​@@AppophustThat might be how it is generally used now in some places but not what it means to others. In British boarding schools it is where you go when you are sick although it is often shortened to 'the san'. I have also come across many references while reading books written or set in the 19th/20th century - when talking about a place to recover (or not) particularly from terberculosis. I can certainly think of historical or literary examples relating to soldiers but would be interested to know where or when it only applied to them. And yes this is a genuine question.
