Alan's points can't be correct, unless they factored that he's on most, if not all, shows in the series. So even that fact of his accumulated points has possibly a half life, as compared to everyone else.

The number of times a panelist would get a question 'right' would be vastly outnumbered by the amount of 'wrong' answers they have also given. But perhaps these were taken into consideration as well by the QI elves.

Yeah but answering wrongly in the past does not guarantee it is correct now. True facts decay into falsehoods, not vice versa. The chance of a true answer getting changed over time is relatively large (e.g. 7%), but the chance of a true answer changing into one of the wrong answers they made before is veeeery small. For example, Alan likes to answer 'Blue Whale' for any animal related question. The one time he was correct might no longer be correct so he loses a point. However even if the answer changed for every question he answered wrongly (instead of just 7%), the odds are none of the new answers would be 'Blue Whale'.

That would make sense, if it wasn't clear that points in QI are arbitrarily given and subtracted as they have no meaning.

I'm with you on this, gary and Marko. My thought exactly when I first watched the show. But it wouldn't have done the reputation of statisticians any good. I myself booked this in the "points don't matter anyway" category. But I agree. It's wrong.

That might be more true then you think, years ago at University I was working on a project on how many people illegaly download music from the Internet in West London. This seemed like a massive project and I was meant to go out and survey 1000 people. Well I thought that sounded like a massive job so I just made up the results. The conclusion was that 4 out of 5 people would just pirate music rather than pay. Im sure it was probably true but I didnt actually bother finding out. I needed to go to seperate towns and get a fair sample of the population. That meant an equal number of men and women from all age ranges. Anyway I ended up with a 2:1. I wonder if anybody looked up that study and quoted my figures.

That is kinda what I was thinking about... and yes you're wrong and here is why. If we have a list of 100 facts, we know 50 of them will be false in say, 10 yrs but we don't know which ones. Say, we pick 50 facts at random and claim that they are true. As long as out sampling was random, 25 of the 50 facts we picked will be proven false. So the claims we can make about the truth of the facts has the same half-life as the facts themselves. That is why I would disagree with what you said. I think Phil Moore was getting at that.

Yes, somebody needs to go through all the facts from all the series to determine if the 7% rate of decay is accurate.

You're mixing up half-lives. In the medical fields, half of facts will be wrong in 10 years. In QI, 7% of facts will be wrong in 1 year. Without having done the maths, that's about the same order of magnitude.

He said 7% of the facts from that single episode. They also showed a graph. Were you not watching?

Having done the calculations, i come to the conclusion that, not only is it the same order of magnitude, but they very likely came to this number of 7% per year (decay-constant) for QI-facts based on their number for the half life of medical facts. (I am not sure it is at all reasonable to assume that QI facts decay exactly like medical facts)

i mean "wrong fact" or "unknown" that is now "known" is probably more easily called a "discovery", which is almost always beneficial. This is what scientists love, to be proved wrong by new evidence, its how we move forward.
