Thank you for those additional techniques for tightening the cord up. You saved me from trying a 10th time to do mine! Much appreciated. Cheers!

This video undoubtedly has saved viewers that repair their pull starters, many hours of contemplation and bother. Good job and I appreciate the effort with this very clearly presented instruction.

The best, or better than most "how to" videos get. And I'm an old, retired engineer. Great job, Bloke. lol I don't know, can Canadians be called "Blokes?" I spent over two years in England, many years ago and my best English friends were "Blokes."

My friend has the same old lawn mower; she had to buy a new spring because the old one was quite battered. The new spring is "stronger" than the old one so it was quite difficult to place it inside (despite following instructions in this video). Thank you for your demonstration, especially for the tip on how to get the cord all the way in; it worked beautifully.

Thanks heaps!! This method was so simple. Glad it's never removed from RU-vid.

Thanks for the video. it was a big help when I went to replace the cord on my 1986 Snapper with a 3.5 hp Briggs. Just one note on the tabs. I've been told there are typically four tabs. Only two should be in use. The other two are spares because the first ones eventually break off from repeatedly bending them up and down. Thanks again, Rob

After watching many videos on this, I think yours was the one that got it done for me... On the one I was working on, there is a small spring and adapter that goes between the "bottom" and the white plastic pulley. It is shown in the Briggs and Stratton parts book, but in all the videos that I watched, no one ever had those 2 parts. It is meant to keep an upward pressure on the white plastic pulley that is held in place with 2 of the 4 metal tabs. I left mine out for now and will see how it goes without them. I suspect that I will be fine. I do have another piece of equipment with the same starter, so I will probably check that and see... I think that a person who is "respringing" there starter, they should look into the one way clutch assembly for free movement. I see lots of rust on the shaft from the crank to the clutch. It's easy enough to get in there and clean the rust off and reoil the felt pad...

Thanks for the video, it helped a lot but I found it easier to attach spring then coil it tight and then lift it a little and feed in the new cord and tie it off to the plastic spool. Works great though thanks again.

It's probably a slot or flat head screwdriver that you're using. A Phillips is one of the +-shaped ones: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Phillips. Thanks for the video just the same!

Re. those tabs that hold the pulley wheel loosely in place. If all intact, there should be 4 tabs. Only ever use 2, bent down opposite each other. Leave the other two unbent for spares as these tabs WILL eventually break off, depending on how often the pull cord or spring needs attention over the years. Good idea to try to look to check there are two holding the pulley in place, and if not, hold the pulley in place with fingers through the case gaps when lifting the case off the engine… otherwise… big twang as that spring flies unwound. I learnt the hard way. Story of my life… 😂😂
