At 35:00 into the brilliant interview, the Crimea card gets played and today's esteemed guest thinks Crimea will stay in Russia. Not being a military person or specialist, I have listened to American General (Ret.) Ben Hodges who has repeatedly stated that if Crimea stays in Russian hands, the Ukraine will never have compete sovereignty from the Russian navy which will have the coastal cities of The Sea of Azov and The Black Sea at its mercy. Crimea must go back into Ukrainian control or the whole point of the war will be lost. This is why I think President Zelensky will never yield in letting Russia retain control of Crimea.
That would only be true if Russia is willing to sink commercial ships, once a truce of some kind is agreed. I doubt they would do that. Though Russia would LOVE to take Odesa.

If “FSB troops have control of the situation” (Russia propaganda) this could be the start of the final fall of the pro-invasion clique (which really includes Putin himself) the invasion of Kursk itself won’t cause public outrage in Russia, but it will cause outrage in the most Hawkish Russian politicians, for whom the name Kursk is Russia’s great victory and the breaking of the German Army in 1943, and cause political difficulty that way.

Disagree completely about both sides having “aspirations” as if the moral stances were identical. Why in the world would Ukraine stop when they know Russia will continue attacking and the West will squeal they have a deal. Stop only if NATO membership is instant.

what's the end game? Ukraine struggles to defend their own territory, what can they possibly achieve by taking some villages in a country that is 17 million km/2? Won't incursions into Russia just fuel the Russians recruitment efforts for soldiers?

@@fnmkd3142 the thing is tactically Russia doesn't need to defend it's border with Ukraine because there is absolutely no chance that Ukraine can sustain a conflict in Russia proper. Kursk is about 100 miles away from the Ukrainian border.... they're nowhere near it. i feel this debate won't be constructive though, people on times youtube usually live in an echo chamber.
32:10 Putin doesn't care what people in Moscow and St Petersburg think of his policies or actions, too (he is a dictator with over 500000 rosgvardia army to fight Russians who express any disagreement with him). The divide is not geographical but societal: there is Putin's elite - several hundred families who control resources and production, and several thousand bureaucrats who run the system. If sanctions were to target these people (like what Navalny was demanding all along), then this could make a real difference. These people are the backbone of Putin's regime. Without their continued support, his regime can not survive.

Concerning the hostage problem: The US and EU should just release a declaration that, if you travel to Russia now, you are fully responsible and cannot expect any help from your state if you get arrested inside of Russia. Putin is old too. He used to be a decent geopolitical player in his younger days. Lately, his accomplishments include: NATO expansion, Finland and Sweden. Hopefully his deal with dear leader/nk will backfire with military support to Ukraine from SK! Urrah Putin!

I like your interviews but perhaps our understanding of Russia might benefit from canvassing their neighbors insights & perspectives instead of just Western expert whose experience of Russia is usually Moscow/St. Petersburg universities?

That means that only the governor of New York can pardon him for the crimes he has been convicted of by the state of New York. The same applies to the crimes he will prosecuted for by the state of Georgia; if he is convicted of any of them, only a governor of Georgia would be able to pardon him.

The fact that ordinary Russians lined the streets and cheered as the Wagner Group headed towards Moscow does tell you some things. Putin was terrified and his people started tearing up roads and putting a ring of steel in place.
