"Ukraine allows NATO to buy time in a way, keeping Russia sort of tied up there so that it can work out what it needs for its own defence, on its own territory."
NATO must meet Russia's war society with higher defence spending and preparedness if it wants to deter Russia from more aggression in Europe and end the war in Ukraine, Dr Jamie Shea tells #timesradio

In the UK year on year there has been cuts on the armed forces for decades to the point now we are weak, we don't have enough to fight abroad and defend our country, this was said years ago there's been more cuts since then. All they could say was austerity whilst putting us in danger.

Well, if you push the peace button right now Russia will get away with having stolen 20 % of Ukraine inclusive Crimea and will have no reason to bring back the tens of thousands of Ukrainian children they have abducted. Plus they will have no reason not to start yet another war, since this one - in that case - went well for them. So please be careful on how you use that imperative.

believe your government who said WW2 was the war to end all war. After that war they sang bless them all the long the tall, there will be no more negation this side of the Ocean so drink up my lads bless them all. This was referring to all they were intending to force into fighting and dying to depopulate this country. And after all had killed each other and the survivors came back they had their actors singing and dancing in the streets of London laughing and cheering so all can just forget that their family members have been slaughtered supposedly for King and Country. It is a lot of mass murdering being forced on the people of this world.

@@user-yg8mn9ub4b I don´t get your message. First, what country are you talking about? And what´s the bearing on the actual waring going on? Should we let Putin have it all, lay down our weapons? I´ve heard that opinion before, I have a hard time taking it seriously. Saying "Give peace a chance" doesn´t really help much. I correct myself: At all. Rather the opposite since it gives a free hand to madmen like Putin.

It's why two neutral countries, Sweden and Finland decided that joining NATO was the wiser option, because the previous logic of trade promotes peace was found to not apply to Putin lead Russia. America wants to weaken Russia and take over the European natural gas Market and replace it with their more expensive shale derived LNG. Ukraine id Americas proxy war to achieve these aims. They also get to make more money through dollar expansion and move money from taxpayers to the military industrial complex. Putin had no reason to go into Ukraine until NATO provoked them. The claim that the US cannot support as much as they have in the future is incorrect. Per capita US is a small donor to Ukraine. The European NATO countries need to have a more independent strategy of defence without this mentality of the U.S. deploying and coming to our aid from across the Atlantic. They've got enough on their plate in the Pan Pacific arena and the AUKUS alliance commitment. Their role in a European NATO conflict should be backup rather than a main player. It's amazing that resupply of artillery shells that are needed in Ukraine and NATO could take 24 months? Surely this is a serious underestimate of the requirement and readiness strategy.

Dr Jamie Shea is someone we all need to listen to his warnings very carefully. With all his extensive experience working in the heart of NATO HQ he talks a great deal of sense. Defence of this country is the primary obligation of all politicians. Sadly since the end of the Cold War far too many UK governments have ignored this obligation claiming defence expenditure is no longer a vote winner and so can be ignored. Looking at the current chaos and lack of commitment towards Ukraine in the US & EU the future security of Europe is delicately exposed.

Very interesting outlook. Two observations from this "armchair general" (National service Tankie 1950s...!) (A) I do think Putin is very unlikely to attack any NATO country - he expected a walkover in Ukraine, and, although still not sane, would learn, after we saw his duplicity, it would be worse for Russia. (B) But - did Dr Shea not realise any Trump presidency would be pro-Putin, and he may have enough support from his people to abandon Ukraine? Maybe not invade any EU country, but worrying.

