I bought this fountain years ago. My cats LUV it. Today was the first time that I took it apart to clean. I am not good at disassembling and reassembling. I looked at many tutorials that did not provide enough info for me (having limited knowledge). Thanks to your video, I was able to clean thoroughly. Thank you for the supplemental video about adding water. Your video was detailed and easy to follow.
I just received this fountain from a friend who didn't like the noise it made. I had to use it a few days without the filter and I didn't mind the little noise it made whatsoever. Then when I ordered the filters and realized I had no idea where it went and your video helped me so much. Thank you, for your informative video.

One correction to this cleaning video: You must also take the front grill/handle thing off of the pump (be careful as it can break easily). You must then also remove the small cover over the pump's impeller (it just slides off with a butter knife) and clean the cover and the pump impeller as it will get just as clogged as the other grates. In fact, cleaning this will restore pump pressure more than anything else.
For those who came here like me, to check the position of carbon filter :D You should also remove the propeller from time to time as it is only held by magnet. When I took mine out after 2 years of proper cleaning I was in shock. Don't be afraid to pull it out, it won't break, you can also shake the pump and it will fall out, just make sure to secure it to not fall on the floor. And the clogging inside the propeller chamber is also slowing it down. Cheers

Fixed our 5 litre Platinum Drinkwell fountain saved $$$ on replacement of plug & motor by trying 1 suggested solution (owned for over 2 years now - motor stopped out of the blue;) after testing plug in a another power point still not working. Took out the pump pulled apart soaked in soapy water for 15 minutes, then rinsed in vinegar & water. Put back together tested and now working. Thank you to whoever suggested

I already have the porcelain one, so I am somewhat familiar with the product, but I have never seen particular one before. I really needed a step-by-step guide and you surely went above and beyond that right here. I have two cats in the house so water is pretty important! I purchased one last night, looks like a great idea and a very good review and cleaning instruction here! Her name is Nissa and about six months old now, she loves playing in the kitchen sink but this is a better idea.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's appreciated. Just FYI... There is an opening on the back bottom of the bowl to allow the cord to go through so it can be tucked away in back of the fountain.

The motor can be easily taken apart and then the impeller and orifices can be cleaned using brushes and hot soapy water, followed by a thorough rinse. Bacteria will build up there if you don't do this. The instruction manual tells you how to do this.

You know I have the mini fountain but the motor is about the same. I have tried and tried and I see no way to take it apart so that I can remove the white propeller. Please help!!
thank you for this video! my Zazzy refuses to drink from a dish, preferring instead to drink from the tap. Hi, thanks for the video. I thought I'd share my experience for anyone considering buying one of these pet fountains. I had the same model seen in this video and used it for several years and the cats seemed to enjoy it as well. However, with the cleaning frequency required (every 1-2 weeks), it seemed to me that quite a bit of water was being wasted. I realize now that I could have dumped it outside on a plant or lawn. Also, with a busy schedule, cleaning it became a hassle. There are many crevices that can get gunky. It was such a pain. And yes, I had the same cleaning kit as well. It just takes time to get into those crevices if you're being thorough.I am now considering getting the Pioneer Pet Stainless Steel Raindrop Design fountain from Amazon. It's smaller and appears much, much easier to clean.

Thanks for such a great video. My original Drinkwell fountain has developed a small leak around the motor (which is SUCH a pain to remove for cleaning, btw). I'm definitely getting this one for my furry children. The hair catch alone sold me, since I have a kitty that likes to clean his paws in his water bowl.
I had one of these for many years and it worked well. It is a pain to clean though, it has too many nooks and corners and hard to reach surfaces. I recommend the simpler, more bowl-shaped ones that are much easier to keep clean. Also if you leave this one in sunlight the clear reservoir will allow the water to turn green!
We clean out the Platinum once every month or so - about the same time as we change out the filter. We also clean-out the pre-hair trap twice a month (which is an easy pull out and quick rinse). And we have 3 kitties. :)
You must clean the interior part of the motor or gunk will build up inside and flow into the water. I do it every other cleaning. The motor has 4 parts (check online for a video on how to take apart and clean). It is EASY to take apart, clean and reassemble!
Yes, I have to admit - it really does help catch a lot of the fur...especially when you have one cat who likes to clean her paws in the fountain! =^..^=
There’s a much much better way of buying filters than directly through the manufacturer. You just have to keep looking. There’s no way I would pay $15 for three filters. I go through filters every two weeks just FYI, and thank you for the video.
Hi, I like your video, very detailed and smooth talking without a kagillion "umms" like most. I do have one piece of advice/observation: telling people the product is quiet is great to hear but isn't enough, stop talking long enough for us to hear it for ourselves, maybe 5 seconds, would be great!
You actually hear it (I have one myself) the motor a little bit when everything IS quiet, but only when you're close to it. Any other noises cover it easily.
I'm so glad you like the reviews! :) And, I'll be honest in saying that if your kitty is prone to acne then this may not be the best fountain depending on how they drink. If they drink from the water spout then it's unlikely their skin will rub against the plastic - but if they drink from the bowl part, then it's possible that it could irritate them. The alternative would be either stainless steel or ceramic. We have 3 kitties & they all prefer this fountain to the stainless steel 360 fountain.
Very true! However, a lot of kitties love fresh flowing water (as seen by how many of them will try to get water from a sink faucet). Having a fountain encourages kitties to drink more often by having it constantly moving instead of staying stagnant as it would in a regular bowl. Thank you for your comment! =^..^=
@blonzo Hi there! We have had this model for over 2 years now. Still works great. Placing the reservoir back into the fountain is no problem at all. There may be a drip or 2 from flipping it over once it's filled with water and putting it back into place, but have never had it spill all over unless the top wasn't twisted properly on. And, we (Puutty Power!) are a online retailer...so the only connection we have with the manufacturer is that we sell this product from their line.
Ma'm very good review but you may want to either go back to the manuel or google it but the pump can be dis assembled and cleaned. Very vital to its longevity.
Thanks for your comment Ryan! Yes, I discovered that shortly after this video review that we did several years ago! Disassembling the pump is definitely something that owners of the fountain should do to help even further remove extra fur and hair. :)

