In this video I´m trying to find my putting style. And I´m hoping it´ll help you find yours and/or get better at putting 😀.
How I went about it.
Starting out I went a round of 18 holes to see how many missed putts I had. In the meantime only recording those missed putts. That was not fun, haha. Then I tried a bunch of different putting techniques and practiced putting in my backyard til the point of feeling like I´m ready to try those missed putts once more. With the hope of improving my score. Find out how it went in the video if you´re interested. If not that´s cool. Have a nice day either way.
Hope you enjoy the video! ❤🤘
/Jonathan

I just want so say one thing as a beginner. Jonathan's videos are the absolute main reason I bought some L64 discs. I am convinced his content makes higher sales to begginers more then any of the endorsed pros. He's so relatable to us with all the struggling, practicing, fails and wins its unbelievable and I'm sure I'm not alone with that opinion .Keep him close L64, because he's totally worth it!

Haha. After watching a handful of these vids, I started looking for those black on black hats and the hoodies are pretty cool too. Planning on trying out all brands of discs though. Will definately be adding L64 discs. Love the content. If you can make me laugh, you get my subscription, likes and shares.

I must second this! When I started out I got almost only Innova disks. Now half my disks are Lattitude 64°. Just yesterday I bought a “starter set” for my son with Saint, Fuse and Keystone… Yeah, I see now it says “Advanced” all over the box. I guess he’ll just have to put his big boy pants on! 😅

I’ll try not to overstate this…. You have the best dg content on RU-vid. Thank you for really “putting” 😉 yourself out there. Keep up the great work! I highly suggest you find a local putting league (or start one yourself). It’s a ton of fun and a huge confidence builder for putting under pressure. Cheers!

I’m not gonna lie. I’ve loved watching you journey and seeing your form improve! It’s really motivating and you putt release looks so clean after all the practice. Your “timing” is also way way more consistently smooth and looks the same in all the clips be really jerky before hand.

My friends showed me a great putting practice drill that sort of automatically finds the putting range at which you start to get inconsistent, which for me is one of the biggest things to work on in my own putting. The drill works like this: Get a random disc and put it on the ground 10 feet from the basket. Putt 2 putters in succession at the basket. If you make both putts, flip the ground disc backwards to extend the distance slightly. If you make one putt and miss one, leave the ground disc where it is. If you miss both putts, flip the disc forward, decreasing the distance slightly. Use 4-8 putters so you don't have to run to the basket every round. After a few rounds, you'll arrive at an area where you might make both, you might only make one, or you might miss both. It'll show you the range you need to work on (spoiler alert: it's a much smaller distance than you probably think it is! My challenge range ends up about 18-20 feet...). And the more you work on it, the larger that distance should get. Soon those 18 footers that you use to step up and think "uh oh, I have to make this one, but I could totally miss it..." become automatic for you. And plenty chance to develop shot style, grip, routine, etc.!

Even your misses were closer, Jonathan! One thing I like to do before I putt is tell myself "Stance, Grip, Line, Rip" and those things help me dial in my positioning before I putt. I get in the correct stance. Once settled, I make sure I'm holding the disc exactly the way I need to, then I build a line from my body where the disc will go back to, to where it needs to go. Then I let it rip along that line.
@shiftonephoto

I could tell the biggest thing from the old putts is the new putts you're really following through and committing to the line. Looks so much better!
@Iliyena87
@Iliyena87 2 года назад
The amount of strokes saved is great in it self, but the actual close misses is the best improvement I'd say. All the old misses resulted in a not at all easier comeback putt where'as your new photage shows an easy comeback putt in most cases. Saves even further strokes being able to miss "safe" and thereby trying even longer putts with more confidence! I have tried some different putters and I think the DD Deputy feels really good in the release, not had the time to practice with it though.

Eh, yes they do, not intententionaly as a safe miss ofc. But they putt different on different baskets, and many use different techniques at different distances and situations to not go to long no matter what gets in the way. And by this they only have to worry of a rollaway when hitting the basket missing low or high. Using a more push putt over a spin is one way eg. Not all pros are fearless ;)

Jonathan, about your routine; in the future, you should add walking up to the disc/mini to it and my suggestion is that you walk near the spot, look at the basket, and do that "successful putt" weird face with the hand's motion too definitely... whatever - just so the basket knows what is coming and can fear for it. Also, this might prepare you for the putting. But scaring the basket, that is the most important! ;)
@marcuspowell2510

You look like you are shooting AT the basket now, while some of your first putts look like you were just trying to hyzer/float them in. I still have a lot to learn but shooting AT the basket has really helped. Keep it up and thanks for taking us along.

Practice making putts, don't practice missing. Find a distance where you never miss and just putt alot from that distance, it sounds weird but it works. Someone else probably said this, but it's the best tip I've ever come across.

