After some digging online it appears that the cracking of the block is a fairly normal casting finish. Although personally I don’t recall seeing this on any of my 4Runners I’ve owned before. 🤷♂️ Have any of you had this on your 4Runners?
You should consider sending that into your fellow RU-vidr Scotty Kilmer for his opinion on those engine cracks. I'm very surprised you have that issue since your vehicle was made in Japan, not Mexico. Even if it is somehow "cosmetic," you shouldn't have that on a brand new vehicle, just like those "bumps" in the fenders should not be present on the new Mexican-made Toyota trucks you showed in your recent video.
Yup that’s for sure. A lot of Toyota fanboys (and girls) on RU-vid buy new yotas just for the content and likes and are careful not to criticize yotas since getting corporate invites and access is their livelihoods. If they criticize them they might stop getting invited, so you don’t get the full picture. That’s why I like Untamed. Tells it like it is.
I honestly don’t understand why some Americans are so against the hybrid motor. The new motor in the LC offers plenty of power, instant Tq and is far more efficient than the outgoing v8.
Awesome color and awesome purchase !!! I just recently bought a 2018 4runner limited with 66,000 miles in white. I freaking love it. I'm gonna keep this baby for a long time ❤️💪🏻🔥
The cracking is called heat checking. As an aluminum die cast die heats and cools over time the steel die can start to crack. This is cosmetic only on the outside of a cover. Since this is the last of this engine, I am assuming toyota is not building any new casting cavities. - Former Die cast engineer
It’s refreshing to see someone who actually knows what they’re talking about posting a comment on a RU-vid video. This is usually a place where ignorance comes to spread misinformation. Thank you sir for renewing my faith in comment sections.
Even though this is not an “exclusive” TRD color, this is the only model year you can get underground in a 5th gen TRD so it is a special vehicle. Nice purchase!
I test drove the new Land Cruiser with my kids and they thought the suspension was terrible and I agree. I was beyond excited about this new platform and found myself rather disappointed. I even talked to the lady who works at the Toyota dealership after the test drive about the jittery suspension feedback, she agreed that it was not a gentle ride by any means.
I checked both my 2021 and 2022 Trd pros and they have similar slight marking like yours shows. Just way fainter. I think it’s just the mold scratchings and no issue. I have 71k and 21k miles on mine with zero issues. Love the new color.
I just bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD PRO in the Ice Cap white. I love the contrast between the black trim and the white body of the vehicle. From my experience the light exterior colors are easier to keep clean. However, there is no arguing that Underground is a phenomenal color and a great color choice on this 4Runner. I opened the hood and checked the engine block. I have the same spider web cracks on the block. Please make a video of what your findings are and how Toyota explained the problem.
Across the board it seems. Seems to be trickling down even into Japan now. Toyota seems to have lost its way. Maybe their new CEO is behind all these recent poor decisions.
