Pushing Daisies tells the story of Ned, the Pie Maker. Ned has the unique ability to bring dead things back to life with a single touch, but this magical gift comes with a caveat or two. Keep a dead thing alive for more than a minute, and something else has to die in its place, and touch a resurrected thing a second time, it will die again forever. With the aid of private investigator Emerson Cod, Ned touches murder victims, asks them who killed them, then collects the reward for solving the case. However, Ned's life is turned upside down when he resurrects his childhood sweetheart, murdered tourist Charlotte Charles (AKA Chuck). The two struggle to maintain their romance despite not being able to touch, all while attempting to hide the truth behind Chuck's resurrection from her agoraphobic aunts Lily and Vivian, smell researcher Oscar Vibenius, and grave robber Dwight Dixon.
Created by Bryan Fuller. Starring Lee Pace as Ned the Pie Maker, Anna Friel as Charlotte "Chuck" Charles, Chi McBride as Emerson Cod, Jim Dale as the Narrator, Ellen Greene as Vivian Charles, Swoosie Kurtz as Lily Charles, Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook, Sy Richardson as the Coroner, Stephen Root as Dwight Dixon, Diana Scarwid as Mother Superior, David Arquette as Randy Mann, Christine Adams as Simone Hundin, Paul Reubens as Oscar Vibenius, Raúl Esparza as Alfredo Aldarisio and Brad Grunberg as Lawrence Schatz. Notable guest stars include Patrick Fabian as Mark Chase, Molly Shannon as Dilly Balsam, Riki Lindhome as Jeanine, Missi Pyle as Betty Bee, Fred Willard as The Great Herrmann, Graham McTavish as Hansel Von Getz, French Stweart as Woolsey Nicholls, Paul F Thompkins as Gunther Pinker, Joel McHale as Harold Hundin, Hamish Linklater as John Joseph Jacobs, Gina Torres as Lila Robinson and David Koechner as Merle McQuoddy.

There were a lot of shows mucked up by the 2007 writers strike, and Pushing Daisies was one. They got approval for a full 22 episode season and then a writers strike happened in Oct. Fuller had to write an episode to sum up the season of just 9 episodes. ABC had to shove something else in the missing 13 slots, and stretch the series broadcast out with one or two a month. Same thing happened to Better off Ted. Both ended with a failed 2nd season because they had failed to lock in mainstream viewers in S1. Both became a niche viewing experience. This situation helped kill Moonlighting in the late 80s and caused the 3rd Night Stalker movie to go to NBC in 1972/3. ABC Circle Films has a bad track record with innovative shows the untimely appeared in the midst of a writer or actor strike.

Pushing Daisies is the comforting duvet I wrap myself in when life calls for it. A show that itself, became the slice of pie in the sky you can always revisit, long after its doors have shuttered. This was a wonderful retrospective even if I hard disagree that Birdhouse in Your Soul is bad. It's a masterpiece.

While it’s a shame it was cancelled, the ending is kind of perfect. The show, much like its murder victims, is abruptly taken from us before its time, but in the last minute of its existence the narrator is given a minute to describe everything that happened to the characters before going back to being dead again. It’s not a very satisfying ending, but it sums up the show very well.

Well, this has been my #1 favorite tv show since 2008 and I do NOT agree, and I do not forgive Bryan fuller for making a promise to follow up the story with a series of graphic novels and never following through. I was with him through “Wonderfslls” and “dead like me” and of course, pushing daisies, but he lied to me, so Hannibal and Star Trek can just suck it.

I read somewhere if the if they were able to run and end the series properly, it would be Ned old and grey in bed about to die, and Chuck is there with him still looking like the day she died never aging. And right before Ned passes away they kiss for the last time.

Pushing Daisies looked like it was taken straight up from a scrapped Tim Burton 90s screenplay, it had everything - Morbid imaginery - Over the top acting - 50s aesthetic in a modern day scenario - Oversaturated pastel colors with zero contrast - Characters with social awkardness - Cheesy green screen shenenigans that makes a lot of shots hilariously surreal, both intentionally and unintentionally - Excellent cinematography - A dead dog It surprised me knowing he wasn't involved in this at all. (Of course this was the hand of Barry Sonnefield which followed a very similar aestethic in his movies, and the set designer which explicity declared that the visual were intentionally inspired by Burton's work)

Dead Like Me (also by Bryan Fuller) got a movie after the show was cancelled, but I cannot say it was a perfect ending. It looks like Pushing Daisies got a better finale, although the Piemaker's dad abandoned storyline would've driven me nuts.

The show ends on a strange note though, that being an unresolvable issue of Ned and Chuck not being able to touch one another which kind of spoils the romance. I was hoping that the video would touch on that, but never the less there is nothing else on this show out there on RU-vid so god bless this channel.

I loved this show because for some reason it reminded me of the old cartoon collection of skits "Fractured Fairytales" which I think was part of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show back in the 60s. Pushing Daises was like listening to a weird bedtime story, and the narrator was one of my favorite aspects of it. The whole premise was a part of some bizarre fever dream and I loved getting immersed. And that rising cliffhanger crescendo gets me every time 😆

Adore Pushing Daisies! re-Watch it every year (Like Christopher Lee re-reading Lord of the Rings every year). You're right in so far as at the end you go in to withdrawals & want to rewatch it (which is where The Grand Budapest Hotel comes in handy). Agree with you about the musical numbers, with the exception of "Bird House in your Soul", these two vocal power houses of whimsy getting to do a duet about a digeon with a bedazzled wing still gives me an enormous grin. Sometimes it's fun to see guest artists when you rewatch the show and suddenly realise how successful these guest artists have actually turned out to be since Pushing Daisies (and of course those who fit in to the ensemble so effortlessly because they were already darlings of quirky art-house cinema). A must watch for people who like their art surreal, but warm & entertaining.

