Both Mennonites and Quakers are still very much involved in emergency rescue, Red Cross type activities. I am Lutheran and we have the Lutheran Disaster Response organization and we are encouraged to give money to it either personally or as congregations.

Years ago I became disabled and when I got to the point that i could no longer do the basic housework and finding that most cleaners refuse to do dishes, I was able to hire a Mennonite girl whose mother came with her for an interview. I think I was being interviewed more than the other way around! Once Mom was satisfied that I was a Christian and there would be no drinking, smoking, foul language etc. Her daughter came to work for me, I am now on my third cleaner as when they can no longer do it, THEY find someone to help me from their community. My current lady has been with me for 5-6 years now. We have become good friends. I appreciate her and her family so much. I make quilts and she knows it so when I told her how much I admired the fabric in a new dress, she brought me some of the scraps to use. God blessed me so much with this woman. I don't know what I would do without her or her community that come and Christmas carol at our home as I can no longer get out to church. While I have no problem wearing shorts or whatever at home, if I know one of the men from her family has to come over for whatever reason, I change into something more modest, which is how I generally dress. I have never figured out how a woman wearing a mini skirt/dress can stand sitting on a chair with no fabric in between her bottom and the chair, and I sure don't want to sit where she has been. Very nice blog.

I’m glad that you said, “I choose to”. I choose to keep the sabbath, I choose to dress modestly, etc. When you were talking about carefully following the Bible scriptures, I was reminded of a quote that I keep on my refrigerator: “There is a careful way and a casual way to live the gospel. Exactly. Like Yeshua/Jesus said “if you love me, keep the commandments.” I find the sabbath a blessing, I plan my week for it. I keep the holy days because I see them as a wedding rehearsal for the bride of Christ. I keep the dietary laws because I am a temple of Holy Spirit, and to remind me how important it is to be care what is allowed in my temple. Modesty should remind us of Christ (hence Adam and Eve’s clothes being the first burnt offering). I love my tunic instead of pants, needed something to go with my tallit. I see headcovering as a crown for a daughter of the King of the Universe, a physical symbol of a spiritual protection, hence why the wife suspected of adultery had to remove Her covering during the adultery test in Numbers 5:18.

You are fine. One thing about you , you come across honest and kind. I do however think men should wear pants or jeans rather than shorts because women aren’t the only ones that should be modest .
@theMennoniteMom
@theMennoniteMom 4 года назад
yes, I agree with you. In our specific church, men don't wear shorts unless it's swimming or such an activity. And we women would also were long shorts or skorts for such things. (I don't on youtube). However, in other churches where women wear skirts and blouse (often knee length skirts) then you'll see the men wearing shorts. So, it kind of goes hand in hand. Women that wear longer skirts, the men will usually wear long pants.
@elic903

I also agree. I wondered why that was too. We are holiness and we believe in modesty in both men and women. Our women wear dresses and skirts and our the men wear pants. I always wondered why I would see some mennonite men wearing shorts and even sleeveless shirts. Anyways I enjoy the channel. Thanks for sharing! And keep being a witness for the Lord! By the way, i totally agree with that you can spot other modest families while in stores or in other places. Thanks for your explanations.

@Michele Mcmillian You are so right......The only body I want to see is my husbands, and he is the only one to see mine...or part of it.... I am not a "run around the house naked" kind of woman...i am very modest, even around my husband. I love maxi dresses with a little shirt over it.....I never wear tight clothes, no cleavage showing, my husband always wears a shirt and pants. He doesn't like shorts and he will not go without a shirt, except in the house with only me. I wish we would see a lot more women and men, dressing modestly.

A healthy life does mean controlling your weight - but a better guide to health then simply measuring BMI is that a woman's waist should be less than 30 inches and a man's less than 40 inches. Any more than that denotes fat gain around the middle of the trunk which is the most dangerous for us.

