I saw Ricky talking about hosting the golden globes on an interview the other day. He was asked if he was ever worried about offending celebrities and his answer was "there's 200 celebrities sitting in the room in front of him that he offends, and 200 million people sitting at home watching laughing their asses off, thats why I do it"

Also that video was edited and censored. The part where Tom hanks is very obviously angered (due to his guilt, shame and fear of being outed as a nonce) is just after Ricky Gervais says at the very end of his opening speech "and stop fucking kids". It's sad to see that either he doesn't recognise the humour or he's offended by it, I would have hoped him being on the older side he would have had the same reaction as Di Niro, Pesci and the rest of their table. Really admire your reaction. As a Brit, our comedy is dark but honest however never serious. Love the fact you guys get it, got it in everyway, as you mention about our national football team. Bah, the "We're all gonna die soon" joke aged perfectly well, and Ricky would've told it regardless, even knowing about the pandemic, I'm 99% sure. All the times Ricky Gervais hosted were amazing, you could see the actors sweating. The first time he hosted the Golden Gloves they didn’t know what was coming their way. I love them. When Ricky said, ''We're all going to die soon and there's no sequel.'' He was referring to him being an atheist in that we are all going to die and there is no afterlife. It wasn't a reference to the Covid pandemic.

@@robo3715 Yh I first got wind of a possible new virus in china that was 3.4-3.7x the infection rate in late October early November 2019 and then 3 months later suddenly the GOV decide it's time to let people know about it, I was all like "dude for real why didn't they do anything 3 months ago if they already knew how infectious it was?".

Love Ricky, so sharp and tells it like it is which is why the audience is stunned, they all know they're superficial and self absorbed and his jokes prick their conscience. I think you reacted to the wrong thing. "We're all going to die soon, and there's no sequel" The joke was "and there's no sequel" which is poking fun at Religious people. The joke stands up even after (despite?) Covid and will be funny even in 10 years time.

I remember the first time I saw Ricky Gervais on TV, it was a little watched late night comedy news show on channel 4 in the UK called the 11o clock show. Ricky played a crusty pissed off outside broadcast presenter, very funny. They also had a slot for the "youth" presented by a then unknown Ali G.

Channel 4 just doesn't get enough credit for the talents it gave their first proper start to. Ricky Gervais, Sacha Baron Cohen, David Mitchell and Richard Ayoade all started off on channel 4 and have gone on to do bigger and better things.

Even if this gig was maybe the toughest ... it didn't deal the other 4 times much differently either. My thanks go to those who had the power to decide who hosts the GG. The person (s) who hired Ricky knew exactly what he was going to do and they also knew that this was not just a short-term amusement for the audience. It is part of an awakening out of an upbringing caused by the film industry and the press, to make the viewer accept actors as new gods and make movies and the ideas they proide a larger part of our life than it should. A highly complex conditioning system was created that poured huge amounts of money into the coffers and at the same time served the narcissism of producers and actors to the extreme. The end of this time has begun and Ricky has rang the bell.