This might be the best and most helpful discgolf video on the internet. I started sinking 25m putts more often than not after doing this instead of trying to copy what one's "supposed" to do.
@mbsouthpaw1
@mbsouthpaw1 2 года назад
This is awesome. I have always taught people looking to improve putting that the first step is to find your "true natural" putt; the one that you can re-create without thought. Once you find that, pointing it in different directions is trivial. And the first half of the video shows you doing that. The other thing you need is data and feedback, and I see you doing that too. One suggestion. When thinking about how to practice, the very best distance to focus on is your 50% make range. For that, I putt in pairs, and if I make both I step back a pace for the next, and if I miss both I step in. Make/miss stays right there. This puts you right at your 50% range and then I work on extending my 50% range. How far back can you push it? Also, don't forget to work on longer putts. Those 40+ footers take more power and are different, so make sure to include some distance putting in the mix. Finally, practice hyzer/anhyzer and straddle putts. Not only do you need those specific putts sometimes, but they'll make your default putt better too. Cheers, and GREAT VIDEO!!

Just one final tip that I have found to never fail! Smile. Smile prior to putting, it puts you into a better mindset make or miss.

I have been playing a long time but definitely still consider myself a beginner amateur. I do have one tip that I always tell all my friends. Have you played catch with a friend? It is so much easier to throw a ball a disc whatever to your friend. Think of the basket as your friend. My friend is named Rob and he sometimes drops the disc but when I really think about throwing to a person and not a basket it makes it so much easier:). Jonathan, you should give the basket a name:)

When I first started putting, my outs were going left as well, like hyzers. I rectified this by turning my palm up on release. It acted more of anhyzer making the disc fly straight for the entire flight. With more of a flop putt I found major success.

I was practicing my putting last night in my backyard! I've found out that my straddle putt is most accurate up to 20 ft. My rock putt is legit up to 25 ft. After that my plush putt turns into a full out spin putt. Bending the elbow into your waist line generates a lot of power but I miss right to left a lot. Eventually I'll get the hang of it lol!!! Much love!!!!
@villekonttinen5018

Hey, it's great to see you in action! love the content and I'm looking forward to see more! My own putting looks actually pretty similar to what Calvin seems to be doing and in case it will be of any help to you I'd like to share my thoughts about it. I tried to come up with the simplest way of explaining it and the most effective thing would be to just take your putter and the grip you found. It looks just about perfect for this. (have mercy and get a grip Jonathan) and just start gently popping and hopping it upwards with the fingers under the disc. (in a way it wont leave your hand ) When you find that nice spring-like fluid tempo you can try uncurling your wrist while doing it and the disc should move from next to your hand to in front of it. That's the release point when you are actually putting like this. Now you just add that to your normal arm motion and the disc should have a nice clean straight up and forward flight. This is how I found my own putt, Instead of building from stance to release. I tried what I can do with literally just my fingers, then what happens when I add the wrist movement, what does the elbow movement has to add (I can pretty much putt from 5 meters by just using fingers, wrist and the elbow) and (finally for me lol) if the movement starts from my shoulders. At this point I started feeling it's pretty much all I need and ended up what I would like to call a "minimalistic" stance. Adding any more to it just doesn't do anything for me but add more variables that can result in a miss.(maybe just little more hip and leg action if it's a long putt) And finally some overall tips I'd like to give is to just be relaxed. Like seriously, try putting in slow motion. You'd be surprised how slow you can move and still have a decent putt. This way you also have time to really observe yourself and take notes of for example the angle of your disc and where you release it. Which leads to the next tip which is just to experiment with the angles when you putt (flat, hyzer, anhyzer, nose down, nose up) and another angle to watch is your shoulders, avoid slouching. (not that you'd be doing so Jonathan) I have that tendency and it helps greatly to put my otherwise useless arm behind my back while putting.. the other useless thing that came to my mind is that I sometimes feel that my pinky is in the way and scrapes the rim on release so sometimes I just lift it up or hold it behind the ring finger if it's a problem. One important thing for me is also the plastic and firmness of the disc, I prefer a more softer, bendy, eraser like surface which I think kind of softens the springy release to make it more smoother in flight versus a very hard stiff kind of plastic. so that's another thing to experiment with that as well (I putt with westside discs soft Bt Shields but I have a Pure and the zero medium plastic kinda works too, sadly I don't have a soft one to compare) Phew. a long one.. this is why I don't write much comments. But I hope it's clear and offers some help or insight to anyone reading :)

Great job on the putting practice! And a quality video like always 👌🏻 The thing that helped my putting style the most in recent years was a tip from an old Eagle McMahon putting video where he suggests to grab a stack of discs and start putting from the distance you make all the putts. For me that was 3-4 meters. Then with the stack of discs just putt away at a relatively fast pace. For me it was a putt every 5 seconds. Just focus on making the putt and with every putt start to make slight adjustments to the swing so that the disc doesn't flutter so much, releases every time at the same angle etc. Even though it's not the focused golf putt it helps with finding the right rythm of the down and up swing along with a clean release. You'll quickly notice if your grip doesn't allow for a quick grab-and-go type of putt. I hope this helps someone!