I am about to replace the regular Drinkwell fountain. The motor was always a little loud, but in recent months got so noisy that we can't hear the tv in the next room! How long have you had this model? Also, many reviews mention difficulty replacing the reservoir in the platinum model because it doesn't stand up and when you tilt to replace it, it can spill all over. This step I was most interested in viewing, but you skipped it. How are you connected to the manufacturer?
How do you clean the water reservoir beside the big round hole. It is impossible to reach with the brush or sponge, not even the corners. Algae deposits (green) are there even though I clean it every week. Can you put any product that wont harm your cat?
Are you serious??? The most important part of cleaning this device - the pump disassembly, is left out! We watch her clean and scrub and plug into the wall very carefully! We do that every day already.
i have a Petmate fountain and filters are getting hard to find i can get them online. but i think i like this one better i bought a new fountain from Petsmart it is their brand Whisker City.
Hello, I just ordered mine and received it today but the water doesn't come from the top, it's just running from the bottom. Please help me what should I do?
For some reason, our drinkwell is leaking. We have our drinkwell setting in a 12” x 24” plastic cookie sheet because it leaks. There are times it goes for months without leaking, then it leaks again to the point it half fills the cookie sheet. I have looked for hairline breaks, etc and just can’t figure this out. Any thoughts? We have 3 small dogs that use this fountain. Thank you...
Instruction added to the fountain says to open the pump and clean it inside. This really isn't easy... I managed to do it (and I'm glad I did - a lot of slippery stuff inside it) but I'm not happy there is no tool to do it (or it is not easier) - not everyone has that strong nails.
+witoldyna m. Excellent comment - thank you adding it! You are right, it can be difficult. I have two fountains - one pump is easy to pop off the exterior and the other is not. Just have to remember that it is supposed to come apart and not be afraid of using a little force to do so.=^..^=

I have to be honest. As I'm looking at this, 75% of it was much like the last video that I saw. It's all about disassembling and cleanings. It doesn't review anything about it's working, problems you may run into, how long does the whole thing last. As a pet owner with more than a couple of cats, I'd like to know about any problems that could be encountered. What I have from this is how to give it a thorough cleaning.
I have the same one and when I filled up the reservoir with water and plugged it in the water completely disappeared from the reservoir, but the water was still flowing. Is that normal? Have you experienced that with yours? Please let me know.
Apple_SuperDragon-Geek1994 Yes! That is normal. You will end up needing to fill up the reservoir twice in the beginning. The water disappears when you turn the fountain on because the pump is pushing all the water up to the spout that flows out. Just refill the reservoir as you don't want to burn out the motor for the pump. I hope your kitties like it! =^..^=
Put the fountain where it's supposed to be, so you won't have to move it after it's filled, for it's quite heavy, and it'll keep you from spilling any. You actually poor fresh water into the base up 'till about half an inch of the rim. Then, you completely fill the transparent reservoir, which once you've put the cap on, you quickly turn upside down. The cap keeps the water from leaking. Slide the reservoir into place. Hello! Thank you for your comment! I would recommend changing out the water before it gets too low in the back reservoir. Depending on how much your cat(s) drink - this could be every several days to a week. Also, I would recommend cleaning the entire fountain out every 1-2 weeks so that way no bacteria or residue builds up in the fountain. We leave our fountain running 24/7 and only stop it when we clean. =^..^=
Lea williams Yes! Although they will need to bend down to drink it. It is definitely large enough. I think Drinkwell also makes an outdoor dog fountain as well. We only sell the Platinum on www.PuuttyPower.com! =^..^=
Great question! Yes, it is safe to keep running 24/7. It's just a low voltage pump that circulates the water. We have had ours for several years and have never had a problem. Just make sure to hide the wire in case your kitty is a "chewer"! =^..^=
Wxteo Great question! The water continually cycles though once it is filled. It will not continue to fill up or spill over the edges. The way the fountain and reservoir portion is designed, it only lets out water as water is lost (either by drinking of evaporation) to keep the water at the same level.
