Common practice for metal roofs with the profile you used is to screw the panels down at 12" on center in the flats at each purlin. You should then use sheet to sheet screws at about 20" on center on the high ribs bottom to top to prevent wind lifting the sheet from the sides. Also common practice is to overhang the roof sheets a couple of inches so water will drip off the edge. Stopping the roof sheets at the wall line will allow water to roll over the edge and creep up under the roof sheet causing other problems. Other than that, great job. I love the comment about lining the panels parallel on the roof. Many times I have seen erectors not pay attention to this and have to deal with panel "creep" as the progress down the roof. By the way, I have worked in the metal building industry for just shy of 50 years.

As some one that has worked on roofs for about 5 years now, I would say you did a better job on this roof than most professionals. Also the felt paper is there to help protect the underside of the panels from moisture because if you dont over time the panel could start rusting. Also you are just as sketchy workin on a roof as any roofer so your already halfway there to being a professional now. Great roof 9/10 would recommend.

Thought the same. I know the aw 'shucks is part of the channel vibe, but at some point even the class clown knows what he's doing. Jason's earned his spot at the table, he doesn't have to always pretend he's a total noob - it's not gonna alienate us. And there's plenty of topics he can be a total newbie at, but clearly framing is not one of those. I wish he'd lean into it, not be afraid of the talent he's amassed. Something like Essential Craftsman, Four Eyes Furniture, etc have done.

This roofing video is hands down the best roofing video of all time- mirroring my own experience and expertise roofing my first chicken coop. Thankfully (or maybe unfortunately) I didn't have to figure it out while on an OSHA-approved ladder on a scissor lift. I just needed a ladder on the ground. And, yes, I probably overbuilt my chicken coop roof, but in my defense we had a tornado outbreak 3 days later and that sucker was solid! Also, I feel like the 'Safety First' song is some kind of strange human ancestral memory that we all share across the globe. I feel like we've all sung it a time or twenty while being...the absolute safest we can be in the given situation and taking safety very seriously.

Just a thought from a roofer. The backwards blade trick works but if you cut it that way instead of shearing the metal with snips or a nibbler the cut edge is a lot more prone to rust. Also the heat from the blade friction can damage the paint and void the paint warranty. Not to mention the little hot bits of steel can damage other parts of the paint.

If you are, the gutter apron that you forgot too install first and installed later with screws through the face may need to be replaced or at least you will have to remove all those screws to do so, same thing if your going to put gutters on it, I would definitely put on some metal fascia and keep the rain off the wood fascia, it'll last longer and keep the rain from rotting it and looks nicer as well!!! But it does look awesome dude, nice job! 👍

Here in Australia where metal roofing is far more common (primary roofing material for 150+ years) we dont use ply under the roofing iron, just sarking and screw directly to the battens. Even the sarking is fairly recent most roofs done 20 years ago or cheaper jobs dont even have that, just metal screwed to the battens. Im guessing the plywood is a carry over from shigles? It looks like it would rust the roof a lot faster having all that contact area.

That scissor lift looks good. In 2014 I had to re-roof my garage, shed and workshop. I used ladders and a scaffold tower. I got it all done in a week with help from a friend. After it was done I woke up with a very painful foot, it seemed that all the going up and down ladders had caused plantar fascitis. That was very painful and took about three weeks to get over.

You need to go back up and install screws on the lower edge 2" above the bottom for wind protection. One screw in EVERY CHANNEL (the flat part) to guard against the wind. Otherwise the sheets (metal) will either bend or fly off and you'll be picking them up a few hundred yards away. I spent my construction career (43 yrs.) framing and roofing). You might want to listen to my advice on this.
@woodoctor

Maybe try to get them so they go through the gutter apron that they forgot to install first and was face screwed when it was put in at the end
@75keg75
@75keg75 Год назад
Should the screws go into the raised part of the sheet not the gutter? In Aus all sheets are done in the raised part as that rubber becomes brittle and if it in the gutter it leaks.. Similar the deck boards - do the reeds go up or go down? (Down is correct as it aids in water dripping off).
@ipick4fun27
@ipick4fun27 Год назад
I installed a small metal roof. I have seen videos that few are on the raised area. I put them on the valley. There is nothing backing the raised area. If I were to drive a screw there, it will crush it. Otherwise it will be very loose. Besides, I don’t see longer screws at the home center.
@75keg75
@75keg75 Год назад
@@ipick4fun27 different ideas for different countries I guess. Here most are installed in ridge and the screws are 60-90mm (2-3inch). They do crush the ridge if you go to far so it a matter of getting it in and possibly backing out if the ridge looks odd. That applies for both metal and polycarbonate sheets. Initially the valley method is okay as rubber is pliable but over time it gets brittle and can open up. The “paper” may stop that water ingress from affecting the ply board…
@jessipandarawr
@jessipandarawr Год назад
@@75keg75 yeah, supposed to be in the ridges, even here too. There's foam that goes into the inside of the ridges, and sealing washers that are supposed to be used. Once his rubber washers degrade from the sun and weather, this roof will leak like a son of a gun
@ipick4fun27
@ipick4fun27 Год назад
@@75keg75 Just that you know, these type of metal roofing are typically used for sheds, car ports and such where little leak doesn't affect anything. My guess for house and building they probably have better ones. I don't even have plywood or paper underneath. I used it for chicken coop so if it leaks, i'll just use come caulking to fix it. If water gets in, it wouldn't cause much damage. Even those architectural shingles for residential roofs are rated for 30, 40, or 50 years. So it's matter of time they leak. I guess you can replace screw if the rubber degrade to point that it starts leaking. It still bets replacing the entire roof.
@75keg75
@75keg75 Год назад