Title: Amidst the Storm's Embrace Introduction: In the distant echoes of ethereal time, As 2025 unveils its paradigm, We delve into a tale of chaos and strife, Where Davos encounters the storm's fierce life. Poem: When Davos faces an imminent storming tide, Persuaded, I may stroll alongside, in stride. But as the year unfolds its fateful course, War's specter emerges with resolute force. Amidst the halls where leaders convene, Visions of conflict, all too often seen. A symphony of power, discordant and loud, Each player seeking dominance, pride unbowed. The storm of war, with thunderous might, Drapes its shadow on the horizon's sight. In 2025, its touch draws near, A tumultuous dance, reignited with fear. Glossary: 2025: Symbolic of a future yet to unfold. Storming Tide: Metaphor for the impending conflict. War: A manifestation of human strife and discord. Summary: Within this poetic journey, Davos finds itself on the precipice of a momentous storm. As the year 2025 unravels, the specter of war asserts itself upon the global stage. The seeker, driven by persuasion, bravely navigates the tempestuous landscape. Amidst halls of power, where conflicts of interest collide, the storm of war looms ever closer. The year 2025 becomes a backdrop for the tale, highlighting humanity's persistent struggle with violence and its far-reaching consequences. Through this narrative, we ponder the enduring need for wisdom and unity, as we confront the storm's embrace and seek a path towards peace.

I wish this channel would invite diplomats as guests as much as former military men. It just feels like a platform for Nato and retired military folks to discuss war which is their 'bread and butter'. Of course their solution to problems will be military force and defense expenditure. Dr Shea refers to Russia becoming more assertive. Well Putin certainly wasn't in the first 8 years of his presidency. So what changed? Could it have been broken promises from the West and especially the US not to expand Nato east towards Russia border? Seems like there has been a breakdown of trust. Could we not have some guests from non military background to discuss this issue?

When they haven’t been able to definitively beat Ukrainian, you have to wonder what would make them want to take on NATO.

You are looking only to Putin... You are forgetting the other ones that Putin has been influencing against the West for decades... Brics were a creation of Putin's mind to defeat US hegemony and the West...in Africa he does the same for decades know... He supports Iran and Hamas... Trying to brake the supply channes for the West... China is watching all this dances...Only to mention some of the troubles we are facing... Did you untherstand by now what we have to deal? Geopolitics is a very sensitive topic, and in most of the time we the people don't have a clue what's going on. I try to think larger as I can...

I'd like to see Sweden join NATO, but...would it really matter in a Russia v NATO war? Probably not. They would clearly be on the NATO side. Finland was probably more important due to the 1000ish km border they share with pootler.
@markb8468
@markb8468 3 месяца назад
Also....if pootler was actually concerned about NATO, he wouldn't have removed russian forces from the Finnish border after they applied for membership. It's all pretext. NATO isn't invading Russia. Even pootler knows this.

Incorporating Sweden and Finland as part of an integrated defence of Scandanavia makes the northern flank of NATO far more secure. You are correct that Putin knows full well that NATO does not pose an imminent threat of attack against Russia.

I believe NATO's single largest issue is that it relies on a 'disjointed' band of weaker countries, many of which suffer from their own lengthy level of personal corruption. Trying to get everyone on the same page takes NATO much longer than it takes Putin to make & follow through with any given battlefield military objective.

NATO did a good job standardizing ammunition and communications, but the war in Ukraine has shown that there is a severe lack of standardization in heavy equipment (MBT's, SPG's, IFV's, AA, APC's etc.) and advanced munitions (AA, cruise missiles, ATGM's etc.). In a small conflict that lack of standardization doesn't matter. But in a large scale conflict where you need a system for building, training, suppling and repairing every different piece of equipment, you don't want a dozen different types of equipment all doing the same thing. It's a huge waste of logistical resources.

NATO countries specialize in abilities rather than trying to have everything, this allows smaller member countries to provide one or more necessary capabilities such as anti-submarine warfare, electronics warfare, air assets, naval assets, ground forces, anti-tank weapons. This allows the larger member countries to have a larger air force, naval force etc. since they don't have to spend dollars on those capabilities.

Did Ukraine agree to that? Why were they left out of the conversation when they were directly involved? Why can’t a SOVEREIGN nation decide things for themselves without listening to Putin? If you don’t want to fight then don’t. NOT ALL POLITICIANS ARE CORRUPT no matter how many scream they are. They are put into power by the people who vote for them.
