(R.I.P. Phife Dawg) A Tribe Called Quest just released the We Got It From Here.. album and we wanted to highlight some of the production techniques used by rapper /producer Q-Tip. Sampling jazz chords is a great way to get that ATCQ sound that inspired so many of your favorite producers of today. Instructor MGTheFuture plays a couple of chords, samples them into Maschine, Maschine Jam, then adds the finishing touches with 'J57 Timbs and NorthFace' and 'Voices In My Head' sound packs. maschinemasters.com/shop

thanks man. i don't even rock maschine, but happened to be chopping stuff up and paused to watch this... and the trick of dumping chords to a sampler patch is something i haven't done in a while, good stuff. I think the only extra element maybe worth considering is putting in loop points on those chords, so you can sustain them if needed....

Cool watching you construct your track, bro! Nice video. I see you can use a little help with the theory, though. Ok, here's the deal. That third chord is Eb minor. Here's my explanation: The first two chords are definitely major and then minor, in that order, just like you said. BUT...looking at your fingers, I can see that "Ab" (or G#) is the root of those chords, not "G". You were playing a black key (on a chord you called G major) on the bottom, and "G" is a white key. So the first two chords are Ab Major and Ab minor. The third chord that you were trying to figure out is an Eb minor. That note you tapped in your left hand is the root of the chord. But, if you wanted to call the first and second chords with G# as the root, then the progression would be G# Major, G# minor, and D# minor. So, the tonal center (or key) of this progression would most commonly be called Eb minor. But, you could also say that it is in D# minor. Peace

3:10 if anyone wants to add sounds like the ones he's describing to their playing, borrow from the parallel major/minor key. also, as he mentioned, use inversion voicings.

Hey man I love your videos. Very detailed and helpful. I've been making beats for a little bit and got some on my channel but I just wanted to ask what exactly happen at 6:34? Like when you sampled the chords you played one chord back and got like 6 chords back going down in pitch. Is this due to the program you use? I use Logic X and have never seen such an option lol. Regardless, I never even thought of sampling chords I play and going from major 2 minors when switching between chords on the keyboard (at least in the way you did). I love learning more about this so I'd love a response. Regardless keep doing your thing man it's dope.

2:09 D#-/F#. I hope that helps. If you are unsure about what a chord is, first try to identify the root, in this case D#. A trick to find the root is look for a 4th relationship in the voicing, Usually the root is the top note in the 4th. in this case, D# is a 4th from A#.
@subschool5
@subschool5 7 лет назад
Awesome job! Another tip is learn how to spell all your arpeggios verbally. That way if you know D#, F#, and A# (in any order) add up to the D# major triad, it's just a matter of notating which note is in the bass of the voicing.

what you were doing starting on Gmajor, to Gminor then F# to A# to D#; tonally, seems like its in the key of G# minor, with flat i and I(flat tonics).
