I did many things for the first time in this video. First I'll say that this was my first let down with shooting in harsh lighting conditions. Secondly, I pushed Portra 800 by two stops and got results that I'm super happy with. Third, I broke the frame of a very expensive frame. lol I hope you all enjoy this one..

Finally a film photographer on RU-vid that is not confused by the words "pushing" and "pulling film" ! So many film photographers on here are using these terms the wrong way. Mike I always approach every shoot with the same mindset. A checklist of what I will take, cameras, film or cards, lenses, filters , batteries, reflectors, tripods or monopods, hand held meters both light and color temp, lens brush and cleaning supplies, charged cell phone, water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellant ( for the model ) gaffer tape. I always try to scout locations before hand so I know what the light will be like and what interesting backgrounds to use. If shooting a model I pre-visualize what shots and concept that we will start with. And always be prepared to go with the flow.

very very spontaneous when it comes to shoots. that's usually how I get the best work to be honest, but I am working on planning shoots out! I think it'll help me in the long run lol

For shoots, I like to take the approach of film directors I admire. They plan and prepare and shoot what’s on the page first, then they allow for improv and spontaneity. And If I’m properly prepared and something goes wrong, I’m better suited to adapt to make it work. Like paddling down a river in a canoe. You’ve got control of your boat and the oar, but you’re going with the flow and where the water takes you.

🔥 I just watched like 5 of your videos back to back man. Loving the channel. Hi Mike. Came across your channel by accident really when researching the Pentax 67 which I've now acquired for my street photography which is all candid but nonetheless planned in terms of location and light though getting successful images might be more challenging with the Pentax! Thank you for taking the time in doing this video, I think you're right doing a plan for your shoots only because you only get one shot with film. No need for surprises considering the cost of time, models, and extra's. If you have the chance shoot a large format for half a day.

Incredible work again Mike! I just bought a Godox SL150W continuous and will be shooting Portra 800 indoors. Think I'm gonna try rating at 800 and pushing 2 stops. Those 800 photos are so punchy!

I really like your style Mike. Nice shooting and congrats to your models, they are always very professional. To answer your question, I'm just an amateur photographer, shooting on Fuji x100T, mainly jpeg SOOC with film emulation settings (trying to get that analog photography feeling, where you can't really edit your shots afterwards). Portraits and street photography are what appeal the most to me.
