In this episode of Would Would (insert producer) Do? We highlight legendary hip hop producer 9th Wonder. MG The Future puts together an Ableton Live lo-fi / underground hip hop sample chopping workflow inspired by 9th Wonder's rhythm roulette. He explains how Ableton Live simplifies a would be time consuming task of finding perfect tempo and pitch of drums and samples. He then shows how groove pool is used to create a loose pocket for the sample and drums before they are glued together by a lofi style compressor. recently been getting into producing and this tutorial i found was amazing. One thing though that i didnt quite understand (and is an issue i face alot) is at 6:37 although the sample loops perfectly, It doesnt look like its exactly a 4 or 2 bar loop on the ableton map but it ends up not mattering at all. Its obviously a misunderstanding on my behalf but im just looking for some clarity so its something that i can learn. Sorry if i sound too nooby, thanks in advance to anyone who can help xx

Right on, i dig your tutorials MG. I come from using a rack sampler/MPC for like...2 decades... but am trying to now do everything "in the box" and lots of the capabilities of the software are still new to me. I still do a lot of stuff the old fashioned way - chopping and editing my samples in Soundforge, and actually doing tempo conversions in my head to get things within like 10% of each other so i can fine-tune within a hardware sampler. I'm still trying to get my head around the groove pool stuff because it seems like there's a world of potential there which i haven't even touched.

Cool trick for adding grooves to MIDI clips, not sure if I've seen that. Protip: If your sample is just going to end up in a Simpler anyway it makes more sense to start the chopping in Simpler than the arrangement view. The grid will never get in your way, you can easily get your chops in time with the "warp as x bars" button or leave them unwarped, and if you have a pad controller you start banging those pads a lot sooner!

That "secret" compressor is called the Vulf Compressor by a small company called Goodhertz. All their plugins are flame. Stop hoarding sounds and plugins, that's not the secret to being a good producer or musician, it's totally 100% how you use them.
@alexyoungbased
@alexyoungbased 7 лет назад
Oh word, sorry bout that. That last part wasn't addressed toward you per say, but there is definitely a trend among a lot of producers who genuinely feel like the sounds and plugins are the secret. I think thats BS

lmao clearly you blind cause despite him jokingly say "secret compressor", he clearly has it visible on screen and you can see what it is. doesn't take a phD to figure out. sounds like you just salty from endlessly hunting after plugins that you think will automatically make you sound better.

MG The Future word! yeah I'm waiting for Maschine MKIII, because with MPC Touch and X dropping, they need to answer with something super dope! hello pal! i would like to know, if you use some kind of eq on the drum section or samples to get a great sound or you just leave it like that? is the same thing on the master section? i mean you add limiter, eq, compressor, etc.. I really would like to know or is just a lofi thing?
@BkBangatv

Dope. like your work flow on this one. very powerful tips MG The Future. Abelton is ahead of the game with that warp mode, but presonus studio one is on their heels as far as workflow with samples are concerned. Appreciate the info MG #KeepBangin!

@BkBangatv 7 лет назад
ALL facts Bro! Studio One is most certainly that silent kill. specifically in the mix and mastering game. I'm still working out the kinks with Melodyne think I need to upgrade ore something but its still useful none the less. logic is cool workflow isnt compatible for me personally. dope stuf tho bro very inspiring.

2 part question: how long did it take you to learn ableton? I'm new to producing & really want to learn, but the learning curve always seems to throw me off, but I'm sticking to it this time, definitely. also, did you also have this learning curve "frustration" or "impatience"?

Why does "Drums 1" end up in the groove pool at 9:19 when you ran it back? Is that an extracted groove from the drums that you played--which had the initial Salt--hung up groove on it? If so, how'd you get it in there?
