In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shows his favorite tricks to
bring back massive punch in kicks and impact instruments. Watch as he uses his
custom settings to achieve the right amount of punch! Follow along with the multitracks
of the song “Due Correnti” by the Italian artist, Katres.
Marc Daniel Nelson is a Grammy and French Academy Award nominated mixing engineer,
music producer and creative director. He has been mixing, producing and managing creative
content for over 20 years.
His Music Credits include Fleetwood Mac, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz, Eric Burdon /
Ben Harper, Francesca Battistelli, Robert Duvall, Ozomotli, Reik and more. As
Protégé for both legendary producer / engineer Bill Schnee and Ken Caillat, Marc has
carried the torch for impeccable quality sound and production.
His film credits include Solo, Blade Runner 2049, The Vietnam War, Mulan, The
Expanse, Wild Horses, Point Break, No Manches Frida, Fractured, Amanda,
Father Figures, Ya, Ty, Vin, Vona and more.
His creative management credits include executive producing the 13 episode PBS television
series, creating and executive producing the national video campaign for Guitar Center and
creative directing for Alcon Sleeping Giant, ArtistMax and Warner Chappell PM.

My kicks have super short decay times, so a tiny bit of limiting is not a problem : )

If I’m mixing live drums that I’ve engineered I’ve had a lot of success with double-micing the kick - one inside offset from the beater (an audix drum mic or something like that for high-end information) and one just on the outside (away from the hole, a rode nt1 will suffice). Hipass the inside mic track, low pass the outside mic track - blend to taste.

I often use the Curves feature in Trigger to remove/control the transient of a supportive extra kick and roll the sample in rather than layer up transients.

This is not putting punch back in to the kicks... - This is putting LIFE back to OUR MUSIC !!!! Marc had always been a remarkable personality delving into the depths of these nuances we never even thought existed. Always Clear/Concise explanations.. Love this video - this is the kind of detail work that really makes a difference towards the end of a mix. I was doing something similar today with a live kit recording that just wouldn't bend and so needed massaging into shape instead.

Wow, Marc took a kick that sounded like the top end was created by capturing the sound of a loose ground wire clicking while shorting. What a remarkable recovery! I had no idea one could get that surgical to fix such a huge problem! Thanks, I will never look at tracks like that the same again!

Been looking for a decent clipper, this one is really cheap too! Had a play with it and it seems a great tool. Great advice too, Marc never fails!

not cheap for a clipper. They are all around 18 to 25, or free. This is the best, most analytical one. Eventide Saturate on sale for 25 also right now.

Bonzo's kick has a ton of mids. Many rock kicks are cut in this area, but JBs was heavy on 1k. Try boosting in this region. Also look for a kick sound which doesn't have scooped mids, maybe something not miked with a Beta52 haha

Interesting, nice tutorial! I also like standardclip above all others. It is so versatile and has super high-quality filters and super high-quality oversampling. I use it in my mastering chain often before a limiter, as in this example for exactly the same reason: you reduce the crest factor before the limiter so you can allow it to work less and thus it won't squash the "umph" of the important transients.

Another fantastic video Marc and Warren. Great way to get punch. I especially like the idea of taming the transient on the sample to only provide body. Also, I really like the dog cam (name?) to help analyze with my ears rather than my eyes.
