I'm about to embark on a new community for my customers. Your whole Q&A was really helpful because you are where I aim for my future! I also really get the not wanting to offend people. I'm in the marriage space and deal with therapist so it's extra dicey and scary... they have all the extra fancy words when they get angry or upset!! haha It's so validating to see you also deal with the murkiness of various topics. :-)

One thing I'm realizing about what I choose to watch on RU-vid is that no matter the subject matter, I need to enjoy who is presenting it. I honestly don't care WHAT you're talking about. This is so true! I’ve recently seen a couple other RU-vidrs that I follow kind of talk about the variety…or lack thereof…of topics on their channel and they said that if they don’t post certain topics or use certain keywords, the YT algorithm just buries their videos. Personally, with the RU-vid personalities that I love enough to follow & subscribe to, I will watch literally every video they put out, and I like having some variety…not just ALL decluttering bc it’s branded as a minimalism channel or whatever.

I am an adoptive mom of two siblings from Sierra Leone. I was 50 when I adopted the 1st at 8.5 yrs old. 60 when we finally got his 16 yr old brother, and I was a widow by then. Best decisions I ever made. Adopt based on your age. Those older children are totally worth it and very focused on their new opportunity. Bless you and any one considering older children. They are a known proposition, much less a mystery than an infant!

I'm 54 and I thought I was too old to adopt. I know I would have to adopt, and older child and I worry about all the problems they will have. You didn't experience a lot of issues with an older child?
@carolwinter3092
@carolwinter3092 Год назад
Jennifer Brown is right, these kids can have serious struggles. The caution is to keep your eyes and ears open and know what you are willing to deal with. My point is that just as a both child can develop serious issues, so can an adoptive child. But with an older child, you get a look. With a birth child, you take lots of additional risks. Children are a leap of faith either way.

Boy, is that true! Even though I found it a little jarring when I turned 60 (I'm now 63; took early retirement at 62), the sheer relaxation that I ended up feeling as a result of achieving so much life experience was wonderful. I could finally let go of unrealistic life goals and focus on the ones I really could achieve (many more than I had realized after I let go of the unrealistic ones), as well as interests I could reactivate after they had gone dormant for decades. I feel freer now and more creative than I have in many years, although I must admit it's taken me a year of being retired in order to fully detox from work-based life and settle into a life entirely based on me-time (I'm single with no family, in case that sounded selfish).

I quilted on the longarm while I listened to you. I just want to share how much you changed my life. While I've been a Flybaby for over 20 years (Flylady system) that got the house in order, but as Marla says, "You can't organize clutter." After I retired from the military, I stopped purging our things each time we moved and oh my, the STUFF! But I've gone room by room, closet by closet, and drawer by drawer. Do I miss any of it? Nope. But more than teaching me to declutter, you've taught me lessons on how to deal with stuff as it comes into our home. I still have loads more stuff than a minimalist (I'll never be one), but it's all manageable for us now. And thanks to you, I discovered Cass and Dara and they have helped me as well. You're an angel! So Merry Christmas and thank you for everything!

Greetings from Germany! 🙋‍♀️ It is very interesting to see and hear about your normal every day life because it is different in so many ways to our "normal" in Germany- especially homeschooling, which is not allowed here, but our school-system is totally different too. But there is so much more different, e.g. the cooking, baking, traveling... So everyone has different perspectives and believes. I love to get a small view into your life and chance to "look over the edge of my plate" (german saying 😉). People all over the world love you and appreciate your work. I find it ironic that you think that you need to get more click-bait-y with your video titles. There’ve been a couple lately that I’ve skipped because I was concerned about what might be in there, and I almost didn’t watch today’s video because the title sounded like it might not be appropriate for my family, which God built through adoption. I will also comment again and say that I do really think that middle schoolers and highschoolers need their moms and dads around just as much as when they’re toddlers and babies. It’s just for different reasons. I think a lot of parents think when their kids are older they can do a lot more stuff and be out of the house more and not see their kids, but your presence is definitely needed just as much. I say this as a mom of a 14-year-old, 11 year old, four-year-old, and eight month old,

I want to see your expressions, whatever you are doing, whatever’s going on around you. I will probably end up joining one of the private groups. I would love to lead a group in Decluttering By Faith, but I have not yet figured out how to approach people about minimalism. It was so awesome that you mentioned how you see other points of view when you get feedback different from what you are doing. I’m a decade older than you and I wish I’d started realizing this when I was your age. The more I experience life, the more I understand that any opinion I have most likely has a very valid opposing idea. Having these different points of view makes life more interesting and being open to hearing ideas other than our own allows us to learn tolerance, understanding, and compassion.