Toyota tech here, Congrats my brother, Best of the Best right there, I have 3 Trd Pro 4Runners, I’ll never sell one, Got A 24 towed it to storage and hide it from my self and the world, Just started making RU-vid videos also, Just did a off road now doing a another 4Runner engine complete tear down with only 20k miles check it out, don’t let that scare you click that white tool box, trans engine everything out cleaning every pieces by hand Going to showcase All Toyota engines and show the world what I can do, Respect what you do take care
@@Ed-gq8hk thanks I’ll be uploading the 4Runner engine I’m cleaning right now tonight, watch that one later, making a full Timelapse once I finish it tomorrow, thanks a lot
@@UntamedMotors just for you I’m going to upload a 4Runner video rite now wait 10 min and I’ll show you the cracks from casting on the inside of the timing cover, don’t worry about that brother, it’s on the inside also, congrats again, it will be a video of the 4Runner engine torn apart in a ways you probably never seen, take a min to watch it, I enjoy watching what you do,
I just bought a beautiful new 2024 4Runner Limited last week. It was $58k out the door. All the dealers in my surrounding area (three dealers) have zero on the lot, and in-transits have pending sale, and the rest they show on dealer website are in build phase. So, I got the only 4Runner on the lot and it arrived that day. It was the exact spec (color/trim) that I wanted, so I pounced on it. The MSRP was $55,050 and I got it down to $53,800. I was shopping for about a year... just waiting for the right moment. I was a little surprised when my friend told me I made an impulse buy :)
@@BoiseTDI Cleveland, TN. The surrounding dealers I refer to were Knoxville and Chattagnooga. Also, the day of the purchase I did take a loan was a point of contention for me. First, I am paying off the loan in a week, as planned. But my credit score is 846 fico... and they said they would give me 5% to 6% on the loan. The finance guy came back with 6.36%. I said the other guy told me between 5% and 6% and he says "well , this is the best they can do... 6.36%." I did not argue because I am paying off cash right away. But later on I looked at the website and the Toyota 4Runner Incentives had 4.99% on 60 months for qualified buyers. Well, I put down $11,500 and a credit score of 846... I am definitely a qualified buyer. So these finance guys LIE THROUGH THEIR TEETH. Don't ever feel bad about beating them up on price cuz they are screwing you and everybody else as much as they can.
I was in the same position and did something similar to what you did. It’s a good move. It’s almost an investment . Bought something that they’re not making anymore. From a trusted company that values longevity.
My 2024 has those cracks.. I went back to the dealer and opened the hood on all the new ones they got on the lot and all of them have it.. when I asked, they said it’s normal 🤣🤣
@@UntamedMotors But you didn't actually look for it, never have I thought to look at that and this time it was by mere accident and now we're all engine checking. 🤣
Did you try driving a off-road premium with KDSS? The body roll is significantly reduced, helpful on sharp turns, on highway speeds on curves and beneficial when off-roading with better articulation. In fact the body roll is similar to my Lexus ES 350 sedan. It took me a long time to find one with the color and options I wanted. Had to fly over a thousand miles to pick it up.The Pro is great vehicle , but NITTO tires are not good in wet weather, plus I needed a full length roof rack and putting bilstein 6112 suspension upgrade with a small lift. My 2024 off road premium with KDSS, rock rails, cameras, heated steering wheel and seats, Wildpeak All-terrain E rated 10 ply tires is better for my needs and how it was delivered. Also later added a full length roof rack UpTOP overland. All for under $52,000. I am very happy! Can’t go wrong with any 4Runner model. Just pick the model that will best meet your needs. Car care nut has a good RU-vid video on the different models.
UT, I bought one as well 2024 Ice Cap White TRD PRO 4Runner for our family… made the purchase in December 2023… we are downsizing our home in a few years and this was on our list for long term reliability… UT, do not make the mistake by getting rid of this iconic powertrain vehicle! Keep this one… trust me!! congratulations on the new home!!! SoCal likes your pick my brother!!! 👍
We did the same thing. Traded a 2008 SR% 4Runner for a 24 TRD Off Road. Didn't have to, but wanted the NA Engine. Congratulations on yours! I just checked my engine casing and it looks the same. Surely it's not shattered!
Beautiful 4 runner! Great choice and good to see you didn't go with the rat's nest under the hood of the LC. Really like the color and the interior. You bought one of the very few vehicles that will appreciate, not depreciate. A big bonus when you can get a daily driver that will appreciate or not lose value.
I have a gen 5 and it looks the same. It is just casting marks for the block....not an issue. Your horror upon first seeing it is priceless, though. Enjoy your gen 5. I love my 2024 ORP with KDSS.
@Untamed Motors: Congrats! I am leaving a deposit on a TRD Off-Road Premium tomorrow, I was able to get it for $1,869 under MSRP. It is our first Toyota. I am 51 and hope it will last until I retire. It arrives in mid-September. We can’t wait! Keep us updated please! Love the vids.
You have chose wisely my friend! I struggled choosing between underground and solar octane; I went with a 2024 solar octane off road. I like underground but every spot shows and there are just too many silver, gray, black and white cars🤪.
