Purple Daydream® Dwarf Loropetalum Landscape Ideas - In this video I talk about Purple Daydream® Dwarf Loropetalum from the Southern Living Plant Collection. It is a dwarf Loropetalum that only reaches 3 feet in height. It is an evergreen with beautiful purple foliage. I also talk about some other plants that would look great planted with Purple Daydream®.

I've been following this guy's channel a few years now, and he's the absolute best on RU-vid. As a landscaper myself, when I have questions about pretty much anything plant-wise, I check here first and always find my answer. I've learned (through experience) not to necessarily trust the tags on plants too much. Thanks Jim for your attention to detail on all your videos. Most youtubers ramble on and meander, generalize, stop short of certain pertinent info, etc...but in all the videos I've seen by HortTube, each time there's a distinct series of well executed, well thought out arrangement of the various questions and suggestions that would benefit any gardener-- - - pro, or amateur. Details, details, details....all certainly matter, and all here are done in timely , efficient fashion and this guy lays them out one by one, each and every time. Perfecto.

Jim, love your channel! Talking about what plants go well together is such a HUGE help and I find everything you mention at my local nurseries or Lowe's. Thank you so much for all your videos and information. You're helping me landscape my yard and I'm learning how to care for what I plant :)

Sunshine ligustrum is such a versatile plant. It looks great all by itself, it looks great in a grouping and the combo of the purple and the sunshine is wow. Thanks for the video, I always appreciate advice on companion plants.

What about using those 3 that you had together plus the orange one? I like lots of color. How much maintenance do they require?

I'm no expert, but I have boxwood, cherry blast lorapetalum, sunshine ligustrum, and an unknown variety of mounding barberry. One of the things I like about these particular plants is they handle pruning whenever, at least in my case (I'm in zone 7-8 depending on who you talk to). I don't worry about the time of year, the heat, the cold... if there is random growth in a direction I don't want, I just snip it off whenever. Eventually, as my lorapetalum grow larger (I just planted them last spring for a hedge), I believe they will require a bit more maintenance than the other plants. The next plant for maintenance would be the boxwood, mine seem to double in size every season! But the growth is full from the base of the plant to the outside, and I literally snip off excess growth at random and they are full and lush. My mounding barberry has been in the ground 3 years and I've never once touched any of them. It's probably doubled in size, maybe slightly more, but it's not an issue where it's located. I can't speak for the orange rocket, only my own particular barberry. Also, I prefer a more "natural" shape to my plants. If you want to maintain the sunshine to a particular shape, that might need more maintenance, but I don't think it's extreme by any means.

I'm using a row of these as foundation planting for my slab foundation behind my rhododendron and roses, with a row of wedding gown hydrangea in front of all that! I realized I was lacking evergreen foundation shrubs and needed to soften the edges of my foundation and I think the purple will look so nice against my cream-colored ranch, with the frothy wedding gown hydrangeas out front and the lavender rhodies and magenta roses sandwiched between them!! (I'm totally landscaping a full 1/4 acre from scratch, zone 8b!)

That ligustrum is a winner., it gets insanely bright yellow in strong sun and grows nicely in horrible clay soil

My sunshine ligustrums are amazing with lorepetalum but have not done well for two years in zone 9b. They drop leaves and become leggy with slow growth. I have fertilized and added better soil. They get 6 hours morning to midday sun and are watered at least twice/week with irrigation. Soil drains moderately well.

Anything like the purple one that would be good in part to full shade zone 8? Looking for something to put behind and contrast with my lemon lime nandina and would be okay shaded by the house 95% of the day. I'm looking for any type of shrub with with a similar color. And definitely open to other suggestions as well ❤ I've been binge-watching your channel for all day and subscribed today. I should have subscribed a long time ago. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge for FREE and helping so many people like me!

Hey there. I’m in Delaware I believe it’s zone 7A. I planted one of these in august. And I’m noticing it’s losing its leaves. I thought it was a ever green. Is this normal to lose leaves?? What can I do to help it stay healthy through the winter?

Dumb question here, but im a neighbor of yours on Falls lake and Im having trouble deciding what kinds of flowering perennials will look good with this color combo. I have coppertone distyliums, sunshine ligustrums and cerise charm loropetalums with an accent crimson queen japanese maple that has a few sedges surrounding it. It all looks great but is missing the 'thriller' aspects. Any suggestions?

Yes for sure, but it would need protection in the winter unless you in zone 8 or 9.

Jim, how do you keep the baby gem boxwood two feet in height? I planted a border of baby gem and I’m having a hard time keeping them low. They grow fast and lately branches have been dying off.

Hi jim. I see a lot of leggy green loropetalum in 7b...is that probably due to too much shade?

I am definitely planting now. As long as the plant has been outside this is a great time to plant. Don't take something out of a coldframe or greenhouse and plant it though.

I usually answer the first few questions, but the questions from old videos bury new ones very quickly. I give about one hour a day to answering questions, then the rest of the time doing my paying job.
