Main reason I didn't modify backband in past was rumor of possible damage to boat by placing sideways pressure on seat bolt holes. I asked Josh at Pyranha, and here is his reply:
As far as that technique of backband retention goes, I don't think the webbing would be putting too much pressure on the bolts, we actually used to have a metal clip that attached there for the exact same purpose on some of our older outfitting at one point. Personally I am a fan of using webbing like this for a backband retainer as it's much more comfortable on the shoulder when carrying than the old metal pieces I just mentioned, and also easily replaceable and serviceable with stuff I generally have around the garage or in the back of my car. If you like the way it sets the backrest, I say go for it.
Hope this helps,
-Josh

Kevin - brilliant walkthrough & thanks for making the time to dial that in. Curious about the back-band hack - in your experience, would it make sense to just press grommets into those holes to minimize wear on the webbing, or would that be a non issue? Cheers !
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 2 года назад
Thanks! I'm sure grommets wouldn't hurt, and I've thought about the wear issue myself, but people I know who have used this setup for years have never reported any issues. Maybe I'll take mine apart in 4-6 months, just to see if the hole punched into the webbing is showing any signs of stretching out or fraying. Should be very easy to tell since they started the exact same size as the bolts. You would also want the grommet to be very thin, since I think it's a good idea to minimize the boat/seat separation as much as possible, and the folded over webbing already creates a decent gap.

Just got a Medium Scorch 2022 yesterday. Coming from a Jackson Zen 2. What size skirt do I need. My Zen is 2.5 inches shorter in cockpit size. Awesome video. Thanks.

The biggest you can find, haha! Seriously though, you will definitely want an XL for the Scorch. Pyranha made the cockpit ridiculously large imo. If you want a rand I’d suggest XXL. My XL Royale will fit but it’s difficult even when warm and basically impossible if it’s cold out. IR told me they are considering making all their models (currently it’s just some of them) in XXL bc of Pyranha cockpit sizes. They said it’s technically an XL, but barely.

I'm sort of annoyed that my roll practice instructor acted like I was the problem, not the back rest. I tried the scorch for the first time and immediately noticed discomfort from having no back support. The instructor said it was up to me to keep myself upright and I shouldn't be relying on the back rest. But that didn't make sense to me. I have very unflexible legs... sitting in that position makes me want to lay down, I can't force myself to stay upright without help. anyway... that was just annoying. I come here to find out that it wasn't me, it WAS the back rest!! sheesh

It is true that you want to engage your core, but your backband should help out imo. I’ve heard people talk about paddling w a loose backband, but most people I know prefer one that is supportive. The Gnarvana is very supportive and Wakas are too. Good luck w your roll practice!

@@kevinhill.8 I'm probably getting a scorch, and if so I'm going to have a friend's brother do the back rest hack to make it more supportive. He had to do the hack himself on his own scorch, lol.

Circling back to this for another question Kevin, are those the watershed futa float bags? Are they only one size? Are they difficult to fit in the scorch stern? Sorry more like 3 questions but gonna be doing some overnighters and I need to gear up and need some beta for packing up my scorch.
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 Год назад
No problem. Yes, Yes, Depends 😁 I’ve actually started using NRS Stow Floats instead of my Futas for most trips. They aren’t nearly as burly, but they are much lighter (a full pound less, each!) and easier to get in and out bc they’re more flexible and slick. Unless you are tossing the bags in and out of trucks (think international travel), they are plenty strong if you take care of them. Futas can be harder to get in the stern, but it does depend a lot on how you pack them. And be sure to remove the backstrap on your scorch so that you can get the seat all the way out of the way. I’m actually working on a self-support packing video now. Wish I had it done for you. It’s all filmed, just need to edit it. Soon🤞🏼

@@kevinhill.8 I got plenty of time bro so no worries, just planning ahead. I’ll be on the lookout for that video and thanks for the recommendation on the bags, oh and as far as my purchase decisions we spoke of before between the code, gnar and scorch, as you can tell from this message I ended up with the scorch and have ZERO complaints, absolutely love the boat. Hey Kevin, did you have an updated OWR on the small vs med? Im similar size little shorter 5'9.5 31" inseam 145lbs. I was sofar able to demo the small and med, but only at class II park n play. Im only intermediate III+ Both seemed to fit, the Med def needs seat moved up and outfitted +hookers. The small felt little more comfortable and maneuverable. Im east coast, (DC area) looking for a boat to be my entry to creeking and class IV. Thanks

