+Talon Greenlee, However, this system is complicated and prone to failure, as to analyze every situation to find the correct words to describe the glass is inefficient. A good alternative is to say the glass is at "This Capacity".
I think experience is a better word here because when you die you're doing the action of being dead and hence you are doing the action of being dead longer than living, but you only experience life
I’d give it a little more credit than that. Thanks to school, I learned how to study the world around me, turn that information into knowledge, and use that knowledge to improve my abilities as a person. But yes, such institutions occasionally focus too much on the incentives and not on the goal.
Yeah, but if you ask me he's basically just rephrasing "do what you love", because, you know, you will love the good fishing spots. Honestly I think "do what you love" is great advice, and if you'd actually follow it (in the fishing spot kind of way), then you wouldn't have to feel bad about it because it's "an unrealistically high standard"
It won't be the fun looking-at-cat-gifs-type though. It will be Richard-Dawkins-like boring one, where you study their meaning, influence, spreading, etc.
"The glass is at half capacity," is also a favorite of mine. Or to be pedantic about the water vapor content in the "air" above the water, claiming it's half full because if its presence. Really, it's about rate. If it's draining, it's half empty; if it's filling, it's half full; and if it's rate of fill is zero, it's at half capacity.
Technically its 99.9999% empty because there is so much space between the molecules (both the water and air). This means everything made of matter is 99.999% nothing as well.
Hey - you comment frequently on videos, I just saw your fun comment on the vlogbrothers channel, right? I like that - we should all comment on mot stings we like.
So, to summarize this thread: Form the perspective of physics (which is really the only sane perspective there is), this question doesn't make any sense.
The glas half full/empty discussion is stupid. It depends! It depends on what, I hear you not asking? Was the glass full or empty before it reached the midway point? If it last was full, then it currently is in progress of being emptied and thus when reaching the mid point has come half way to being emptied, as in half empty. And vice versa. Was it just empty and you are in the process of filling it? Then it is half full when reaching the midpoint. Period.
and the funny thing is you cann aktually relate that to your life. When things are getting better its easyer to be happy with what you have. So its easyer to have a glase half full addetude
Baleogs are not beings of pure shadow but they once were Maiar capable of creating themselves any body they desired and their power would allow. Sauron (who was technically a Balrog too) is said to have been able to change his appearance when he still had a body, but he was an exceptionally powerful Balrog, so.... We don't know what about the lesser ones like Durin's Bane in question.
Morgoth chose Sauron to be his chief lieutenant, whom he gave command of all his military forces ... including the Balrogs. Sauron himself is not literally a Balrog. Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs was not as powerful as Sauron
Umm the line in LORT is "The balrog made no answer. The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew... and its wings were spread from wall to wall" its a page or two before the end of the chapter The bridge of KHAZAD-DUM. Not using the word like this time makes them real.
The "passion" advice was such a relief, it's something grown adults are still telling me to do when I know full well it isn't happening. I wish everyone used the fishing analogy instead.
A glass twice the required size? You must be fun at parties. Are you from the US? I try to build up a stereotype since a US American I once met declined another drink on the basis that he already have had one.
BR H I appreciate your kindness but I'd rather stick to my beer instead of having 2 beers and one of them inevitably dying ( no idea what the non portuguese term is, but you know, when the beer tastes awful after a while) And nope! Im not shoving them down my throat because that will increase the vomit chance by 500%
DeRockProject & the Attack of the Really Long Channel Name that's the thing, if we don't put importance on tibalism, then we wouldn't be talking about it
+Dice MM Lol I realize that. I was being sarcastic actually. I don't think Grey as fellow member of my tribe, just as someone who happens to think the same as I do. Idk if I feel like I have a tribe but if I do, it's definitely the entire human species. :)
The fishing metaphor for what to do with your life is genuinely exactly what I needed to hear, cheers Grey, you've probably stopped me making a really bad life decision.
The one time CGP burst out of his Redditor pseudo-intellectualism and became human. Only to dive back down with the rest of his videos, and it was three years ago.
@@Aadhitiya_Murali CGP Grey in almost all of his videos tends to make himself less than human in his presentations, practically robotic whilst dispensing information at a constant rate without pause or wishing to elaborate on basically anything. He's also a gigantic Redditor which means he's a plague on this earth that happens to be blessed with a decent amount of intelligence, but wastes it infinitely on a website that is a gigantic echo chamber at the best of times. He hasn't made comments like this before or since he made this video.
Welcome to Myths & Legends podcast. Today we're going to be talking about the Grey, originally from American literature, but now popular across the world, and you'll see how fishing is a really good metaphor for life. The creature of the week is demon who has wings that maybe are metaphorical.
Derek Wilson Grey and Jason do have similar voices! I think I actually thought 'wow this guy sounds like CGP Grey' when I first started listening. I've now listened to so many episodes of M&L that my mind jumps the other way when I hear the Broke For Free song.
Sorry I'm guilty of the "follow your dreams thing". For a long time it was difficult for me to realize many people don't have dreams they base their entire existences on.
Wow, I needed that "passion" talk real bad right now. Thank you. Also that writing down tip. So far, I've only consistently documented my dreams (the night ones), here's hoping I'll be writing more than that from now on!
Evil works out of the desire to hurt others. Neutral works out of the desire to help themselves. Good works out of the desire to help others. How they choose to implement that is lawful vs chaos. A warlord who loves to rule over others is evil. A warlord who wants power is neutral. A warlord who wants to empower people is good. Logan Paul is egotistical. He cares for himself over anyone else. He gains this power by bullying others and demonstrating greatness over them. This makes him mostly neutral evil, leaning towards chaos and true neutral. A person like CGPGrey wishes to be an individual known for being smart and entertaining. However, he also wishes for his viewers to become smarter and entertained. His strong philosophies and ideologies originate from academics. This pushes him towards lawful good, but close to neutral good.
