wish I could use this plant in my garden but I'm in northern Kentucky zone 6A. I see many plants for sale in big box garden centers near me selling plants for higher growing zones than mine. I never used to check thinking I could trust they were for my area. I even warn customers if they're looking at plants not for our area. :-)

Like they label Delphiniums as perennial, which they CAN be, but not here in N. Georgia. It's less a zone thing as a climate & soil thing. Wish they'd be honest!

Support a local nursery. The prices may be higher but I get my money's worth with Q&A. Lol. I don't know if big box stores are dishonest so much as ignorant. They may just buy based on what sells and not have the plant knowledge or gardening experience to know what will do well in your area.

Jim! I want to say thank you for all of your videos. I’ve been tagging along now for a while as I am teaching myself how to garden (lots of mistakes along the way ) but I’ve found your channel and it has been my go-to! Great content.

That Purple Daydream is a gorgeous plant, far improved from the older ones that quickly became trees.Incompetent landscape contractors used to sell the older varieties as foundation plants to go in front of windows. I think these contractors wanted to put in hardscape and paid someone off to get their licenses. I know that couldn't happen in Oklahoma but, I'm pretty sure it happened in Louisiana. In my Austin, Texas neighborhood, I saw a crew ripping out the tall lorapetalums from in front of picture windows yesterday.

Hello. Only seeing this video now, but wanted to take time to say I think this was a great review. I have been web searching on "purple shrubs," which is, I'm sure, why your 2-year-old video was served to me, but I'm so glad it was. This has moved to the top of my list of plants to add to my new landscape plan, thanks to your thorough and informative review.

Hey Jim. I moved into a home that had a hedge of those 25 foot beasts you spoke of. We had them removed 3 years ago. I replaced them with a 100 foot long zig zag planting of Hetzii columnar juniper, Sunshine Ligustrum and Purple Daydream loropetalum in a full hot afternoon sun location in zone 8b. They all look great except the ligustrum.

I've got false hollies in the front yard and planted mums with them. I'm disappointed that I didn't pair the false hollies with a loropetalum. I'm hoping the mums don't come back so I can replace it with a loropetalum. I will probably end up replacing anyways!

Is it okay to "tree form" these a little bit to clear it from the ground by several inches?

I planted one of these last year - PA zone 6b. It was doing pretty well through the winter with dried leaves banked up around it. Then last month we had some nasty icy winds, and it took a beating. It's doesn't quite look dead, and the leaves near the ground are okay, some hoping it will revive. Should I trim off the damaged stems or wait to see if they perk up? An Abelia near it also defoliated, but it's already growing new leaves. Fingers crossed because I really wanted a purple plant in that border.

I'm in 6a in KC. I have a microclimate on the south side of my house and am going to put one there. Glad to hear it did well in 6b. Hope it comes back for you.

@@carlaradke4066 Thank you. I trimmed off some of the dead-looking stems in spring, and it's been going great guns all season, adding several inches of height and width. I'll keep an eye out for winds this winter, but it's in an otherwise protected spot and has better roots by now so should be fine. In the meantime, I planted several more Z7 shrubs. I have some dahlias that have come back two years (so far). I cut them way back and then cover with leaves and used furnace filters. One tip I saw somewhere was, if the plant is marginally cold hardy, you should plant it in the spring, which gives it more time to get settled in before being subjected to freezing.

My plants are “pruned” every winter by rabbits. I have to buy smaller shrubs because of our limited income. If the rabbits keep pruning my new shrubs 1. Are the rabbits going to eventually kill them ? 2. Will they ever out grow the rabbit damage? Get to a point that I don’t have to worry about the rabbits continually pruning them. Everybody will hate me for saying this but if I could shoot a gun! We have generations of rabbits living here and I believe they can reproduce every 25 to 28 days and they do..🌷💚🙃

Just leave it be. It will fill back in and then you can prune it even. Bending will break it