I have actually never paddled my wife’s small, and have since sold my medium. She’s probably selling her small, and I may or may not paddle it before she does. Tbh, I’m not super interested in it. I can tell just by sitting in it that it’s a true small, and if I want to spice things up I’d rather take my M Antix 2.0, or my S Ripper 2. That said, I probably should take it out just to see what it’s like, and maybe post some content. As far as S vs M Scorch for you, I’d prob recommend the M, esp since you are developing skills and looking to push into harder stuff. As you said, you would need to do some outfitting to make it work. Definitely add hookers, but be careful ab moving seat too far forward; consider adding more foot foam instead. Also, have you considered a Gnar? I was in a M Gnar, and now a S, and it’s amazing! The small runs big too, so for ppl like us who are between S and M in most boats, it’s perfection. It’s also not as edgy as Scorch (but def way more than Code), which seems like it would be good for E Coast boating w all your rocks. I have some videos discussing it vs the Scorch (and more on the way), so check them out and keep an eye out for upcoming content. 🔔

@@kevinhill.8 Kevin, thanks for reply! I need to try the Gnar in proper env. I tried a small (yes big small) (and a sm Code) at just class2. But will ALL the bow rocker and softer edge, I found simple ferry harder than the scorch, or for that matter my greenboat ferries better.
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 Год назад
@@kevinuher3415 makes sense. Code and Gnar are definitely more nimble than either Scorch or Greenboat, so they won’t hold ferry line as easily. But they excel in other areas, and that nimbleness can come in very handy too. I have one buddy who’s into a Gnar from a Code, and he loves how much more the Gnar holds a line. And another buddy who’s into Gnar from a Scorch loves how nimble Gnar is. He talks ab how the Scorch is faster, but can have a mind of its own if you aren’t careful (can hold line a little too well). But it’s all ab finding what works for you. 👍🏼

Bro, can you explain what foam you used for your heel block and the adhesive as well as the extra padding under your thigh hooks?
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 Год назад
For the knee block (under the hookers), I cut from a block of mini cell foam. I glued it on top of the thin knee foam pad that Pyranha provides. That way if you want to get it off, it’s a little bit easier than if it’s glued to the boat itself. I use H2 glue which is available from NRS. Might be able to find minicell foam at your local gear shop or here’s the link where you can get it at NRS. www.nrs.com/minicell-foam/ps8a For the heel block are used sticky back half inch foam that I got from NRS. I don’t think they sell it anymore but they do sell a very similar product made by padz. www.nrs.com/padz-canoe-flat-knee-pads/p7p9

@@kevinhill.8 thanks man, after much debate, I decided to buy the scorch, I figured that with the aggressive rails that I have on my antix that it would be a good switch instead of having something with softer rails like the code. At the end, it came down to a few factors that had me deciding between the gnar and the scorch. I know they both have great primary and secondary stability but I’ve paddled the large scorch, which was my buddies, and it was obviously too big for me, however, it rolled super easy, and I loved that, I know that the rails are sharper, but I figure, since I’m already used to somewhat aggressive rails That I should be OK in the scorch. I know that I can’t go wrong with either boat, but I also know that the rails on the scorch will ultimately make me a better peddler… Hopefully lol. Anyway, that’s my logic determined on all the online reviews seeing as to I can’t really demo any of the ones that I’ve been trying to decide between.

@@followingrj sweet. Way to do your research! I think you’ll love it, and and I’m sure you will at least like it. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out if the boat is really for you, and if not you can always sell it and move to something else. Sometimes that’s just how it goes.

Kevin, How do you think I'll float a Large at 230 naked? It would put me on the heavy side with all my gear, no? I'm trying to decide between the Ripper 2, the Scorch, and the Machno.
@kevinhill.8
@kevinhill.8 2 года назад
Good question. First, the recommended weight range is always just your weight, not your gear. Manufacturers assume everyone's gear weighs about the same, so the listed number is your dry/naked weight. I think you would be ok w a Lg Scorch. The L Scorch range is 175-255, with a center (mid-point) of 215, so you aren't really that high into the top half of the range. The L Machno definitely has a higher range (165-287 with a mid of 226), so I'd go that way if want a more forgiving ride - the extra volume and soft edges will make it a very different, and more forgiving, ride vs the Scorch. Not sure what to tell you about the Ripper 2. It's range is 175-275 (225 mid), so closer to the Machno, but it's a really different boat vs the other two. If you want a half-slice, maybe it's the way to go (I'd suggest checking out the L Antix 2.0 as well), but it's not really in the same category (creek boat) as the other two. Hope that helps!
