Today we are going to see how a $50 2007 Apple MacBook A1181 stands up against a similarly priced enterprise grade laptop. I decided to go with a Dell Latitude E6500 as the competitor as it was within the $50 budget and had somewhat similar specs to the MacBook A1181. In this video, I will compare the quality and features of the two laptops and then I will install Elementary OS to both laptops to run benchmarks and basic practical performance tests.

Dude this is an awesome video! You and Sebi basically motivated me to dig out my t60 and revived it; and then bought a t430 and threw a classic keyboard on it. Keep up the good work! I do own a mbp 2012, but every time I want to give that a chance, I always just come back to my thinkpads. P.S., Kubuntu/Neon, or Xubuntu plus Vivaldi gives my t60 the best browsing performance for me, espeically on streaming 1080p videos with few frame drops. I'm going to install Elementary again on T60.

Some notes about the Latitude E6500: I have the sister laptop, the Precision M4400. The best screen available is a 1920x1200 RGBLED, which has IPS-like colors and almost IPS viewing angles. Mine has it and it is really nice. It can also be upgraded to a quad core QX9300. I believe your latitude could be upgraded to the 1920x1200 screen, but you would need a top cover and bezel specific to that panel. And given that the latitude has integrated graphics (the precision version has quadro) you can't upgrade to QC, AFAIK. However, you could put in something like a T9800 if you wanted. Is it worth it to spend that much on upgrades for the old latitude? Probably not, but you could make that machine a lot nicer if you really wanted to. I think the Precision M4400 is quite special because the Thinkpad equivalent, the W500, can't take a QC without mods.

I didn't catch if the Dell had removable CPU? I had The IBM Thinkpad business in the end of Core 2 days (2008) & it took a quad 2.4GHz Q9100 something & 8gb RAM. While not officially said to support, some of those Enterprise machines had good BIOS updates to patch into latest CPU revisions. 1 of mine had a swapable nVidia GT-9700M 1G upgrade although the M GPU's then sold for as much as the laptop.

your dell latitude E6500 is the low cost one. this laptop exist with a nvidia quadro, a full hd screen and a webcam.... it can even have 3G... and, with that one (with have a different bottom base than your) you can upgrade the motherboard and put the one of the dell precision M4400 on it... (you have to replace the heatsink too because even if it look like the one of the E6500 it not the same) and for open the bottom cover, you have only one screw to take off even if the HDD have the 4 screws on it... and it not really have to be removed only unscrew is ok because it's a screw with a spring attached in the bottom cover so it can't be lost! the precision M4400 and latitude E6500 are the best laptop i know for the design and well, the building quality is also the best i know... they can fall they not really die. i now have a dell precision M6600 with is e BEAST all the gaming laptop are just garbage if i compare but they are not the same price... the precision M6600 brand new was around $6000. after i got the fist pro laptop of my life with was the latitude E6500 i can't go back to supermarket garbage laptop version it's absolutely impossible. and mac is absolute rubbish.

I mean, I can believe it. Used Apple products have a markup just from being Apple. What's unfortunate is Apple's hardware markup for what they sell, most people won't buy the highest end because of that, a $1500 gaming laptop will blow a $1500 mac out of the water. But the other thing is that business class machines have lower resale value (and tend to be reasonably realistically priced) purely because of how many are bulk purchased
@Henry5623
@Henry5623 4 года назад
If you really gave it some effort you could shop around and find even newer more powerful laptops that'd blow them both out of the water. The point of the video being you can spend the same amount of money and get twice the computer by avoiding the 'apple tax'.

But I got a 2006 Mac Mini 1.1 A1176 ($10 from neighbor - but no top shell, might buy a clear cover case later), 320GB Laptop HDD ($10), and power adapter from a used computer store ($10). Slowly upgrading it when parts are cheap enough. Even with the max upgrade it's shitty at best: Duo 2400(?), 1G+2G DDR2 667MHz, SATA Storage, potential USB WiFi and/or Bluetooth (from internal n WiFi and BT 2). Will install mOS 10.6.8 on internal HDD for historical purposes and Win 10 Pro OEM x86 on 320GB; once I get enough parts.

i think the comparison it's not totally fair with the Macbook because the Dell has twice more RAM and runs a little bit more faster but anyway the Dell it's a better option for people with your requirements. The normal Macbooks in general, older and new, are for people who very likes MacOS and only do a very basic things like writing. The people who really requires a lot of performance go for Apple "pro" options and usually are people who are enchained to MacOS like video editors or music producers.

