I have viewed many "how to" videos on youtube. Yours are the best I have ever seen. They are straight to the point in easy to understand language with visual allowances for time to catch up to the video. Excellent!!! Keep 'em coming!
Thank you for a good tutorial...been attending a GIS class for 5weeks now and haven't gotten anything about what GIS is and what it does. This tutorial makes it so much easier to use the tools and hazard a gas of what GIS is...
Great video! I was looking for tutorials to help people who know next to nothing about how to use QGIS, but most either cover intermediate users or are not so easy to follow. Thanks for this superb introduction video, Klas!
This video was exceptionally helpful in learning QGIS for the first time. You answered all the questions I had that arose while watching the video. The video is comprehensive for first-time users of QGIS. Thank you for making this.
Klas, your ability to teach QGIS in the right way is great. You really seem to get where beginners will fumble and make mistakes. Really a great tutorial.
I forgot a lot of things since I studied some GIS during my Bachelor. Thanks to this video I remembered many basic steps. Targeted and easy to understand - thank you!
congratulations on an excellent tutorial. I have had a six month break from GIS work and have taken the step to learn QGIS upon resuming work for myself. I am very pleasantly surprised at the functionality and am now wondering why I had not made the change a long time ago. I went through this video methodically and it was extremely helpful. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video, I have a job interview in a few days for an assistant site surveyor position for my city's water company. I work as a solar site surveyor for a residential solar company and we actually don't use GIS. Just CAD and google sunroof. The recruiter gave me a heads up of what the interviewers are going to ask me about and one of them is if I'm familiar with GIS.
Pew, I spent all afternoon with this 30 min video due to all the pausing but I got my own treasure island in the end - thanks a lot! First time ever with QGIS and it worked!
The "pause now to catch up" note was perfect. I feel a little embarrassed that I needed it to be an active learner. One way to improve this video would be to add a table of contents to the description. This would make it more browsable.
00:00 - Introduction 00:33 - Download and install QGIS 02:59 - Interface walkthrough 04:50 - Install a plugin: OpenLayers Plugin 05:17 - Add a background map 05:25 - Navigate a map 06:59 - Manage layers. Add a polygon layer 07:44 - Add an attribute to a vector layer 08:18 - Add a polygon to a polygon layer 09:26 - Edit vertices of a polygon 09:58 - Save a layer (to disk) 11:10 - Create a shapefile 12:00 - Add points and a linestring 13:13 - Style a layer (color, marker type, ...) 16:45 - Duplicate and invert a polygon layer ...
Thank you so very, very much. Genealogists/historians new to QGIS often need to show the villages/towns/cities our ancestors once lived. That requires importing coordinates, labeling, showing terrain, making the map look old, etc. Didn't see that your intro included that information.
Thank you for your tutorial! I'm trying to understand what makes QGIS unique and powerful. If was to take a screenshot of Bornholm Island from Google Maps, I could load that picture into any graphics program (Adobe Photoshop/Illstrator, Affinity Designer/Photo, maybe even Microsoft Paint) and make a similar image to the one you've created. But QGIS can't just be simply an image editing program just like the others!
Great video. I am just meeting QGIS for the first time and the current version is 3.0.2. I need to do minimum bounding - convex hull on points to determine area (home range of turtle movements over spatial scale). I found great videos explaining how easy this is in previous versions but it appears 3.0.2 does not have this feature. Is it coming? Is it possible to install a previous version of QGIS so I can have access to these tools. It looks like it was incredibly simple from the menu options. Any thoughts?? Thanks for the tutorial - it was a great start.
Thank you so much for taking time to slowly show us what to do. Am an expert now🙌. Please tell me how to add title to my finished new print composer. I have added the scale and key. But I can't seem to find the title
Hi Klas, thank you very much for teaching how to use QGIS. I have a question; can you remove "layers" from OpenStreetMap, let say for example national parks and name of small towns?
Thank you for this great-so-far video. However i am having a problem when it comes to editing lines(13:00~). The button for toggling edit on/off is greyed out. What do i do?
It is crazy how projection changes whether you pulled base data first or shapefiles first. Do you assign coordinate systems when saving shapefiles? My first tutorial on QGIS, great video!
This is a very important aspect of GIS files. If I can I usually assign a new layer a projection, when I create the file. But you can always set the file projection when you save it. Projected, or un-projected coordinate systems matter a great deal in QGIS. And as I've mentioned in other videos (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vKNo23i8KI.html) the projection doesn't change just because you change the definition. This is a common misunderstanding if you are new to GIS. I'm not sure if this answers your question, but anyway... Thanks!
