Here’s an amazing trick to easily remove broken PVC pipe nipples (threaded), or glued pipe segments, allowing you to re-use the fittings.
All you need is a propane torch or electric heat gun, and a piece of round scrap metal.
Here's a playlist of all of my helpful plumbing tips!

I had to let the hot metal sit longer and use a long but small head flat point screwdriver at angle to lever out the broken piece. I was ecstatic this worked. It saved me time and money. Thanks for passing it on.

Thanks for the tip! I knew heat would help, but didn’t think to use rebar to transfer the heat….only had a few inches to work with from the wall. Worked like a charm!

Thank you. I have same problem. I considered heat but didn't know how to isolate the inner pipe. A very helpful tip.

Very helpful. My pipe extruder tool was not working on the broken nipple, so I used your heating method and was able to get the stub out. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for making this video. Saved my day and a lot of extra work. Use this method and the removal tool and worked like a charm. It took a few tries to get it flexible enough to remove, just needed to heat for longer and leave in longer. Mine was in a below grade irrigation access, so was not looking forward to digging out and completely redoing it. All the extra work is now avoided.

The heating method didn’t work as easily as it did for you because my pipe was much larger, but it got heated enough that I was able to chip away at one part enough so it broke & then I was able to peel away the rest of the stuck pvc pipe because the heat loosened the stuck part. So thank you for this great tip!!

Great, thanks for letting me know! I just used this trick again the other day in the bottom of a super heavy ice machine. I could only access it from under the machine, only about 3-4” of clearance from the ground. I cut off a short length of steel round rod, and held it with pliers while I heated it and then held it in position within the broken PVC nipple threads that were stuck. There was no room to even attempt to use a T-handle type removal tool. Worked like a charm, and in a matter of minutes I had the broken nipple out and was ready to install new drain parts! 👍

I have the same problem. How high did you heat your iron pipe? I don't have any iron pipe but I plan to use a piece of copper pipe. Thanks.
@TomWylie
@TomWylie 2 года назад
I didn’t check the temperature, but I heated it until it was just barely starting to turn red. I would guess that using a piece of copper you might need to hold it inside the plastic longer, and maybe reheat the copper a couple times. A thin copper pipe won’t hold the heat as long as the iron rod did. Good luck!

How can i do for a 2 inch pipe...?
@TomWylie
@TomWylie 2 месяца назад
I’ve seen people put some fresh extra PVC cement inside the pipe section being removed, and light it on fire. 🔥When the pipe was soft enough from the heat, use pliers to remove the soft pipe section. Seems a bit risky but it worked for them. If you wanted to try the more conservative method I showed in the video, I would use a piece of larger steel pipe that is just smaller than the ID of the piece you’re removing, and heat it red hot. Might need to repeat a few times to get the plastic pipe piece soft enough. Hope you get it done smoothly!

Ok but a little too much gabbing. Just do the job w/o so much ad lib.
