Ireland had a great team then and it was all down to jack Charlton. he gave our nation more than any other idividual has done in the past 50 years. he gave us hope, belief and a world stage. a hero of the people.

So sad he's gone. But also so proud to have been a young boy growing up in that era to have experienced it. I hope they create some monument here in Ireland to celebrate the life of Big Jack. Rest in Peace my friend.

Was reading a bunch of articles on the Indo about our recent qualification for France 2016 and I suddenly got all nostalgic for that song from so log ago. I know it mentions Big Jack and Italy, but to me it will always be the theme tune to an Irish soccer team qualifying for a major tournament. Great days they were indeed. Here's hoping there's more to come as I've explained and talked about at length to my kids just how magical Euro 88 and Italy 90 were, but they haven't experienced it yet. Here's hoping they will next year. COME ON IRELAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That song was legendary, the intro cords on electric guitar, the soundbites from Jack Charlton set the tone as unapologetically here to compete and push as hard as we can to win (rather than the usual "just glad to be here") sets the tone for the chorus from everyone to show that everyone is behind it. No tournament before or since Italia 90 was there a genuine hard edge (thanks Jack) of we are here to compete. Can almost imagine the likes of Kevin Moran or Mick McCarthy putting in a crushing takle to "introduce" themselves during the opening cords / Jack soundbites!
Yep indeed. I was 15 at the time. I recall when it was broadcast on Sports Stadium, the TV show at the time, and after it the Presenter (Bill O'Herlihy I think) said it was produced by "Larry Mullen Jr of the Edge"..... I bet he must have gotten quite a slagging after that :-D
Yep, same here - 16 years old. The elation of Romania, and afterwards the utter despair of that google eyed fucker Schillachi. Bonus though, I was so down after the loss to Italy, my girlfriend let me get the leg over as a consolation prize, so... win in the end!

This was kind of a Bod Geldof's Band Aid, take 2, this song, RTE and the media brainwashed us back in 1990 into thinking that Ireland could actually beat all the World football powers and win the World Cup, young and innocent then but forever blessed having witnessed something very special.
Every time i hear or see this song/video the volume has to be turned up !!!.. all the way up to 11 :) !! ... Bring on the Euro's ,.. do us proud boys !!
Growing up during this time, it was basically 'normal' that Ireland competed with the best in the world. It wasn't even the most popular sport in Ireland and we're there beating big nations where it was..... afterwards when Ireland return to being a 'small' team with a poor squad you realize just how special that time was.
@MrWoppers He's a livin legend alright.... we were dam lucky to have him !!! Played without been able to train with his knee problems and played against Italy 94 with a dead arm .. and still out performed the best. !!!