@@kassrripples3659 yup - your Liver will struggle if you put on a lot of weight around your middle (Non alcoholic fatty liver disease). But what I was saying was that weight isn't just what to look at - my husband has a 'big frame' as he's 6'3" and has size 12 (UK) feet so has always weighed a lot. But when his waist measurement crept over 40" he had some beginnings of liver fibrosis. Another blessings I have found in wearing dresses only? I make my own, all from the same pattern. I have 6 “cool weather” dresses and 6 “ warm weather” dresses. That’s it! Talk about a simple wardrobe. I love the freedom now in not having a myriad of decisions to make about what to wear each day. When one of my newer dresses starts wearing out, it goes into the everyday selection that I wear at home and I make another to replace it for going out of the house. The old dress becomes rags or quilt pieces. I appreciate your candor in explaining this subject. Blessings, Betsy

I agree with you. Clothes shopping for women can be a nightmare. We have very little choice, because necklines are low on almost all the garments. Then we struggle with a fabric being so thin that they are almost see through. Women have to end up wearing another undergarments underneath a top to be able to stay modest. Dresses and skirts in the stores are made very short. It can be totally frustrating to find clothing that is even reasonably modest.

I appreciate you explaining the topic of modest dress. I know it can be a hard topic to address while not seeming to be judgemental. I am independent fundamental Baptist. We have always been taught modesty and I dress in a distinctive feminine and modest manner. When explaining my convictions I have been viewed as prideful which I am not. I hope everyone understands that someone can have these convictions while still loving and respecting others who may disagree. In the end we will answer to God for our own actions. So I will be kind and respectful to others who will believe differently than me. And I hope that everyone will show you the same respect to you for explaining and answering that question. I & my husband joined a mennonite church in our late 20s. (neither of us were raised that way) At first I HATED the dresses. I was already dressing modestly and wearing a covering.. I didn't feel I needed to change that. But the longer we've been in the church, the more I've realized there is a bit of "unity in spirit", for lack of a better term, for the women in it. It's also so freeing to know I can pick fabrics I love & sew a dress that will fit perfect in only 2 hours or so. You are right about being able to spot a mennonite man, or even a mennonite youth young man. There are little differences that stand out loudly to us, but not really much in society. Also, I'm thankful I don't have to sew pants for my guys!! I think you did a beautiful job explaining the differences! You're heartfelt sincerity was very touching.

This is so interesting! My sister-in-law chose to join the local traditional Mennonite community (in BC, Canada) after attending a traditional Mennonite elementary school, and her community is much more conservative than your community seems to be, but much less than other communities. She can have coloured and patterned dresses, unlike many other communities, but her husband would never wear “trendy” or fitted jeans or tshirts. In their community the men wear store bought jeans and pants, but home sewn, long sleeve, button up shirts. It is interesting to see the many many levels of modesty!

I had two auto-immune problems after the birth of my daughter, hyper-thyroidism and irritable bowel syndrome. The irritable bowel syndrome was so painful and I wasn’t absorbing nutrients very well. Now that I am in menopause, it only tears it’s ugly head occasionally. The hyper-thyroid caused infertility issues. I got pregnant about 2 1/2 years after her birth, but miscarried at the beginning of my 3rd month. I got pregnant a while later and had a baby boy. My daughter is 4 1/2 years older than my son. After his birth, my hyper-thyroid got even more hyper!! My hair fell out and I lost a lot of weight. I never was able to get pregnant again. I know that your son is a tender mercy and a blessing from God. I came from a big family and I am a member of a church that traditionally has large families. It is hard sometimes to answer questions from family and friends, as to why you don’t have more children. But the Lord blesses us in other ways. In my view women stand out and dress more modest because they have never been able to adress their sexuality as man have. Historically and to an extend today their value is created by their virginity or if married the amount of children. In absolute contrast the womans worth in the mainstreem society is also often created by her beauty and how much she shows. What a double standrad!! We should just simly look much more at peoples hearts, compassion and actions! Regardless of dressing.

Appreciate u addressing this hard topic. I dress as u do and appreciate it very much. Men can stay "separated" and "modest" by not following fads and wearing tight pants and shirts; and be modest by having sleeves on shirts,not wearing splashy t-shirts etc...all in all we do what we do because if Who we belong to and represent 💙. You did a great job explaining why you dress the way you do. I appreciated your comment that there are many ways to dress modestly. I’m Mennonite, but I don’t wear dresses usually. I’m most comfortable when I’m wearing loose-fitting clothing that covers my legs and shoulders, etc.. For me, that can mean loose-fitting sweatpants and tee shirts. Luckily, I rarely need to dress up more than that. 😄