Hi! Do you know anywhere that there is a "pre-beginners" tutorial? Maybe not so much QGIS, but with GIS software in general. For instance, in the tutorial we starting adding "vertices" to the polygon. Now I know how to add a vertice, but I never knew what a vertice was, and I still don't know!! Thanks!
First time with QGIS and these videos are lifesaving! Just one question about this video though: when I try to work on the label of the island or the ocean, I cannot find the labels and it shows just a "0". On the list of lables it shows just "123 FID", no island or not ocean. What am I doing wrong? Thank you :)
Assuming you created the "name" field for the layer (7:20) and filled in "Treasure Island" in the attribute table, you should get a label output on your island when selecting "Show labels for this layer" and "Name" in the "Label with" drop-down. If you have "123 FID" it means you have selected the automatically created "Feature ID" or "FID" field in the "Label with" drop-down (18:45). The Ocean layer is an inverted polygon and can't be labeled the same way.
great beginners lesson and thank you, but please when explaining a program by video try to put you cursor directly on where you intend on clicking and not move around (i sound grumpy, i apologise)
As a genealogist, I am creating maps for oral histories and family genealogies. Ease of use is my number one criteria. Previously I used ESRI BusinessMap, which has very limited global mapping flexibility. Should I learn QGIS or ArcGIS?
Jenny Shangraw We'll, GIS is never considered easy. You could ask around in genealogy circuits what they use. Anyway, QGIS is a great free GIS at least on par with ArcGIS in most applications. I suggest you start with QGIS and see how it works out.
My Mom's ancestor's (Koch) emigrated from Hesse and Westphalia, Germany to Michigan in 1830s. Doing them proud with all my mapping. Is there a SIMPLE QGIS tutorial for my needs?
OpenLayers plugin is "dead"! (Still in the experimental section) Use XYZ tiles instead: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M-WfXHbGOlw.html Or the QuickMapServices plug-in.
iamgoddard QuickMapServices, openlayers was N/A. I see the map options under the Web DDT, but the maps do not appear. I also downloaded map sph files and tried to add a vector layer, those maps do not appear either. Any idea?
excellent well done, considering how long it is, you cut out the junk and the pace is good. Odd music playing very low in the background? Will watch others to figure out finally how to map MTB trails.
Hello Karlsson, Happy New Year to you. Inquiring how can i clip a basemap to a polygon, say i have an area of interest and just want the basemap to only appear within it. How do i do that in QGIS.
If by "clip" you mean you want to show only a specific shape at specific locations you can describe as one or more polygons, you can use a layer in black and white with blending mode "Screen". Upcoming QGIS versions can even do this on a group level, so you can view underlying information without problem. You can't "clip" a raster layer or a service to an arbitrary shape. If you have the raster layer as a file and not a service, you can clip it to a bounding box, and the rest of the shape can be achieved with pixel transparency.
Question: I need to visualiza AIS data sent from ships and make it accessable through a website/app/... . Is QGIS the right system for such a task? Because I read that it's the best OpenSource GIS, so it would be great if I could use it for my purpose.
If you want to visualize in "real time" then no, QGIS is not the way to go. Then you will need to use other tools to convert the AIS data stream into some form of web service that can be "consumed" by a web map framework like Open Layers or Leaflet. For static viewing of AIS data and web publishing of the situation at a specific time, then yes, QGIS is one way to go if you include a plug-in like qgis2web.
I'm living in china and work on a golf course, I'm using QGIS to map the course and record useful information specifically the area of greens and fairways. I'm having a problem using some of the maps.. bing seems to be the only satellite map that will work because google is blocked in china. Is there any other newer maps that will work in china? Thanks for your help!
Excellent tutorial however I am having problems when trying to load the OpenStreetMap layer. I just get a black screen rather than a map. Any ideas on how to resolve? Thanks :)
When I try to create a line or polygon, I can't complete it. Video says to to right-click, but when I do that, the line or polygon disappears and no dialogue comes up. Any ideas on what's wrong? Thanks.
Sir...I need your help,um just facing a problem in creating a new shapefile layer in qgis..like it's coming" layer creation failed. Please check the message log for further information"n on checking message i'm just getting a blank space with warning written so what is the solution n why it is happening?why the software is not creating a new file
Thank-you I am finally learning QGIS. I can not duplicate the island. The duplicate button is greyed? I turned off and on. Also changing my trail line to dash line would not apply. I see it applied in the preview. Whats wrong??
Hi. Hard to say what your problems are, but check that the symbol layer component you want to duplicate is selected (not all layers are possible to duplicate). As for the "not applying style", if you have a simple symbol style it should just work (as long as you style the correct layer and it is visible in the map).
