Our history making inaugural flight from London to Perth begins Hatton Cross near Heathrow Airport, as we take a tube from the famous Myrtle Avenue to Terminal 3. We enter the terminal where the festivities are underway, with lots of media and TV crews. We head to the gate where there are further celebrations. As boarding commences, I am pulled aside and asked if I would like to have a ramp tour to see the outside of the beautiful aircraft decorated by Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye "Yam Dreaming". Once we've had a chance to see this aircraft up close from outside we are whisked back inside as the last passengers to board this flight!
The captain welcomes us aboard and we are soon pushed back for a very short taxi to runway 09R at Heathrow. We jump the queue and line up straight away, before making a long takeoff on Heathrow's longest flight! Once airborne we proceed over Europe, towards Romania, the Black Sea and Turkey. The sun sets overhead Turkey and we continue over Iran, flying overhead Shiraz and getting a distant view of the lights of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We then cross the coast to the Indian Ocean, crossing the Maldives and passing the south coast of India and Sri Lanka heading towards Australia. The sun rises over the Indian Ocean, and the tinted window shades are cleared to give us a great view of the cloudscapes over the Southern Ocean. After 15 hours we commence our descent towards Perth. We break through the clouds for an approach over Perth's southern suburbs, touching down ahead of schedule on runway 03.
We get a water cannon salute as we taxi to the terminal, before parking and making our way into a crowd of news reporters and media as we enter the arrivals hall. We hang around to watch the press interview the captain before making our way out to a rainy day in Western Australia.

That is one efficient airplane. 9009 miles traveled with no refueling. Quite a milestone for aviation.

Yes, but DUH... It's about travel from England to Australia. Since both have used the metric system for yonx and the idiotically backward United States, Liberia and Myanmar are the only countries in the world that don't, it's 14,498.6 kilometres. Note the spelling of the word, too, which the US is too stubbornly obnoxious to use. 🙄

That was almost the full distance to the Southern Oracle. No need to fly on the back of a luck dragon this time but instead on this wonderful Boeing 787-9. Hats off to you Noel for putting this incredible video together. From the exhilarating thrust of take off, the fascinating airshow maps, the relaxation of the night time white noise (in sleepy chunks), appreciating the vastness of the Indian Ocean and of course descent, approach and landing, I am glad I finally took the time to enjoy every minute of these 17 plus hours. Experiencing this is the next best thing especially in these restricting times for travel and now I feel inspired to try this journey for myself one day. Thank you!

Or do you stop to change cards / battery? I didn’t see a jump cut in the video.. and how did you record the tower? And the external take off landing??? Sorry so many technical questions.

This guy gets a high-five from me for being brave enough to fly that flight in coach/economy! Even though he had a window seat, having a full airplane with the seat next to you occupied would be a nightmare.

Finished the video!! It only took me a week!! What a lovely welcome you had to Australia and what a nice man you are. You’re so polite!! The captain was such a sweetheart. I’m terrified of flying so have so much respect for these guys. I love going to New Zealand and thought about this route instead of via Asia or America. Trouble is I am a bit concerned about flying so far out of radio contact for so long in all that ocean! I know flying from Akl-lax you cross miles of the Pacific but there are little islands on the way! I’m just paranoid I guess lol

This is brilliant. I watched this start to finish. I've travelled so many long haul flights and the sound of jet engines is so soothing, thanks for posting this. I always stop in Singapore or Dubai (prefer Singapore) when I'm doing UK - Aus, I think I'd miss the stopover, but this flight looks amazing.

That is so cool that you got to stand on the tarmac next to your airplane before your flight! I wish I could do that on every flight I ever go on just because I think the planes are amazing to look at, especially up close like that! Also, the 787 is just a gorgeous aircraft I must say! I think the 737 is the best looking Boeing airliner personally, but the 787 and the 777 are both right there in terms of aesthetics! Great video man!

Yes I agree it was a fantastic surprise when they asked me if I wanted to go outside to film, I'd mentioned to the staff that it was a shame you couldn't really see the livery from the gate and they came up to me a few minutes later to say they'd arranged a ramp tour! It's a beautiful aircraft :)

17 HOURS??? Oh my gosh, you recorded it all? No pausing? That's amazing. Qantas is doing a really good job on these routes. The original route to London-Heathrow was from Melbourne with a stop at Dubai. Now it has a stop at Perth! Since Qantas inaugurated this route, they should be able to fly to many destinations around Europe from Perth, like Rome, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, etc. If they went from Perth to Dublin, that would be the longest.
@noelphilips

Yep it’s currently my longest full flight vid but the longest will be an hour longer and coming in a few weeks :) Great to see Qantas expanding and can’t wait to see nonstop to Sydney in a few years!