I love the way you dress! I think it's beautifully modest and feminine. It also must be so nice to have a complete outfit with one piece of clothing! I used to love wearing dresses when I was a child, but I grew out of it by around 2nd grade. Now I feel out of place wearing skirts and dresses, and like you said, it can be hard to find store bought pieces that aren't spaghetti straps and so on. (And chub rub on the thighs, ouch - but that is something that needs to be addressed health wise). I also have issues with standing out in public. I have always wanted to blend in and it is much harder when one dresses so differently than the norm. I do understand also that it can be good to stand out as a Christian and can open up dialogue with others about Jesus. I am still shakey in my beliefs as I grew up without religion and do not always feel deserving of His love. I avoid low cut shirts and never show my knees in public. Thank you for all your wonderful videos :)

On the subject of something to wear under a skirt or dress, I wear something called a slip short. I got them at Walmart. They are Vanity Fair brand and they had them in 2 different styles, the spandex type or a thinner, more silky type. If they don't have them in the store, you can get them online, which I did for a few more pairs. I wear them for modesty's sake in case my skirt should fly up or I'm up on a ladder (yes I do that in a dress) something along those lines. Or like the time my dog decided to chase after a cat while I had him on a leash and he took me flying head over heels down the drive way! I will say this about wearing dresses and skirts; I did wear pants for a period of time in my life, always loose fitting with something over my hips and I NEVER had anyone approach me in public and say they knew I was a Christian. Since wearing dresses only, people do that a lot and actually have told me about something or someone in their lives and asked me to pray for them. It does make a difference! I know this for a fact.

I actually find you to be concise as well as kind! I’m a Mennonite as well and came from a setting probably even slightly more conservative than you are currently in! I believe the move to so much immodest clothes has to do with feminism and I also feel it has to do with the fact that as a general rule men are giving to visual stimulation and women in a sense are being “sold” for sexual pleasure. Very ungodly. I do agree it’s hard for me to buy a dress I can wear without at least one additional clothing item going with it because of low necklines etc. one thing that has started is modest clothing companies. This has helped be they do tend to be pricey! I definitely found common ground with you about gardening and we also have goats! Blessings! Keep it up!

Great video, I really appreciate learning about how different cultural groups practice modesty. I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and many of the women in my congregation got so fed up with trying to meet biblical standards of modesty with store-bought clothes that they have started to have their dresses made. I still buy my clothes but find that thrift stores are the only places I can find skirts that are both long and loose enough! Its so true that what is considered appropriate is SO uncovered nowadays. Its nice to know there are still groups out there who value biblical teachings on this matter!

In my case it's strickly skirts & dresses outside my home, elbows, cleavage and knees covered. Having said that, my husband wouldn't be caught dead in anything less than a decent t-shirt and either jeans or knee length shorts and nobody calls that modest.

I appreciate that you acknowledge that there are more than 1 way to dress modestly. We are a Christian family, and have 2 little girls. We choose to wear pants or even tank tops. But we’ve really tried to instil in our daughter’s that God looks at the heart - and how we dress is a reflection of our heart. So we choose to wear longer shorts, high neck lines, dresses or skirts knee length or longer, no spaghetti straps etc. Because we want to honour God with our outward appearance. Our kids are only 8&9 but it just really clicks and resonates with them. Their both so conscious and convicted even as kids, what is and isn’t appropriate. It’s a tough balance with the world we live it. So many ‘cute styles’ our kids like.. but when we remind them of the heart behind our choice to be modest, the desire to be ‘fashionable’ seems to fade. Lord willing, they will carry this on throughout their life.

I recently joined a Mennonite church and have started to wear cape dresses- and have been really struggling with seeing the men wear tight fitting pants that outline enough to make it VERY immodest. I’ve been talking with our pastor to see if they’re open to changing this. I’d love to see the men dress in a more conservative, more modest way. It’s begun to feel like a double standard when the ladies wear two layers to cover up, yet the men wear basically whatever they want to, and glorify their bodies, irregardless of modesty in mind- I was told demon have more self control when it comes to that- and I’m so disappointed and dissatisfied with that answer. I’d love to see a higher standard in my own church when it comes to the men. It’s began to feel like women have a uniform, and the men are free to be worldly. (This is specifically my church. Not all mennonites have this issue.)
