In response to Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the international community levied and implemented unprecedented sanctions against Russia, effectively cutting off a major economy from the global financial system. The Saltzman Institute will convene an expert panel to break down the intentions behind these sanctions, what impact they are likely to have on Russia, Putin, EU members, and what implications they have for wider international community. As sanctions increasingly become the coercive tool of choice for the US, the panel will help shed light on what these sanctions mean for the future of the war, and what the war can tell us about the future of economic statecraft.
Panelists:
Alexander Cooley, Claire Tow Professor of Political Science, Barnard College; former Director, Harriman Institute for the Study of Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe
Julia Friedlander, C. Boyden Gray Senior Fellow and Director, Economic Statecraft Initiative, GeoEconomics Center, The Atlantic Council; former senior policy advisor for Europe, U.S. Department of the Treasury
Richard Nephew, Program Director, Center on Global Energy Policy; former Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy, U.S. Department of State
Moderated by Allison Carnegie, Associate Professor of Political Science; International Political Economy Expert

There are no sanctions only "special economic operations".

The US and NATO should takeout the Russian ships in the Black Sea. Ships are particularly vulnerable to air strikes with harpoon missiles. At the same time take all the Russian oil and gas pipelines! Then Putin would have no leverage on a anyone!

This discussion of the oligarchs is a waste of time. It suggests to me these people have no real concept of the issues. There is one thing and one thing only that will have any real impact--energy. If Europe ends Russian energy imports and develops other sources. And if Biden reverses his absurd energy policies to help in this effort.

I think you have great point - Energy is the key.

@@johnmoore9404 Thanks. You know it amazes me that President Biden and the Democrats thanks the way to deal with Putin is to wage a war against American energy companies.

There is another approach to pure sanctions which is starting to be discussed here in Australia ie nuclear blackmail. For instance, what if Russia dropped nuclear bombs on Sydney and Melbourne (6m people) instead of European Ukraine. Australia is firmly in the Western alliance, but it is on the other side of the world to Europe and in another hemisphere to China/India. It would allow Putin to play the nuclear option without the fallout to himself and other European powers. It would appall the rest of the world but not have the damaging effect on the northern hemisphere powers, but l am sure China would not be too pleased as they would be the nearest major power.
