I am growing and trying to fruit the Purple Mangosteen in my subtropical climate in Australia. They do not grow well here as conditions are too dry/cold over winter, but I will try my best to be fruiting soon. Normally they take around 8years to fruit. 3 down 5 years to go. Wish me luck :)
Tips on how to grow Purple Mangosteen
Tasting Purple Mangosteen
Growing Purple Mangosteen from seedling
Cost approximately 30$ per kg (varies on country and season)
Slow growing and very sensitive to cold dry conditions. Prefers hot humid climate all year round. Seedlings are also sensitive to elements, must grow with caution and lots of care.

Any updates on your mangosteen trees?

Geez looks different from your first video! Mangosteen looks great, haven't been bothered trying them but after watching this I might. I actually prefer achacha and can't wait for mine to fruit.

I like to push the limits :) I read online somewhere that someone was growing it successfully on the Gold Coast. Achacha's are so hardy our winters don't stress them at all. My only problem with them is they are too small, flesh to seed ratio is not great but yes flavour is amazing!

@@mytropicalfruitforestlife my two achachas are about 7-8 years old so hopefully will be fruiting soon. Yeah seeds are big, just gotta eat more!

I have seen a big mangosteen tree growing at Beerwah near glass house mountains, think about 15 years old but no fruit yet. No harm in trying.

Do you have any tips on pruning fully matured fruiting trees?

Hello Tim, So I have a 4 year old mangosteen, I planted in the ground. 3 1/2 years ago. It is growing so slow, its only about 3 inches high right now. I didn't know about this plant being sensitive to the weather, so it probably stunted the growth. may question now is, should I transplant it back to a pot and take better care of it this time, or is it too late? Thank you!
@mytropicalfruitforestlife
@mytropicalfruitforestlife 3 года назад
3inches or 3feet of growth in 3.5years? If 3 Inches that sounds really bad. You may be correct moving it indoors in a pot over colder months. They are from SE Asia in lots of sun, warm temperatures and lot's of water/humidity. Very tricky plants to grow. Remember they only fruit after minimum of 8years, so if your tree is not growing well it may not even get to fruiting stage. Good luck :)

@@mytropicalfruitforestlife yeah, I'm thinking of putting it back on a pot, what size pot should i replant it in? I live in south florida, there were some winters where it went as low as 40F but not for too long at a time, i should have greenhoused it, so you think its still worth taking care of this mangosteen? like will it still ever fruit? also another question, do you have the seashore mangosteen variety? i heard they are hardier.
@mytropicalfruitforestlife
@mytropicalfruitforestlife 3 года назад
@@johnjacobsson3141 it's up to you, but it will be a struggle. I put a greenhouse over mine over winter to keep the cold and light frost away. I don't have the seashore variety but I am getting it soon. Try the Achacha, Garcinia Humilis. They are a very hardy variety can handle your winters much better. The fruit is also a lot of peoples favourites.

@@mytropicalfruitforestlife Yes, I will be for sure to try those, is the achacha same to the lemon drop mangosteen (garcinia intermedia) in taste?
@mytropicalfruitforestlife
@mytropicalfruitforestlife 3 года назад
@@johnjacobsson3141 they are bigger, size of a golf ball and sweeter. Still has some tang, but very delicious. Most people prefer Achacha to lemondrop :)

When do mangosteen trees fully mature to fruit? How do you tell when the fruit is ready to eat/pick? Do they need another tree to cross pollinate or do we hand pollinate?
@mytropicalfruitforestlife
@mytropicalfruitforestlife 2 года назад
8years minimum before they start fruiting. Long time I know, but you can get grafted varieties if you live in a tropical climate (they are very rare so will cost you a pretty penny) They do not need more then 1 tree to fruit, however more trees you have the more chances of higher fruit yield. Good luck to you :)

@@stephaniearnold2775 Nice! Keep in mind they have a very long main tap roots, and do not like repotting much. So when you do repot, use a long deep pot. Good luck with it :D

The coldest it gets where I live is 8-10 celsius at night with a daily high of 21-24 celsius, (Cairo, Egypt) do you think mangosteens would make it here?
@AliAhmed-wh8um

That is only for January-December, the rest of the year is very warm.
@mytropicalfruitforestlife
@mytropicalfruitforestlife Год назад
@@AliAhmed-wh8um Maybe, they do love humidity though, so it may struggle if you have a dry climate. Also they do not like full sun when young, so you have to baby it for a while. I've lost 4 now so it is very difficult growing. Good luck :)

Put it in a deep pot as they have a long main tap root. And keep it wet and warm. Indoors over winter. May need a heat lamp depending on how cold your winters are. Good luck :D