Congrats on your purchase. Honestly though, this reliability factor and longevity factor only matter if you keep it for many years and tens of thousands of miles. Very few people keep a vehicle past 80k miles because they are so concerned about resale value plummeting after 100k miles.
I bought a 24 Pro, and I'm building it the f**k out for overlanding (doing it right the first time), and honestly, I think I rightly justified doing so because of the value this thing will hold over the years. If there's a rig to build out, it's this one.
I have a 4R 2020 TRD Pro and have put almost 137K miles on it and love it. I checked the block. I found 1 line about a half inch long and 1 line about a quarter inch. No other lines...the rest of the block is smooth. The two small lines feel like "raised" thin lines...almost like lines that might be formed from the casting process. They are raised lines and definitely not cracks. This is probably what your seeing...but, do the lines feel raised (as opposed to cracked)? My guess is that these were formed during the casting process but would still like to know what Toyota thinks. I think you're very lucky to get the last year of the 5th Gen. I plan on keeping mine as my last new vehicle purchase. Best of luck and a big congratulations!!!
Enjoy your straight forward no BS truth. I am Toyota guys had 2 4Runner last one 22 TRD OF which I trade in for Lexus GX 460 ( oversea Prado), for smoother ride, and v8 smoothness since it a daily vehicle. Still feel the 4Runner better for off roading and over all reliability. Can I ask how do you afford all these new vehicles? Any tricks because would love to have that ability. Thanks
Thanks man! I have a few sources of income. Primary job only brings in about a third of our annual net. RU-vid about covers the vehicles now days. Im in the National Guard too part time. Earning my MbA and PhD (without student loans) helped me get into a nice paying career. All of this didn’t happen by accident is what I’m saying.
@@UntamedMotors wow that's awesome MBA/PhD, what a great example of hard working person, family man and service in the military. Very proud of ppl like you and setting a great example for our younger generation.
Agreed. Although i understand it’ll be hard to believe from me… but i bought this 4Runner to keep for the long haul. I know it’ll be a diamond in the ruff in coming years. =]
Congrats on the new Underground 4Runner! I just picked up my Underground 4Runner two Saturdays ago. Some things to look out for: This paint from my observations seems to be very thin. I also had a lot of orange peel and will have to wet sand and buff over the next couple of weeks. Also it loves to retain fingerprints, like when opening and closing doors. Finger prints everywhere! But other than that, it's an amazing color and I absolutely love it. Just wish Toyota didn't cheap out on the paint...
To add to the MANY replies about the so called “cracks” on the engine casting - THESE ARE NOT CRACKS - this is just a rough finish on the lower end casting! I’ve had three fifth generation 4Runners - two ‘23’s and now a 2024 TRD Pro in Terra that I absolutely love for the same reasons that this video was made. I bought this to keep from now on. I bought my first Toyota in 1983 and know what they are about. I’m retired now and drive for Toyota for fun. I think you made the absolute correct decision on buying the Undergound TRD Pro instead of the overly complex Land Cruiser. As nice as they are- and they really are nice - they aren’t the last of the Fifth Generation TRD Pro’s that are oh so proven to be reliable. AND will be something to hang onto for as long as you want. My Terra TRD Pro will be fun to own and drive for years - not as a daily, but as my “classic”. You made the correct choice IMHO. You will always be able to buy a hybridised platform for the foreseeable future, but this is “last call” for the 5th Gen platform that so closely resembles the FJ Cruiser in its simplicity, reliability & value - and oh yes, no more “manual transfer case” for the 4WD going forward in the 6th generation 4Runner.
Great choice! My only complaint with the TRD Pro is the exhaust drone… I personally prefer the limited edition with full time 4wd. Rides almost as nice as the GX460….
It’s hard to tell without a close up but it is probably a casting tooling issue. Since TM is at the end of the production run they may have decided not to put as much capital towards replacing worn out tooling. Although you would hope they would finish off the casting with a some sort of media polishing to knock down the high spots. It’s not a casting flaw per se but it looks like a Harbor Freight generator tier casting.
