I accidentally chopped a portion out of the video that wasn't meant to be chopped out A few people ask what Mike does/did for a living. Mike is self-employed in the USA and was self-employed in Germany (as a photographer)📸

Honestly i was like mike when i came to america, i was so in love with how nice everyone was and loved all the small talk. It took about 3 months, until i had some more serious issues to talk about, when i noticed HOW surface level everything is.😂 For example, in germany it was normal to talk about the war in ukraine as a small talk topic, you would say things like that you are worried and then each go your merry way... NOT possible in the US, serious topics are not talked about in this way. I had to pretend that there was something else on my mind.😅 Love the german directness.
@nicoles9077
@nicoles9077 Месяц назад
If you lived in the US then you know a lot of people are unhinged, couple that with 400 million guns and of course people will keep things superficial. It’s very easy to tick people off and they go back to their car and get their gun and it’s a bad outcome. So yes, superficial is the easiest route unless you’ve known someone for a long time and you have deeper conversations

Hello Hayley and Mike, what a funny video. I am from Germany and my wife is American. The first 10 years in the US was great, exploring the whole country, seeing every state. However, after some time it wears you out and especially that you cannot walk anywhere, that all is closed at 10PM, but the worst is that the kids and teenagers do not have a life to grow up. They are trapped in the house and need mom and pap to drive them around. It is actually a very sad country after a while.
@nicoles9077
@nicoles9077 Месяц назад
Dude where did you live that your kids were trapped in the house? Were you living off the grid? You had no parks nearby? You’re kids weren’t invited to their friends house for play or sleepover? They weren’t involved in sports?
@benzo___

@@nicoles9077 you sound a bit defensive lol you are totally reliant on a car in the US in most places and scenarios, that's just the truth (?)

@@benzo___ I’m not defensive. You are the one that made your life sound sad that your kids are trapped in the house and don’t have a life. Those were your exact words. I don’t know you, but there are always things to do you just have to go sign up and do it. If your kids want to do an activity where they are busy all day Saturday it’s called band. Every American knows how serious those band guys and gals are lol

I can relate to what Mike said so much ^^ We went for a vacation in the US a couple weeks ago and both me and the kids are extremely reserves and introverted back home. We talked to more people (as in strangers) on our way from the airport to the hotel than in an entire year at home and it felt so refreshing and nice with all the friendly people everywhere. Honestly we didn't want to go home. I don't blame you for wanting to explore when you first made it there after years of trying to get there :)

Mike, Thanks for sharing part of your journey. It's so interesting to hear that paperwork is somewhat less than in DE, especially concerning your drivers license. Here in France It's much more difficult for an American to obtain a French drivers license. The "Hi, how are you" is a difficult one for me too. Especially when you go into a store. What's up with that?! Every time we go on vacation to the US I have to get used to it all over again. I also have to get used to traffic lights hanging over the intersection and not situated on the right hand side of the street. That's difficult and I have to pay extra attention the first days of driving. Why don't you go check out Denver, Colorado for a place to move. We visited this spring and I really liked the area. There a many nice neighborhoods with houses with these american style porches. Very quaint! Lots of city parks too. And then there are the Rockies. Und Streichwurst?! Ah nee, die kannst du behalten. Aber deutsches Brot? Oh ja! Das verstehe ich vollkommen. Das "Brot" in Amerika ist wirklich.....:) Viele liebe Grüsse aus Paris

How cool that Mike engages with the friendly Americans and doesn't condescend them. Has Mike mastered returning items to the store? This is something that freaked my husband out, when I would return something simply cuz it didn't taste good. No receipt, no problem. The other day my meat from Aldi was rancid before the due date, and I did not return it for a refund because the process is so unpleasant.

I love how he found the one benefit of American sliding windows, that they don't take up space in the room. I've bruised myself quite a few times because I've misjudged where that huge window is/has moved to in the breeze. However German windows are unrivalled for ease of cleaning. I clean my windows often just cuz it's so convenient, like a crazy old German lady.

Eagle kreisching 😂😂😂 Screeching would definitely not sound as funny 🤭 So Mike was able to enter the USA last October but didn’t get the Greencard until this January? Was that a so-called engagement visa? Was he allowed to work without the Greencard? Mike is right in wanting to get to know his new place of residence first. He should take his time, be thorough about it. It took me 12 years in southern California to decide that I didn’t want to stay in the USA after all, but those were my personal, very subjective experiences, and it will be completely different for another person. Colorado is beautiful !!! Some of my husbands relatives live in northern Colorado so we visited a few times.

I wonder how Mike was able to get a Green Card. I’ve been trying to move to the US for ages and it’s very hard. I’m currently in Canada which is not too bad. I left Germany for Canada. But living in the US remains my dream. I want to live in a warm place

I have no idea how he got it, but the only ways I see that he was was able to get one is: a) Diversity lottery (a lot of Germans win this), b) Marriage to Hayley (this is my theory), c) EB5 visa where he invests $1million to start a company in the US. If he has a PhD, he could self sponsor an EB1; I don't think he got it through other employment categories (EB2, EB3) which would require a US employer to sponsor him (which is how I got my green card, but he is self employed). He may also have some other family members that are US citizens that may have sponsored him.

That was fun! I could relate as I moved to the US in 1981 to live with my American husband. Mike's reactions mirrored mine in some respects. The green card was easy though, maybe because we still lived in Germany then, it was just a visit with the consul and that was it (maybe I forgot, who knows). And then I did not become an American citizen because I did not want to lose my German citizenship. That German rule was just changed recently and I finally became an American citizen. Mike thinks that everyone is really friendly, and while true, it is different in Germany where people generally mean what they say, and are honest. In the United States, it is not polite to be honest, so as a German person I never know what people really are thinking. That's difficult for me. I know it, but I don't like it. (Grammarly just suggested changing the previous sentence! to "I know it, but I wouldn't say I like it" Aarghhhh! They call it diplomatic, and I call it hypocritical. Case in point!) Yeah, so 45 years of living in the US have not turned me into a "diplomatic" American. Thank you for this video, made my heart content!

I can't stand the greencard process. It took my husband 6 years to get his greencard. The major issue was them saying we need the original copy of the marriage certificate (we were married in Switzerland). We would send the original and 3 months later we would ger we need to send the original. After 5x of paying for the damn marriage certificate my husband did some reasearch and found out we needed an Apostille stamp. The government never told us this. We had to figure it out on our own. After this every single document that came from Switzerland, we got an Apostille.

After 2.5 years and $3000, we pulled my husband’s green card application ( even though he was about to get it granted) and moved to Germany . 25 years later, we regret NOTHING! Best decision ever.