Wish the show continued with a season, three of pushing daisies and a season four the show was amazing. It felt like a fairytale. It also felt like a comedy had action. It was a little bit scary. The show ended too soon with some questions still not been answered that’s why the show should’ve continued one day it might be picked up and followed by a movie to answer some unanswered questions.

I also loved Hannibal but are you aware of "Wonderfalls"? I bring it up as it stars Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal's Alana Bloom) but two shows sharing actors is not a good enough to post. I bring it up as Episode 6 is called "Muffin Buffalo". In that episode there is a bake off off where we meet Marianne Marie Beattle played by Beth Grant. This character is also in the Season 2 Pushing Daisies episode "Comfort Food" that takes place at a different bake off. So both "Wonderfalls" and "Pushing Daisies" take place in the same universe. That is not all though, well for PD it is, but In the 2nd episode of Hannibal, Amuse-Bouche (about 26 minutes in) , you see a person named getting a prescription filled. That character is Gretchen Speck. The pharmacist whom the FBI goes after, Stammets, is the pharmacist that mentions a last name of "Horowitz" and she says "Divorced, lost he hyphen but kept the ring" It looks like she is a potential victim but she is not. That character and the reason for the divorce is told in the pilot episode of "Wonderfalls" This means that all three shows, "Wonderfalls", "Pushing Daisies", and "Hannibal" all take place in the same universe. They all take place in the "Fullerverse" :)

I first watched this show when it aired, but I never watched the ending (I am not quite sure why since I loved it right from the start). Last year I decided to re-watch it since it is available on HBO Max and knowing it was only 2 seasons long I decided to watch 1 episode weekly, except towards the end. I just finished it today and needed to find some content related to it and this video has made me quite happy. I missed a lot of the adult and dark humor the first time so I feel like I enjoyed the show properly this time around. It's a shame it got cancelled because it's a truly unique show and they set up a lot of great stuff that we didn't get proper resolution for. I do like the ending, those last three episodes provided satisfying closures and I particularly love the last words of the narrator telling us that those events are merely a new beginning. Great video, truly appreciate it!!! PS: I had a MASSIVE crush on chuck, and know I do again.

This is my all-time favourite television series. I watch it again from time to time, basking in the warm glow given off by its sunshiny characters and stories. Every actor was a revelation and even the worst episodes were still really good. Pushing Daisies was so beyond anything else that was on TV at the time, that it came as no surprise to me it was cancelled, it was so niche. Now we have so much amazing stuff coming out on streaming services (Flanagan's work on Netflix but especially his most recent, Midnight Mass, for one), but nothing quite compares to the blatant quirkiness of Pushing Daisies. To be honest, given how the cast member's and creator's careers have progressed over the past decade, I doubt we'll ever see a real continuation of any kind. And the show had a relatively satisfying finale. If it were up to me, and I had to choose between more of this, my favourite show, and Hannibal, I would choose Hannibal; its cancellation was downright criminal!

I thought the show would inevitably have to tackle the Digby angle. Digby is Ned's childhood dog. After he gets brought back to life, he's still with Ned in his 30's. Digby is not an old dog, and he hasn't died of natural causes. Some day, a character would have to ask, "Is Digby stuck as the dog he was when he died?" And if that's the case, Chuck is stuck too. Not only do she and Ned never touch, but Ned will age without her. She can't move on with anyone else either, unless they are also "alive again." But that would be up to Ned.

This was the first show my ex and I watched through together. This retrospective hurt my heart, there couldn't be a better allegory for our relationship. I love you lemur, you're my whole world and everything in it.

Kristen chenoweth.... nobody has any business being so alluring. *shivers* i always resented him for not treating her like the goddess she is.

I would like to say nice video but I understood like a quarter of what you said cause you reference other videos and shows that I never watched but thanks for talking about this show

I remember watching this back then, and I didn't really question it, but Chuck is a zombie right? Along with everyone else Ned resurrected? I mean, obviously not the flesh eating kind, but they don't age nor seem to suffer any ailment. Especially not from those whose deaths involved more deterioration of flesh. Speaking of which, Chuck's dad. That being said, they seem to want/need sleep? And Chuck does eat, but did she need to? Presumably, blood is flowing... but the guy with the super smell said that Chuck stunk of decay. I loved this show, it was so charming and whimsical. Especially the redundant naming conventions i.e. Boutique Travel Travel Boutique, Über Life Life Insurance, Coeur d'Coeurs. And of course, the color pallet was so vibrant. I did not appreciate the rushed ending, which was sadly caused by the cancellation. Some unsatisfyingly resolved plot points, like the whole deal with Ned and Chuck's dads and their shifty friend. And Chuck's dad in general, as a wandering anatomically correct zombie.

When watching Barry I thought Stephen Root looked familiar but I Had no idea where I had seen him before. Pushing Daisies was so long ago that I completely forgot all about his character in it.

I absolutely loved Dead Like Me, and i was all over this series as soon as it came out. I was so disappointed that Fuller wasn't able to do The Munsters (Mocking Bird Lane) reeboot... but... we did get Hannibal instead.