Glad I saw this video and did some research on the appearance of cracks before I found it myself! I have a 24 Trd Pro and my wife has a 24 Limited and both have this. I would have freaked out had I seen it before learning about it! Lol!
@@UntamedMotors LOL! I could hear the concern in your voice when you saw it in real time. Understandably so! Thanks for keeping us entertained and informed with your videos!
Have a 2021 lunar rock TRD pro and just picked up a black 2024 TRD pro absolutely great vehicle no complaints. I highly recommend buying maintenance parts and stock up.
I have 2 5th gen. A 2010 SR5. That one the block doesn’t have that “cracking”. The 2024 TRD looks just like yours. It just looks like something to do with how it’s casted. They aren’t actual cracks. It’s just on the surface. We bought the 2024 for the same reason you did.
I own a 5th gen 4runner and also the new turbo4 in a lexus. After spending a good amount of time with the turbo i really like it. Way better mpg abd the power is impressive comparing it to the v6. Time will tell how reliable it will be
I just sold my 21 TRD Premium (Barcelona Red) for the new 24 TRD Premium ( underground) . Intended to own the 21 for 20 years but opted to the last chance for a 5th Gen. Too proven , capable, and reliable to NOT. I'm wary of the new platform(s), and the back seat in mine still folds flat, which the 6th Gen won't. If I'm wrong about the 6th gen reliability I'm confident in mine maintaining a great re-sale value
Great decision man 🎉 congratulations. That's completely normal it's all superficial. That happened during manufacturing. As long as you don't see any physical oil leaking, you shouldn't worried about it. Like you said at the beginning of the video, as simple as it get. Nevertheless, dead reliable vehicle. Just want it mentioned that I bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner myself back on December. I already put 7600 on it, no complaints no issues to report, and I used as a truck. Even though, i haven't had the chance to tow with it.
If I could afford to buy a 2024 4 Runner and keep my 2022 Tacoma I’d do it in a heartbeat! Love this color! I’d go SR5 Premium in 4x4. The quality control guys must have been off the day this rolled through final inspection!
I have a 2.16 Black 4Runner Premium 2WD with 65K miles on it, I am on the fence about trading it in on a new 2024 Limited 4wd, just on the fence if I should just keep the one I have since I have no car payment or "do it" and trade it in and put about $12K down so my payments wont be so big. It is a hard decision honestly. The payment isn't the issue honestly, I haven't had to do anything but brakes, battery and tires on my current 4Runner, just thinking of repairs that may pop up with the mileage creeping to 100K is all I am really thinking about.
Excellent choice Sir! You won’t be disappointed! I’m still on the fence about the new 2.4 turbo engine! I’m thankful there are some of these still available at dealerships! You can’t go wrong with this model! Appreciate you and your channel! With respect always from the Heartland! Mark in Iowa.
I'm really happy for you in getting the last of an icon. She looks good in that color, and with some accessories in black, she'll look even better. As for the engine block, i had to go out and check my 2016 4runner trail for the same thing. Fortunately for me, i don't have those small cracks, so if it was me, i'll be looking deeper into that issue, or i'll be wanting another 4runnner ( 5th gen 😊 ), hopefully if all goes well, those cracks are just superficial.
Congrats on having the mouth and the money to back it up. Looks like a good spec, keep that MSRP down. My neighbor just got a bright orange TRD Sequoia!
Love the old school simplicity!! Wish i could buy a spare one & put away somewhere!! I also love the manual back hatch!!! I also believe that will probably increase in value when they are not available anymore. I believe u made the right choice!!!! I have a 24 trd off road premium, im gonna go look under the hood right now, it has under 2000 miles on it.
My 2022 SR5 Premium 4WD engine block does NOT have those heat checking cracks. Yeah it’s a little bit of a bummer, but in the end, it’s only cosmetic. No pronlem.
congrats, that should last you 300,000 or more. 2 of my family members just both bought 24 4 runners and plan on having them forever. Long live the V6.
