On July 5, 2020 Mirjam Zadoff talked to Philippe Sands about his book “East West Street” and the video performance "Rückkehr nach Lemberg" ( • Philippe Sands: East W... ) which is an adaptation of Sands's concert reading "A Song of Good & Evil" and was created in a collaboration between Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism, Nova Touring International s.l. and Philippe Sands.
Philippe Sands’s book is one of the most innovative and most widely read publications on the history of National Socialism in recent years. It explores the question of responsibility for the crimes of the Holocaust and its impact on international legal practices to this day, especially in light of the legal definitions of “crimes against humanity” and “genocide” that were crafted in 1945. As part of the “Assembly” program, the Munich Documentation Centre invited Philippe Sands, the actors Katja Riemann and Jasmin Tabatabai, French bass-baritone Laurent Naouri and jazz pianist Guillaume de Chassy to present their joint production to a Munich-based audience.
The coronavirus situation made meeting in person impossible, unfortunately - but thanks to the flexibility of all concerned, and in cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Munich Documentation Centre was able to bring these five artists together virtually in a video performance. The result is an encounter between Germany, France, and the UK, filmed and recorded in private settings and without big camera crews. It is an unusual performance revolving around the big questions of guilt and responsibility - and, at the same time, a testament to community and creativity in the pandemic era.