I'm actually using this video to get to know QGIS which is going well. Unfortunately QGIS crashes when I select the SVG marker. It already happened twice in a row. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Great job ! It is very helpful, thank you very much. But I have a little problem. It has installed in Russian by itself, have no idea why. there is no option to choose language... I prefer an English version, cant find where can I change the language...Could you please give a hint what did go wrong? what can I do to solve this problem? Thank you in advance...
Well the "English" menu option is "Settings" , "Options" and "Locale" tab in the dialogue. There you can "Force" the GUI to have a different language than your operating system (restart QGIS required). As a default QGIS will try to use the same language as you have set in your operating system, so I guess your OS is in Russian.
Thank you very much, I even had no idea that the format of region and language was a Russian in my laptop. It has never "appeared" before... I solved my problem. Thank you once again :)
hii Klas Karlsson, very detailed video of instruction. i would need the map software to plot out the path of road that i just made when i have jogged. any idea how to achieve it ? these are all manual plotting. for example, i am jogging this part of park today, and i am going to plot all the road into the map. then tomorrow i will jog new path inside the park so i am able to jog all the path available in a park .. or a town for that matter. then i will add in the path manually after the jogging. and this repeats until the whole road and path being jogged by me. do you have a video of instruction how to achieve that ? your help is very much appreciated. thanks andrew
I don't have a specific video for exactly what you want, but it shouldn't be any problem to accomplish what so ever. You can create a "jogging" vector line layer in any vector format, just as I do in this video. When you want to add a new road you don't have to create a new layer, just enter "edit mode" for the present layer and add a new feature to it in the same way. Each new feature will become a separate object in the layer table that you can give unique attribute values. Don't forget to save your edits, and close the "edit session" when you are done. Hope this answers your question.
Hi Klas,Plugin MMQGIS after successful installation does not show up in Web Menue.Might be this is because of API Key that I have but don't know where to add that key?
Hello ! I always have a problem. When im finishing my map (adding Scale bar, legend etc) i don't see Item Properities section (there is only composition and atlas) so i can't edit any item.... I tried to reinstal QGIS turn it off and on but nothing help. What is the problem? Maybe You can give me some advices?
It might be a simple solution. Panels like "Item properties" can be docked and hidden. If you for some reason closed it the settings in QGIS will remember this and keep it closed even if you re-install QGIS (settings are not removed by default when you un-install QGIS). IF this is the case you can show the panel again by either right clicking the tools menu and selecting it, or go to the View/Panels menu and activate it there. (All above asumes you are in the print composer)
While I was trying to edit the point layer for beach, I found that I could not change the letter A to B even after when the font marker was selected . There is no alphabet (letters) to choose among the other symbols in the selection box compared to what is shown on the screen when you are doing it.
I am trying to outline the map just as you did, but I am having problems after clicking the add feature button. It is forming weird shapes rather than allowing me to outline the map. Can you please explain this further?
Not really sure what your problem is, but make sure you have the "island" polygon selected in the layer list when you start clicking out points in the shape.
Sir,your tutorial was really helpful.we are doing a project on landuse survey in Qgis software. How can i get the total area of agricultural land in the given satellite image.please help me to find the agricultural land in the given input satellite image
To calculate area in QGIS 2.xx you need to have your polygons in a projected coordinate system with units that makes sense, like UTM. Then your $area command in the field calculator will give you the area based on that unit of measurement. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TKSu9Dg1wHQ.html
Not that I have done. It sounds like a point sample vector layer with suitable attributes you can use to crate for instance an IDW interpolation raster to visualize the result over an area...
Not sure what you mean by that, but note that this video covers QGIS 2 which is not supported anymore and you may have a more recent QGIS installed. Try the new updated video (link in description) and see if you still have an issue with the color style.
It's dead! This is an old video, but mostly still valid if you are stuck on 2.18. For QGIS 3 there's a new video with new options. Check out the QGIS playlist on my channel (links in description).
Hey Klas, i am having problem in loading the maps Whenever i go for google physical it shows an error saying OpenLayers Plugin: Printing and rotating of Javascript API based layers is currently not supported!
Open Layers maps are really just meant to be quick fixes and rough estimates for a GIS. If you need production quality and that includes printing anything, you should use other sources. Open Layers, or for that matter WMS, is essentially not intended for any other use than in a small browser map on screen. Using the API the developers of the Open Layers Plug-In have made it possible to show the maps in QGIS, but the limitations of the source is still there. If you're still having a problem I'd suggest you try to find downloadable source data.
It really depends on where you are! The best sources are usually your national land survey organisation. You can also try OpenStreet Map, NASA, USGS or just google "geodata" and the region you are interested in.
Web Map Services like OpenStreetMap and other Open Layers doesn't work off-line. For that you need off-line data. You can download geodata from several sources on Internet. There's also some plugins that help you "pull" data from on-line to a local database. All data you create yourself work fine off-line.
