As an Aussie handler, I would first recommend going to a breeder who has produced some service dogs in their lines, go to a show breeder, they tend to breed calmer dogs. Also keep in mind, the are HIGH entertainment, even for me, my boy has to go walking around 30 minutes before going anywhere, he’s pretty calm. Herding breeds are also very prone to being reactive and pick up on your anxiety. Finding a good Aussie prospect is hard. Going for a lab would be ideal. But an Aussie would be great too! Just think about your PA, my boy is a blue Merle so ppl always want to talk to me about it. Labs, ppl don’t care lol.

Note that Labs aren't entirely calmer, there's tons of higher energy labs and some are goofy like goldens, the bottom line is any bored dog will be an overly energetic dog, vs a tired and well exercised and stimulated dog. To add, if you're unfamiliar with herding breeds or are a first time dog owner i'd reach out to handlers,breeders, and owners of said breed and talk to them about their experiences. If you go with a herding breed be prepared to have to offer them a LOT of enrichment for the time you can't spend outdoors with them and consider having a sport or activity set up for them they can do at least once a week or every other day. (Like hiking, long walks, bikejoring, fetch, agility, AKC tricks, nosework, etc) I plan to get a rough/smooth collie in the future, and with herding breeds it certianly makes a difference what breeder you go with, as some opt for making the breed better and some are more for profit. CERTAINLY find someone who will let you potentially meet any litters/will help you make a choice. And if possible, discuss this with a trainer you may want to work with for your prospect. R/servicedogs or r/dogs can help you find out more about if it's a good fit along with breeders.