Track points died off for a reason. They were a inferior design that only lasted as long as they did for the same reason everyone used Internet Explorer for as long as they did; aka they didn’t have better options yet. Track pads have made leaps and bounds in recent years especially with multi-finger gestures being able to do with one hand what it’d have taken two in the past. I should point out that yes I have in fact used - both - track pads and track points and I don’t mean that I used a track point for ten seconds and then gave up. My ThinkPad T60 for example has both a track pad and track point. I use the track pad 90% of the time because it’s superior over a track point. HOWEVER, I can see why some cling to the notion that track points are somehow better. They are in some ways more convenient as in not having to move your hands off home row to use them. That said as I mentioned above in my Internet Explorer reference, track points died off for a reason, and no amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth from the old schoolers will bring them back because lets be honest for a second. If given the choice, we’d ALL be using a mouse anyway lol Nice to see you uploading again. Always enjoy your content.

@AAComputersandTechnology
@AAComputersandTechnology 4 года назад
So here's what my experience was like. The first two years you'll probably just be doing mainly gen Eds and maybe two or three actual engineering classes and a few computer science classes. Though the engineering classes I took those first two years basically just taught us how to use Excel and Google stuff, we also did get to build model rockets which was pretty cool. The next two years are followed by a lot of classes that just teach you how things work in theory (resistors, transistors, circuit theory, discrete signal processing, etc..), you do a lot math (LOTS OF CALC and a tad bit of differential equations). I got one lab (2ish hours) that showed us how to solder and one lab that actually touched on how to prototype circuits in eagle. They never taught us how to build anything from start to finish .... I'm mainly a hands on learner, and to be honest I was pissed that most of the major consisted of busywork and theory, I struggled a lot because of that and I really didn't enjoy my time as an undergrad. If you want it bad enough, it's definitely doable as long as you are motivated, don't expect it to be enjoyable though. Now if you want to actually learn something .... get an engineering related internship as soon as possible when you start your undergrad, they pay well and you will learn more from one year of interning than you will throughout your entire B.S. The internship I had let me work part time (about 20 to 30 hours a week) so I could still do school part time. It may take you longer to graduate .... but if you have an internship that pays decently already, who cares... Also get involved in clubs that actually build things, I was in cubesat and once again I learned way more from that than I did from any of my engineering classes. Doing these things will also make you a much more marketable hire once you are out of college vs someone who got a 4.0 during their undergrad but did absolutely nothing else.

@@laptech3767 I'm not a huge math person either. If you hate math, then you're going to hate Computer Engineering. Computer science has a little less math. If you want almost no math in a computer related field, then IT is probably your best bet. If your the college has a Computer Engineering Technology program, that would also be something to consider too. Computer engineering technology is supposedly more hands on and less math and theory. However, CET's are not as sought after on the job market vs real Computer Engineers, just keep that in mind.

Well for these things you they are so cheap you cant exactly compare $10 difference anymore. For example I got a Latitude D830 for C$35 (~US$26) with a far better 1680x1050 1:600 display in mint condition that crushes both of the laptops in display quality and is in a far better condition. I can spend the rest I saved on for a cpu and ram upgrade to match the E6500. Even without upgrading them it's already faster than the macbook anyways (I went all out with the pleasure of a Core 2 Extreme). Tbh though I spent much more than that because having that kind of scratched lid on that e6500 or that kind of yellowed plastics on the machook or the cracked chassis of that T410 listing are a big no no for me.

I'd pick Dell over Apple any day. Serviceability on Dell laptops is second to none, plus I just like the aesthetics. Also, I've never got the whole thing about viewing angles for the screen. You sit in front of the laptop and that's it, there's no need for viewing the screen at extreme angles. Another thing, the trackpoint is a business laptop feature for the most part and still serves a purpose on these laptops because it's said that you can easier use it one-handed than the touchpad and it's also functionable while wearing gloves.

