Nature - Wild Life - Insect Life - Pyrrhidium Sanguineum is a longhorn beetle.
It is polyphagous on deciduous trees but it strongly prefers oak. The beetles are 8 to 15 millimeters long. They occur from April to June in large parts of Europe, in North Africa, Asia Minor and the Middle East in oak and deciduous forests, gardens and also near lumber camps. The beetles often hatch from firewood in winter when it is stored in warm rooms for several days. However, this beetle poses no danger to wood used in buildings because it is too dry. The eggs are laid in the cracks of dry semi-strong oak branches or other deciduous trees (common beeches, hornbeams, elms or fruit trees). The larvae initially develop under the bark and then penetrate three to six centimeters deep into the wood, where they pupate after one to two years. The adults live in the trees. The antennae of the males are body-long, whereas the antennae of the females are half as long. However, the females are significantly larger than the males, which is why they have antennae of approximately the same length. In my video can be seen how the female lays her eggs in the bark of the fallen tree.