Idk…I like the MGM TRD Pro 4Runner more but I might be biased as I own one. The only novelty of this Underground color is that it’s limited to the 2024 MY vs MGM was available for most years.
Mlnice rig! Mak sure to cycle into low range a couole doze times. My wife bought a new 2023 trd offeoad and the first time she shifted into 4low a pin fell out of the shifter and locked it into low range. Toyota fixed it with no problems but if it happened after the warranty was up i would have been pissed. No problems since then. She loves it. Hers has the same casting marks. Its no issue.
Traded my 2016 SR5 Premium for 1 2023 TRD OFP 9 months ago. 4,900 miles and yesterday it shut down in the driveway after traveling 15 feet. It would not start and several warning lights, error messages kept activating. Toyota Care sent a flat bed and hauled it to the dealership.
Mr. Untamed, I first off want to congratulate you on your new 4Runner! I just sold my 2023 Limited a few weeks ago along with my 2023 Camry SE to buy a Crown Nightshade. I already miss my 4Runner. I will say, I definitely agree with you on us missing simplicity. However, I also think that change is necessary. It may take a year or two to get some initial kincks out of the new tech and powertrains, but I personally think they'll get it. Just my opinion though. That being said though, I am lightly considering buying a used 5th-gen or a used GX 460. I didnt realize how much I loved my 4Runner until it was gone, but it was the right decision for my circumstances to downsize my garage (even though I want to add one now 😂). I apologize for not being more active on your channel as of late, I'm just afraid to state my opinion because I know I'll get lit on fire by most of my other Toyota enthusiasts..... Anyways, that's enough on my little side conversation, the new rig is amazing!
You made the right decision. I’m also working with Robert during my purchase of the same 4Runner in white and he’s been great. New to the area and I thank you for the great videos at Ken Garff.
I bought a 2023 4Runner brand new in September last year. I never looked for those cracks, and after watching your video, I checked and I have the same surface cracks. Please get back to us with a follow-up video.
In 2018, Jeep offered many engines options on the JL platform, i got the v6 engine vs the 4-turbo. Jeep been phasing out the v6 and now pushing mostly the turbo version. I since then sold the Jeep to get an FJ Cruiser.
Congrats! Beautiful truck. My Underground 5th gen TRD off-road premium arrives at the port this week and I’m stoked. Looking forward to the videos you make of your new ride
Now im going to have a look on my 24 4runner Pro for those casting cracks or lines? Mine has over 5,000 miles and so far has ran just fine and also it has been on a 1800 miles trip. Still curious about them? Still love my 4runner
I am buying the same exact vehicle. I live in Utah and I am buying it in Texas. The dealership made me an offer I could not refuse. Had a deal in salt lake city but the Texas dealership beat it by $2800.I have a 2023 limited 4runner that is my wifes and I dont see the casting marks on it. I like the old school dependability and functionality and that goes away in 2024 in my opinion.
You won’t lose money on this. Curious what folks think of the driver’s seat comfort. I put 36K miles on my TRD Pro and found the seat to be too puffy. I liked the SR5 seats more.
I canceled my GX550 after the Toyota recalls the V6 TT in Tundra/LX600. I was looking at 4Runner before I picked the 2024 Ridgeline TrailSport. 4Runner is my second favorite Toyota SUV after the (old) Land Cruiser. The reason we ended up with a Ridgeline instead of a 4Runner because we currently have a Sequoia. We want to hold on to this V8 until it dies.
Smart man wise decision the 4Runner is a way better vehicle than the new Land Cruiser in my opinion. With the price difference of almost 15k, you can do a really useful mechanical mods to the 4Runner to overcome the lack of performance
Yes! Exact same vehicle I picked up last week! I already put my Go Rhino RB20s on and this is by far my favorite vehicle ever and I’ve owned a lot. I tagged you in some pics I posted earlier on.
