SPOILER COMMENT AHEAD. To the point you made about whether Swastika's character should have also died, I felt like she needed to live. That is her punishment for all the wrongs she meted out to her daughter. She was living with the pain of the loss of her unborn son, the loss of her protégé (and the knowledge of how he died), and now she must live with the pain of the loss of her daughter, and the knowledge of how much of it was her responsibility. Too harsh? Sorry, I'm also pretty unforgiving when it comes to bad parenting!

You know I don't think she should be punished I understand she did some things wrong but as considering the post pregnancy depression added with child loss and without any mental support she must have herself gone through some kind of mental illness she herself was not able to persue her dreams which added to it I think at that time nobody cared about mental health that's why both of them did the dead

No Indian movie (at least) Hindi has covered this type of complex mother daughter relationship, also how central character makes some questionable choices but her vulnerability and fears justify those choices somehow. How we all really want the mother to care and eventually be there for her child and the child not to know that the mother somehow in some weird way cared. The music and lyrics in this movie is so soul touching and so refreshing. There is a moving intergenerational trauma. I wish some more facets of Swastika's character showed why she made choices she made, was it depression, ws it similar rejection by her parents? There are some references to those times which make sense, as a singer her mother received complete disrespect and she knew she didn't want her daughter to be seen in that way by anyone, so she strictly rejected her daughter singing in the movies. In 1930s, women who sang or danced in movies were literally considered from very bad and questionable (character wise) families, there was an issue of family prestige. There were also a lot of cultural symbolisms used in the movie. Picture of Tripti in the photo with sitar draws parallel to goddess Saraswati. I just watched the film once but it was heart breaking, my own complex relationship with my mother, I could not watch it fully. I need atleast 3-4 times to get the symbolism in different frames. Babil is so fucking emotive and great, the way he has been captured and directed is so amazing. In his short role, he just was a beautiful presence throughout. There were other amazing characters: the music producer (who exploits her), varun grover (lyricist in the movie), the other singer ( Tripti refers as elder sister). The world was so believable and beautiful, you want to cross the barrier and step in the world. They did do things like Black Swan, especially when they show a monster statue. The scene where Babil is like frozen and converses with her in imagination is so amazing. The way movie captures women's pain, gender dynamics, overall power politics, amongst disintegration of central character in the chaos is amazing. I somehow hoped that atleast few seconds before dying, she realizes her mother somehow cared because that's what she was running after for her whole life. Taking career in music, singing, wining golden award, using her sexuality all to please and get approval of a mother. This movie made me think about how I give feedback to my child. Please watch the interview on film companion with the whole team, it shows director and cast talking about some of pre-work to get into character .

The film was ethereal, haunting in places and all in all, DIVINE. Amit Trivedi absolutely hit the ball out of the park and same goes for Anvita Dutt. THIS MAY BE A SPOILER COMMENT. I wonder whether there was any foul play in announcing that swastika's character had lost a boy ..I think babil's character is actually her son (they say he was an orphan and probably jealous people kept him away as he could have been the next legend like his father and grandfather)...anyway through fate they find each other and she never gets over it when she loses him a second time..they show a second where she and him have the identical hand gestures
@SMon-wh6om
@SMon-wh6om Год назад
Good observation but Qala and Jagan dont look like twins though
@flizak666
@flizak666 Год назад
I think even if Jagan was her son or not, the narrative still holds where she has been mistreating her daughter and considering her inferior to how she would've raised a son. I think when I saw the hand gestures, I saw it more as a maestro/singer intuition that Qala lacked.. They show her mother doing the hand gesture when Qala was a child and this gesture is something that Qala wanted from her mother (i.e. approval from her mother). It was powerful when her mother was doing it during Jagan's performance because it showed Qala getting upset as she has never received this. For me it came across as a musical connection Urmila and Jagan shared, which came round to Jagan saying music was life for him. Whereas for Qala, because she was doing it for her mother's approval she would never be able to figuratively relate with the hand gestures her mother/Jagan do. But I did for a second think Jagan would be her son!