Dawn, I just want to share that as a parent of a 25 year old and twins age 20, if I could have homeschooled them I would have in a heartbeat. One of them especially has taken with him some things learned at school into adulthood that seriously tear me up. I’m a Christian and he has went WAY out into some beliefs that do NOT align at all with our faith. He learned they were okay while at public school. I know this will not be a popular comment but I don’t care. Just wanted to tell you my experience. I think there is a lot of not good stuff taught in public schools.

Homeschoolers are definitely used to being attacked, whether the other person intends to be hurtful or not. Choosing something that is not mainstream can leave others feeling like we are judging them for choosing the mainstream, even though we aren’t making our choices based on what our neighbors do. It can absolutely go the other way sometimes too, with some homeschoolers attacking public schoolers, but the ratio is overwhelmingly the other direction. Literally even cashiers at the grocery store can be judgmental when we are out with kids during school hours. I prefer to deal with it by assuming that the questions and comments are coming from a place of genuine curiosity, since it frequently is. When the person is clearly aggressive towards our life choices, I still try to respond as though they are asking from interest, since it tempers my replies with kindness and often takes them off guard.

Honestly Dawn, I really like you, but I just couldn’t take one more, “take your house back” commercial. I understand that RU-vid is a way to make money. And I understand that you are taking care of your family. And you are very sincere. But I’m being sincere with you now. As usual, your judgement is sound and thoughtful. I didn’t know I wouldn’t have my normal resilience after menopause so it’s great that you remind people about age and energy levels. I cringe when I hear that question! - Where will you be in five years. I understand we need to have goals and plans, but no one knows what will happen and five years is just too far out for me. Plus there's something about feeling like a failure if the plan doesn't happen. I will plan ahead months and maybe a year. (My step dad would ask new people I'd bring home this question within a short time of meeting them! I think that's where my cringe comes. I would look at my friend and mouth..."I'm sorry". I could see and feel it turning people off. It felt like they were on a job interview. And this wasn't just dates, it could be a girl friend. Not cool! 🙂)

I want to share something I realized while listening to the part about making friends. I think every “real” new friend I’ve made in past 5-10 years is one I’ve made because of joining a weekly small group at church or a weekly Bible study. Every church has a different setup as far as offering these, but if there’s a way at your church to volunteer to lead one, why not do so using the Decluttering by Faith book & videos, and let the church put the word out for you. It always helps to issue a few personal invites too to some women you already know or think might be interested, but mainly just pray & trust God to bring women who are interested and as you go through the material together and share yourselves & your journey, friendships are born and develop! And with people you might never even get introduced to otherwise! The key is being willing to be open and honest and share - like Dawn does with all of us! That’s why we all feel like she’s our friend, right?!

We had to take an emergency trip to Canada to see my grandfather who was passing away and we had less than 24 hours to prepare and leave. With a 15 minute spontaneous house clean and a few minutes to pack for the family we were able to do it. My husband and I have a 3 year old, 1 year old and newborn. Want to add a couple thoughts. First, now that I am 66, I feel 36, and the reason I don't say 26 is that by age 36 (let's average it out and say age 40), I found myself fundamentally very happy with my lot in life - at age 26 had too much angst - and my life has landed in that same happy spot year after year after year. So at age 66 I feel still fully vital and I think of age 36, or 40, or 46 as the most prime years of my life and even though I am getting older, I still feel connected to it. And it was not long after age 36 I gave my life a wild shake and went to medical school at the age of 38, which opened the door to an entire new set of adventures and responsibilities that I could not have envisioned before I stepped out and did it. It makes me think of your RU-vid presence in a similar way. Who knew where that could take you? But it has taken you there and I feel certain it is because you were already aligning with the path you were prepared to take. So who knows where you will be 5 years from now - but it sure will be an exciting journey because once you accept your unique self and smooth out youth's bumps of becoming that self, then every year that follows has new relish in it, and to share. Now I am excited for myself to see where I am at 76 and 86 and beyond, and am excited to see where YOU are at! The other thought is that the satisfaction life has brought is truly about what satisfaction I can spark in the lives of others and when you answered what you did about if you won the lottery, I understood at once what your impulse would be, to help others with it. Do you know, Dawn, I feel that it was like winning the lottery to have discovered you in 2020, because I feel your dedication and inspiration lift me up with every communication.
