If you've been putting to the apex of the curve on breaking putts chances are you aren't making many and leaving them on the low side. Putting to the TANGENT is far superior than putting to the Apex of the curve. In this video we give you a definition of what the Apex is, give an illustration of what the Apex is, why you should not putt to the Apex, explain what the TANGENT LINE is and how to putt to the TANGENT and make more putts.

What is The Golf Paradigm (Pair-a-dime)?
The Golf Paradigm is a theory that encompasses a Whole-In-One approach to improvement. It begins with the overall paradigm; i.e. the game of golf. Followed by two parts that are always to remain in balance; i.e. the golf yin/yang - ‘improving’ and ‘enjoyment’. Helping to maintain that balance are the 5 elements of the game; the swing, club fitting, health/fitness, mental, and integration. Knowing which area to focus on and how the other areas supplement that helps to form the golfers ‘recipe’ for improvement. As the golfer improves their recipe, or what is focused on, changes and this is what allows them to reach levels of play they never thought possible. It’s not magical, but it’s close.

This probably explains why most amateurs miss breaking putts on the low side. PROs always hit more break. I imagine if we amateurs just allowed more break than we think, we would sink a few more anyway ! - very good video !

I can't count how many times I've aimed at the upper side of the hole only to miss on the upper side. Picking the apex has all to do with ball speed. I will try this tangent method.

Tangent point -apex point x distance divided by slope- handicap is a 3 putt

The bottom line is that most people are not going to putt at the speed needed to have the ball drop in the hole going precisely down the line on a breaking putt. If you do and you miss, the ball will go well past the hole leaving you with a difficult second putt. The preferred method is to lag that puppy with an option to drop on the high side. The slower the roll as it gets to the cup, the more it will break at the end. Since aim point, plumb bob, however you determine amount of slope is a guessing game when playing, just add extra to your guess and putt it with the expectation of it dying right near the hole at the end. Pretty simple that since 95% of people putting misread a slope, or break, on the low side, start your aim line when you stroke it with more break than you eyeballed. Doesn't have to be a ton, but if you go between 1 and 3 balls more and control your speed, you are going to like the results.

You don’t have to putt at a speed that drops the ball precisely down the line. The hole is large enough and the human good enough to control the pace within 1-4 rps (Revolution per second) that allows for variance and maintains the best allowable capture speed by the hole. 1-4” rps will leave the ball within 21” of the hole in the event it does miss, and hardly considered ‘well past’ or a ‘difficult second putt’. Aiming is not a guessing game, as many are lead to believe, but a developable skill. One part of that skill we demonstrated in this video. Simply adding a guess on top of a guess will yield limited skill development and/or thus learning which will not equate to more putts made.

So how about explaining the tangent point …simply ! I have no idea and I’m not dumb. 😮

That’s why we illustrated it in the video.

no idea what the tangent means, but if I understand the concept correctly: the apex is the highest point of the curved line to the hole but as it's a curve we have to aim higher than the original apex because gravity will pull the ball lower before it gets there Makes sense in my head but it's not easy to write down - good luck

(Larry/San Diego) recently came across your excellent putting video on putting to the tangent line vs the apex point. Would this technique/ method be used on all breaking putts regardless o length? I am now a subscriber and will review your other content.

Welcome and thanks for watching. The answer is yes it will be used on any breaking putt.

I use the "plumb bob" method to determine the break and aiming point for a putt. Does the aiming point that I get equate to the Apex or to the tangent line? If the Plumb Bob gives me the Apex, is determining the Tangent line primarily a visual reading of the green between the Apex point and the Tangent line? I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

Plumb bobbing can give a sense of slope but almost nothing to do with break and definitely doesn’t help find the tangent. For example, plumb bobbing will not allow you to see the maximum break with the slowest speed or the minimum break with the fastest speed. Only an idea of slope, which your instincts will have already given you and more of a confirmation than anything else. Not saying don’t use it. For finding true vertical it can be very useful.

How is the Apex determined? If the apex is simply determined by the golfers "read" or visualization of the ball's path to the hole and the farthest point from a straight line to the hole, the tangent line seems to represent simply that the golfer needs to be aware that any intermediate break in the ball's path to the apex needs to be considered when he selects his starting line. I am correct about this?

Apex is determined by the golfers instinct to control speed at a rate that would allow the putt the largest chance to enter the hole, and if missed would not travel beyond 21” from the hole. This would equal 1-4 rps (revolutions per second) and most anyone walking the planet has this type of control, even if they don’t realize it. Why is that important? Because the determination of the Apex is dependent upon different things; percentage of slope, green speed, predicted ball speed, etc. and the instinct is developed by the brains ability to factor in all these things based not only off physics but the neuroscience of brain to target relationships. The Tangent Line becomes the ‘straight putt’ and lends itself to the thinking all putts are straight, at least from a direction and straight off the putter face view. To keep it extremely simple, your interpretation is correct. Hopefully this helps you to make more putts more often as well as give a better understanding of why the Apex is not where the golfer should aim the putter face.

The apex is simply incorrect on the first putt. I’m sorry but I don’t see the value.
