"Who's in charge in a pack of wolves?" Broadly speaker, Mom. The lead female, alpha female, doesn't really matter what you call her. The most dominant female (usually the only one to have pups, but in larger packs there may be multiple breeding females; the others will still defer to one female) by the numbers is most often followed by the rest of the pack. She makes the decisions and everyone else goes with it. That's what decides who is ultimately "in charge."