You know? I very, very rarely comment on RU-vid channels. But I have to chime in, because this one stings a little bit. I subscribed to your channel back when you had around 200-300 subs. if I remember correctly. I think I recognized the incredible potential of your channel, since you seem to be a responsible, wise, brilliant young man, who cares for his family. I'm 42 years old. I have a degree on IT, and a masters in computer engineering. Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android… they all have their respective shortcomings and their advantages. I use a Mac, and a Windows PC partitioned with Linux on a daily basis, I also carry with me an iPhone & an Android phone. But to basically say that macOS and Apple's hardware is garbage and an invalid platform to code or do "serious" work (you didn't say this tacitly, of course, yet, that's what it sounded like) is just not what I thought you were all about. Perhaps it's just a touch of the arrogance of youth. Hardware and OSs exist for different reasons, but the primary one is to make money. The sooner you realize this, IMHO, is the fastest way to keep your mental sanity. There's no denying Windows has the largest installed user base, but that's no coincidence, or sign of superiority; it's the result of a series of very cunning, cutthroat and smart decisions that Microsoft took so long ago, that you weren't alive yet. Perhaps, you had to "be there" to comprehend the magnitude of such, sometimes invasive, acts. Because, trust me, reading about it in history books is simply not the same, as many will attest, I'm sure. Apple and the Mac exist for a completely different set of reasons. And believe you me, Apple's Board of Directors are no shrinking violets. They are also as cutthroat as they come. But in different areas, and with different economic motives and values. I could write for hours, but I'll end it by saying that having worked for both companies before, I hope someday you'll realize that by ostracizing an entire portion of the population for their choice in Operating System or brand of hardware, just doesn't make good financial sense. Nor does it help to exalt one platform over the other. Today you lose me as a subscriber, but you're a bright man. I hope you figure out what I said, as mere suggestions, of course; soon enough. And from the bottom of my heart; I wish you the best of luck. Although, I would argue that with your smarts, you'll hardly need it. Good luck, kid.

So you mention being subscribed to someone for what would appear to be many years, just to in turn unsubscribe from them because in one single video they simply state a opinion that differs from yours? Brilliant logic... Nonetheless while I would argue you’re point about Windows and Apple having vastly different application focused goals is correct, it’s also not correct at the same time and becoming less correct with every passing day. Linux is a great example of this. In enterprise applications we both know how dominant Linux is. However in recent years it’s no surprise to anyone that as Apple destroys themselves through their own nickel and dimming money hungry corporate greed, and while Microsoft dooms themselves through privacy invading spyware laced Windows 10 that breaks itself through it’s own updates, the Linux platform as a whole has become vastly more recognized and supported as a result. This consequently leading Linux to be ever evolving to be not only more user friendly but also incorporating gaming support, audio/video support through a ever increasing support based of applications, and so on and so forth as people look to rid themselves of the nonsense Apple and Microsoft are doing and the software support for Linux skyrockets as a result. Getting back to what I mentioned before about how I agree with you that Microsoft and Apple have vastly different application focused goals, they also don’t. Apple proves this as they are trying to adapt to modern times with Apple based streaming services, gaming services, and in general breaking out of this self isolating enclosed ecosystem they have become known for having. Consequently as a result of them doing this they’re opening the flood gates of comparisons between themselves and all the other superior products on the market that they are now competing against. In the end you don’t have to agree with it but Apple’s user base is shrinking more with every year that passes. As a result they are attempting to pull in new users through software support that Apple wasn’t initially known for and consequently Braxton highlighting how out of touch and completely inadequate Apple is in this new era of computing that they are trying to compete in was spot on. This isn’t the early 2000’s anymore where Apple was focused purely on video and entertainment applications. Apple has to adapt to survive long term. The criticism they get from the software community is well deserved since it’s Apples own fault for undermining themselves much in the same way Intel has and as a result is now catching endless lashings from the tech community as AMD continues to run circles around them due to Intel not feeling as though they had to continue to innovate and try. Well karma is catching up with them and they’ve got no one to blame but themselves. Apple is in that same boat and the hell they catch for their poor software support is known industry wide and well deserved at that. As I said this isn’t the early 2000’s anymore. On a side note if you’re 42 years old you should be old enough and mature enough to be able to cope with someone having a simple opinion that differs from yours without feeling the need to immediately unsubscribe. If you’re that sensitive as to where a simple difference of opinion causes you to immediately burn a bridge and remove yourself from the wonderful subscriber base that Braxton has then maybe you shouldn’t be on RU-vid to start with because we’re all going to continue to support him and his great content. I’d reconsider and re-subscribe if I were you since you’re the one missing out in the end if you don't.