Even if you boil it down to pure chemistry the number of potential humans as dictated by cohesive DNA combinations is a number so vast as to dwarf the astronomical. Not only are you unique, but you're *so* unique that, unless you're already an identical twin, the chance of your DNA being naturally duplicated during the lifespan of the universe is essentially 0.
You are failing to understand why Grey answered the question this way. If the question "what makes you unique?" is so easily answered, job interviews would surely become a lot less stressful. Unless you can systematically and effectively describe something like your fingerprints, your facial biometrics, or even map out your entire genome sequence, there is no practical way you can point out what is unique about you that no one else shares. As in, describe something unique about you that is guaranteed no one else shares, verifiably, and not an impractical answer. (Like "my DNA," because no one can possibly verify it save for an unprecedented international cooperation effort) Of course, I do not refute the argument that Grey should probably have chosen another question.
the thing about no one being unique in a world of billions is kinda based off the presumption that there are less than 7 billion combinations of characteristics and experiences that make up a human being.
Well I'm a professional animator, so doing drawings and saving my books helps me keep track of my progress. As for writing, I write ideas down for later, but also I take account of my current goals and priorities. And as those change over time, I can keep old goals/ideas from falling through the cracks of time. It keeps my from getting anxious about all the stuff (golden shit, I am convinced haha) that goes through my head: ideas for projects, music I want to check out, goals for my future, ideas on how to be less depressed, weekly goal lists. If I write it down, I can trust myself to find it again if it's important. Thus, I don't try to constantly try to remember everything. I can be much more in the moment, which is vital for my work, and my enjoyment of my life. Also, the act of writing and drawing itself feels good and relieves anxiety in the moment, while also being good practice. Having a small, pocket-sized book allows me to fall into the comfortable pillow fort of my creative mind whenever I want.
My fellow 7th grader says: "Set the bar super low, so if you fail, you expect it, and if it turns out good, then you have a reason to be happy." Best philosophy I heard ever.
The thing about school being a glorified babysitting service mixed with a game of trivial pursuit is so true. School does very little to prepare you for the outside world, and colleges do very little to prepare people for (most) vocations. Yet business still insist on you having this meaningless, very expensive, piece of paper, instead of using some sort of apprenticeship system where people can learn skills they will actually use while actually being productive. Additionally, high school gives everyone vast amount of general knowledge information that people forget like 90% of within a few years, and then colleges have the nerve to set general education requirements that do more of the exact same thing, except much much more expensive. Furthermore, blue collar wages continue to increase as many white collar jobs see a drop in pay because so many people are getting these degrees that the more menial jobs that require practical skills not taught in colleges are becoming more valuable. Yet, for the most part, we still need to commit thousands of dollars and years of our life to this institution that teaches us very little practical knowledge or life skills. tldr; our school system's f*cked up -sincerely, a frustrated college student
That's why you take something like programming, which, for all practical purposes, is a self-taught skill that you'll learn anyways, but college also gives you a fancy paper for having done so. If you want to skip the whole college thing, do IT. Cisco offers certification exams, as does Microsoft, that are usable in certain job situations without any college degrees whatsoever.
Allow me to guide you to "Hello Internet #7: Sorry, Language Teachers" and "Hello Internet #9: Kids in a Box" where CGP Grey and Brady Haran discuss their 'neutral' opinions on school.
It made me think that all the way up to high school is preparing you for college, and college gives you keys to jobs. It's valueless at teaching adulting...
Keep on dreaming, even if you can't make it your living. There's nothing saying you _have_ to make your job be connected to one of your passions. Although if you can, well, that's probably quite nice. :o) Work to live, don't live to work.
Grey's alignment chart was pretty funny. I remember seeing one for Batman with a quote in each slot. The alignment chart idea is much more fun and poignant that way when you can use it as a measure of how dynamic they are.
And then a few seconds later, when all the youtubers return, CGP is standing in his place. He's even pointing at 'chaotic evil' on the alignment chart.
Jesus christ I didn't think I'd find so much enlightenment by clicking on a Grey vid with meme in the title, this is amazing. Thank you for the analogies, it really hit for me as I'm sure it did many others.
Yes, everyone. That is except the Americans, Japanese, and Chinese (and probably several others I've missed). EDIT: did you know there's a calendar wiki!? It's actually super interesting.
It's weird how much of what you say sticks with me. Often times I look to myself for direction and hear your voice. I appreciate everything that you're doing mate. 🤘
Saying 50% is so much simpler; then the receiving listener will automatically interpret that to mean "full" or "empty" to align with their opinion; and then, with creative use of vague language, you have tricked them into thinking you are part of their tribe.
Re: the D&D alignment chart, I once envisioned bringing that to the 3rd dimension by adding the factors "Blue", "Orange", and "Neutral". This was quite some time ago, however, thus I cannot remember what the "Blue" and "Orange" factors meant. I would be quite happy if you, Grey, or anyone else in the comments were to supply their own meanings to "Blue" and "Orange". And before anyone asks, yes, these colors were inspired by the colors of the portals produced from the primary Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device from the Portal games.
I literally started keeping a little notebook in my pocket a few months ago. I’m 22, and the same has been absolutely true for me. “That loop booted me into a real human.” How marvelous.
@@mateozapata3112 It's that way because when you speak of dates at least in America, you say November 7th, 1999. Instead of the 7th of November 1999. That's why its that way. Don't hate the way other countries do something just because you don't understand or think your own method is superior.