Alia (Gangubai + Darlings- I would encourage Rick in particular to rewatch Gangubai and keep in mind that he's watching a SLB film first and a brothel owner biopic second- Alia's performance works perfectly if you view it from that lens. The background music or the score of this film has been composed by Sagar Desai, not Amit Trivedi. You have been constantly told that in Indian movies, more often than not background score is composed by a different musician and the songs are composed by a different musician, but you guys don't seem to pay attention. In India, songs are given more importance than background score, and therefore the producers don't pay enough money to the musicians for composing the background score, and as a result of that, top tier musicians don't compose the background score of a film and instead a lesser-known musician is hired to do the job.

This is the worst Indian movie I've seen this year lol. It's rare that I'm in complete disagreement with your reviews. I also rarely have an issue with the acting but Tripti's acting was HORRENDOUS. She literally made _the same face in every scene_ (wide teary eyes and quivering lips) even scenes where she was supposed to keep the face in front of others. So journalists only noticed her weird attitude when she did the split personality thing at the end and not when she was making this face right from the first interview scene in the movie??? 😑 Her monotonous overacting was especially painful to see when she was playing alongside Swastika. In the last 45 min I could barely tolerate her. Just before the credits they show her smiling and looking happy in black & white footage... THIS should have been in the movie. To show the contrast between the face she was showing others and what went on internally. The 2nd issue with the movie is the utter lack of subtlety when it came to visually represent her state of mind and when it came to visual metaphors. The gargoyle close up when she gives the guy a blowjob? lol I burst out laughing and that was def not the intent. The snow that she imagines around her, the black cloud around her etc... Yes the cinematography is pretty but it's so unimaginative that I cannot see any poetry in it. Ooohhh she gets dark thoughts so there's a black cloud around her... Come on 😑😑😑 The portrayal of mental health is also borderline problematic but that's a secondary issue. The core plot itself is fine (although not original at all), the cinematography is good (the sets are pretty but looked too fake though), all the acting minus Tripti is good, as well as the music. But her acting made the movie very annoying to watch in the 2nd half, and the visual metaphors only got me rolling my eyes and even _fast forwarding_ (something I almost never do) the last studio scene where she sees snow and couldn't hear. I can understand that some people would enjoy the visuals because of their aesthetics, even though they were grossly over literal, but I maintain thar her acting is objectively bad here (she was obviously directed to play it that way so it's first a writing problem I guess).
@hemanareddy7757
@hemanareddy7757 Год назад
Interesting..., she did make that face always and only towards the end of the movie people start noticing her, but since I was already sure it is inspired from black swan the emotions potrayed are similar, even Natalie portman has a similar tensed and sad face through out the film, would want to know what you think of black swan
@AriaIsara
@AriaIsara Год назад
@@hemanareddy7757 I also felt like it was inspired by Black Swan! I saw it a long time ago, I remember thinking it was an alright one time watch but that it was very overrated. I feel like Portman was more subtle in her acting but I may think differently if I watched it now.

glad one more person saw this. pathetic puppy face. even depression has nuance, subtlety, as the story evolves, gala's experiences change, one should see evolution... sorrow, jealousy, guilt, rage, madness, fear, disgust, seduction, sexuality, friendship, so many feelings could be expressed, and she stuck to pouty toddler whose chocky was taken away. kuch bhi

@@harshraj6116 where you lack common sense is understanding the motive of a person behind the act. Qala's upbringing in a toxic environment prompts her to go to any lengths to win her mother's approval, who, by the way, was no better than a chauvinist. An audience can intelligently tell between what's right and wrong. Nobody's getting brainwashed when one looks into a murder's motive. Intent defines everything. 🙏

Anushka Sharma is not the producer of this film. She officially stepped out of 'Clean Slate Filmz' in early 2022, in order to focus on her acting career. Her brother, Karnesh Sharma, is now the owner of the production house. Regardless of the official announcement, it seems like Anushka became a part of the production house just to give her brother's career a push., and now that it has become popular, she decided to move away from it.