@@Henry5623 You must forgive me, Henry, English clearly isn't my first language and fear some things that I tried to say were a bit lost in translation. And I must apologize in advance if I do the same with this post again. First, thank you for your response; I found it insightful, not entirely correct, in my opinion, but agreeable, nonetheless. Respectful debate is becoming a thing of the past and that is something, I find, horribly saddening. Anyway, I didn't unsubscribe because of this particular video, it's been more of a gradual transition; however, suggesting that I'm immature for unsubscribing and for literally saying that "shouldn’t be on RU-vid to start with" is just a bit rude, not to mention condescending. I would never dream of telling you what internet services, platforms, channels, or content to consume. I can do whatever I please, as long as I at least try, to be respectful to everyone, as do you should. Even though we might disagree. And I'm well aware that by putting my opinion out there, gives license to everyone to comment on it, we shouldn't lose sight of being respectful to each other. I think Braxton is a brilliant young man, that's not going to change no matter what... much less a difference of opinion. The thing is, I've been gradually disagreeing with him more and more frequently as of late, so, I took the liberty to chime in; but my comment was never meant to be demeaning, or hurtful to anybody, I apologize if that was the case, to you, to Braxton, and to anyone else who felt this way. Perhaps I was, again, thinking in Spanish, and writing in English (Something you should never do, by the way :P), but I mostly agree with what you say. I sense from you a touch more mixed feelings towards Apple than towards Microsoft, and your passion for Linux, which, I agree, in any Enterprise IT environment, Linux is the dominant, not to mention more professional, stable, and almost guaranteed peace of mind choice. And even though what you say it's true, you know? about Linux rapidly evolving into a fuller, richer experience for the user, I just don't know why people simply don't see it as a viable choice... I speak about every day people, not professionals or IT Department managers or whatever else. I just don't know why... I have a theory, though... I think the commercial OSs keep hammering on that Linux is hard to use, hard to learn and there's no software for it; obviously for their financial benefit. None of that's true of course, but consumers are just not willing to take the risk. Anyway, here's the point I was trying to make... Let me start thinking in English so that I can express myself correctly, hopefully... I wasn't talking to or about people a bit, or a lot, more knowledgeable about technology, you and I are privileged in that regard. I'm talking about the every-person. That just want their phones to work, and work faster, their computer to run smoother, and more stable. They don't care what's in it, what makes it work, or how. They paid money, they expect the thing to work. Most of them expect them to work forever. I'll give you an example; how many aunts, uncles, or other family members have told you something along the lines of "help me with this thing". I bet more than a few. Personally, way back in the day, I used to have clients who brought their Macs to me with a copy of the latest OS X (that's a roman numeral 10, not "OS Ex", for you younger folks), and have me install the latest upgrade because they found it too confusing. Or when Apple started distributing new macOS versions through the Mac App Store, and the pop-up "Ready to Install macOS [Insert version here]" is coming up everyday for a month... they just have this fear that something's going to go wrong, and they don't want the responsibility, so they leave it to the "pros"... at least, that way, if something goes wrong, they have someone to blame. You know? I took some classes in the early to mid 2000's at Apple, in the old 1 Infinite Loop Campus, and had the chance to meet Mr. Jobs... he said something one time, I think he even said it publicly somewhere, he said about the Apple of the mid 90's that was 3 months from being bankrupt, that the problem with Apple was, that Apple had forgotten who Apple was. He was right. Then he focused on Apple's strengths. And here we are. I liked the small jab at my age by saying "this isn't the 2000's anymore" it made me laugh, and I agree! Completely! I wish Apple was more focused! I only wish! Cook has eroded most of the values Jobs left when he passed. Now it's a dispersed company driven by pure greed. I agree 100% with you when you say that Apple is losing market share, of course they are! By the way, I never disagreed with Braxton on Apple's out of touch modern approach to modern computing... I agree! The most affordable notebook they make costs $1000 bucks, and it's a mere Core i3, MacBook Air! $1249 iPhone Pro, anyone? Not to mention, that if you want just the most basic freedom, like adding a new GPU or more RAM, the MacPro starts at $5000 and the most expensive made-to-order top of the line costs upwards of $55,000. Want to add more storage to your MacBook Pro measly 128GB? Nope! Can't do it... they're capsules now. Deal with it... that's pure arrogance. Yet... interestingly, in my career, over-the-counter consumers (that's what I call them, I hope it's not offensive), seem to have less trouble using a Mac, than Windows. That's just me, and that's just one man's experience. The same can be said of Microsoft... remember Vista? That was Ballmer's arrogance at its finest. No Office suite for Android or iOS? That was Ballmer too... how'd that work out? Suddenly, Microsoft remember who Microsoft was... they are a good software company... To you they might seem less than mediocre, but make no mistake, when it comes to consumer software, they know what's what. Users LOVE that apparent freedom they have to use Microsoft Word on their PC as well as their iPhone, or iPad. All for a small monthly or yearly fee! (That's sarcasm, btw). They think it's some kind of witchcraft that recalcitrant rivals "allow" them to use the same piece of software on their "hate-each-other's-guts" brands. The truth is, neither Microsoft or Apple care about you, or me. They just care about money. I COULD go on... lol... but I won't... that's enough. Again, I'm sorry for my broken English, half expressed thoughts that I don't know how to translate, and I'm sorry if I offended you, or anyone else. Peace to all!
