Push Tutorials: Using numbers and formulas to play chords on Push

PushTutorials.com: Wanted to share a cool way to learn or play chords using note numbers and chord formulas. This is helpful if you don't know the note letters or you want to quickly transform a chord to say add a 7th or 9th to it. Of course once you learn different shapes it's really easy to move them all around on Push even changing scales and keys. This makes it easy to come up with chord progressions and melodies even if you don't read music.

Finally a video that is straight to the point! This is the kinda of quality we need more of. Not this click bait, self-promo greed-bags. I'm a loyal fan forever!

I just bought a Push 2, and although I know music from a DJ perspective, I'm not trained in music theory, and can't play any instruments. While trying to understand just what the hell was going on with the Push grid, I found this video. The first thing I noticed was how much your voice reminds me of Nurse Hearse from a bunch of songs by The Detroit Grand Poobahs. Then I realised I'd seen your review videos for the APC 40 and the Push, amongst other things. That aside, yours is the clearest and most easily understandable explanation so far. I'm at the start of a massive learning curve, and it's people like you who help me keep trying. Thank you for your time and effort. Subscribed and watching.

What you mention at 3:30 only applies in chromatic mode where every note is spaced evenly. For example, if your Push is set to Major mode, the C Major shape (1-3-5) played 2 spots to the right ends up being an E minor, not an E Major. Good video, regardless.
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 8 лет назад
+lextexrex Yes, it will be a different chord in a different scale, but the point is, it's the same exact shape no matter what...well unless you get a scale with 5 or 6 notes per scale, but even then, you can still try the same shapes :)

Thanks for sharing, bro! Is there anything stopping one from learning the chords in chromatic? You mentioned that you're "in key". Doesn't that limit the number of chords we can actually make?
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 8 лет назад
Nope, you could go full chromatic mode, with all the notes and still put together chords just using the proper note numbers.

what about doing some advanced harmonic stuff like playing the secondary dominants and borrowed chords ?
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 7 лет назад
Not something I've looked into personally (still building up my knowledge of theory in general, I typically look up chords then try to figure them out on Push) but I'm sure you can.
@kwane5241
@kwane5241 7 лет назад
i guess we'll have to play them in the chromatic mode since we aim on not staying in a single key anyway :)

could you explain why, if you have 8 keys going accross, how come you only count 3 accross and then going up to the next line to count the next 3???
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 2 года назад
It's the way the notes are laid out, they are not sequential straight across.
@DoctorThunder
@DoctorThunder 8 лет назад
You can play any of the following chords based on a major key... M7 m7 susb9 M7(#11) 7 m7(b13) m7(b5)

@diegooliveras1952

A dominant chord? How do you resolve that?
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 8 лет назад
+Diego Oliveras You can also put Push in chromatic mode, which will show the black notes, not just what's "in key" then you can play flat/sharp notes :)
@dmitriyrazorenov
@dmitriyrazorenov 8 лет назад
+Diego Oliveras If you need dominant seventh you can either switch to mixolydian scale, and then the seventh note will be b7, or you can play a chord from the fifth note in the scale, and it will automatically be dominant.

Does the push come with these chords or these are played from a vst? If not how do i put them in to be played by pad and chords like this? I thought push was a controller. Ever since i watched the "Ableton Push Jazz Piano Solo" video i been wondering this
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 8 лет назад
I'm not sure what you mean by does it come with the chords? I'm playing the chords manually by playing different notes at the same time. If you're asking about the actual instrument sounds then you can use any sounds you have loaded in Ableton, including vst plugins and libraries, Ableton also comes with a bunch of sounds itself depending on which version you get.

The spacing between the 1,4 and 5 on a guitar is different. Not a criticism. In order to mimic guitar, the notes need to spaced out across octaves.
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 7 лет назад
Cool, not really about mimicking a guitar completely for me (even though that's how they laid it out) but being able to hack out some melodies using guitar tabs/numbers is cool.
@theclinkmusic
@theclinkmusic 6 лет назад
The problem i have with this and please correct me if I'm wrong. All the chords your playing are just variations of the CHORD C, so your playing inversions of C and C suspended and so on. Being in the key of C means i should be able to play the chords C, Dminor,Eminor and so on but it doesn't look like the push is able to do that. Also when recording a C triad from the push into ableton does it record each note or would it just be recorded as one note
@SoundsAndGear
@SoundsAndGear 6 лет назад
You can take it out of "in key" mode, which opens up all of the other notes not in key, they will not be lit up like all the pads are when in key, you can also change keys and scales, no matter what you change to, you can still use the same exact shapes in various keys and scales, rather you confine it to the specific key or if you open it up to include notes not in the same scale/key.
@mrburns366
@mrburns366 6 лет назад
theclinkmusic that's not true. They arent variations of the C chord once you move the pattern off of the root note. In "in key" mode you have access to every chord in that key. Think of it this way, in C major and in "in key" mode it's like having only the white keys on piano. You can play every chord in C major with those notes ;)
