I was a grunt in the Marvel Bullpen beteen 1990 and the end of 1998, and when the Dan Pussey stuff came out, we loved it. Its look at the daily life in a comics production studio was 100% accurate.

You guys were my gateway to Dan Clowes. Picked up Like A Velvet Glove, loved it, picked up Ghost World, loved it even a little bit more. This book is next! Just a complete master of his craft. Also, this book seems hilarious.

The "De LaRosa" brothers re-tiling Mr. Anger's bathroom has its roots in a real life controversy in the eighties Comics Journal where it was rumored that the Hernandez Bros. re-tiled Gary Groth's bathroom.

Love it! The new chapters I’d love Clowes to add are people who get into comics to get a movie deal and speculators.

I ran the music and movie department at a Barnes and Noble for eons, had many friends, enemies, and indifferents among the vast cast of characters who would come in and hang out. Funny to think that Ed Piskor is one of those guys at one of those stores out there.

Dan Clowes' quote that if it weren't for birth control he woulda been doing mainstream superhero stuff with his peers always stuck with me. For me, Pussey! is him following that thought to its conclusion.

As a kid, I thought Dan Pussey was meant to be John Byrne.

Byrne's legend probably informed some of Pussey. He was a high-profile "mainstream" cartoonist with a distinct personality at the time. - Jim

FYI - The "Pooh-Say" joke is likely inspired by WC Fields' _The Bank Dick_ where Fields' character is Egbert Sousé ("accent grav over the E") which also features a bar called The Black Pussy Café (where Shemp is the bartender). Check it out - a comedy masterpiece.

Clowes' work was probably the first major indie comic I latched onto. It opened my eyes to a whole new way to explore comics as a story telling medium. :)

Another excellent show! One of the best things about your show is that you cover the technical aspects of making comics, and you present comics from different generations. Speaking of that how about a look at S. Clay Wilson. He kept his technique a secret. Would love to see you guys examine his art. Thank you for your show, getting through the pandemic has been made easier because of all your hard work. Oh, and thank you for the cool t-shirt. Think I'll have to buy another!

I've seen original comic artwork from the 40s/50s/60s (by Belgian artists) with blue watercolor used to mark certain areas. Always wondererd why the artists (Morris for example, the creator of Lucky Luke) did that... maybe just to give the pages a more "finished" feel, maybe as an indicator for the colorist. Whatever the reason may be, I like the look. I use it sometimes for sketchbook stuff, when I don't feel like using greys.
@jyrkivainio425
@jyrkivainio425 3 года назад
It usually indicates that the drawing was first published with a gray tone (like zipatone) added in those places, or in that period, maybe it was published with black line drawing + one added color. The artist would indicate the placement with the blue watercolor and then the color separator or someone at the printer's would typically cut out the tone on an acetate overlay. Light blue watercolor was used because it wouldn't show in the printer's camera, so the line art could be shot without the color affecting it.

I paused this at 20 minutes, ordered the book, read it, laughed out loud the whole time and now I can watch the rest. My favourite joke in the whole thing is when Dan finally goes to the drawing table with the intention of making something personal and non-super hero related and just can't do it. Fuck, I love Cartoonist Kayfabe, even if it does sometimes indulge my inner Dan Pussey.

The guy who takes the payola and says “God, I love superheroes!” looks an awful lot like Don Thompson (RIP) the co-publisher of the old Comics Buyer’s Guide ad rag. Of course, any resemblance is purely coincidental, I’m sure.
