QNAP TVS-h1288X NAS Review - Ground Breaking or Hardware Overkill? nascompares.co...
Businesses these days have tough choices to make when it comes to where they should store their data and despite the seemingly impressive specifications on the TVS-h1288X, knowing whether it is suitable for your needs is no small decision. For many, it is ‘hot’ data that needs to be accessed as quickly as possible, whilst still keeping speeds high and latency low. Perhaps it is cold data that needs to be stored securely, in three separate locations and with as little intervention as possible. Maybe even a combination of both, and whatever way you look at it - cloud storage might be more affordable, but it just lacks the peace of mind that a physical and company-owned server can command. That isn’t to say that 3rd party cloud isn’t a good thing, that is precisely why the need for a storage system that uses the virtues of each into a single strategy is so great in 2020 and 2021 - providing fast access and the feeling of local storage, anywhere in the world. This is achieved with smart caching, cloud synchronization and a whole heap of power and it is into this arena that QNAP has released their latest multi-tiered desktop solution that brings together all of their high tier innovations in 2020 (ZFS, intelligent caching, cloud-gateways, enhanced virtual environment management and more) - today we are going to take a good long look at the new TVS-h1288X NAS system, a system with a huge degree of anticipation behind it to live up to, and see if it not only can justify the £2000+ price tag (without storage media) but whether it can compete with the already popular TVS-1282T3 and TVS-872XT NAS that largely dominate this tier.

Oh yes....whoop whoop whoop!!! This is the one I’ve really been looking fwd to....test Plex first please!!!...we already know it’s going to blitz everything else, the big question is how well it handles 4K transcoding (don’t even waste your time doing the lower resolutions). I mean, if this can’t handle the 4K transcode, then there’s an argument that you might as well go for the H886 I think, and save some money. Re only supplying one cat 6 cable. I kind of get that and don’t mind it, I can see a logic. If someone buys a NAS gets it home and then realises that they forgot to buy & do not have a cat cable available, that can be frustrating. Or, if they only have cables suitable for 1GBe at home then they may not see and realise the full potential of the purchase and be disappointed. So, throwing one cat 6 cable in makes sense just to get someone up and running from day 1. If they included, say 4x cat5 & 2x cat6 cables all 1m long, but the customer is positioning the NAS more than 1m away from router &/or desktop, then giving away 6 cables that are too short would be a waste and we’d be here complaining about companies adding to the landfill. 1xcat6 seems like a fair compromise to me.

With all the drive bays removed, this looks like a Microwave oven. Can you do a test to show how well it will heat up my porridge in the morning please....

Just thinking out loud, in the hope some one out there will read and correct me if I’m wrong. Wouldn’t it be better to move the 2x 10GBe card from the 8x PCIe v3 slot, to one of the x4 v3 slots, to free up the x8 slot? Logic is that PCIe v3 x4 would be 4Gb/s I think, which should just about be sufficient for the needs of two 10GBe ports without throttling them. Then, the 8x slot would be free for, say, Qnaps NVMe card with 4x M.2 NVMe storage sticks.

The unit comes with a low height bracket for the 2x10Gbe card in the accessory bag. You can swap the bracket and move the card over. That's what I did to make room on that side for a full size add-in card.

@@phogandivephogandive3885 yeah, I did the same when I got mine, my point above (a year+ ago) was that why Qnap does not do this by default

Great video. I’m definitely thinking about getting this nas. Does anyone know if you can start with 3 or 4 drives and add a additional drive as you go so I can keep the Initial cost? Previous Qnap systems you have been able to add a drive as you go into the raid as long as the drives are the same size. Any help would be great

Hello, I have a TVS-1282T3 with bay 1 that is failing. Whatever drive i put in Bay 1, when I reboot, goes missing, until i pull the drive and put it back in, at which point it gets detected again and rebuild, UNTIL I reboot the system and bay 1 goes missing again. I thought this was the hard drive but I've replaced the drive several times and it does appear to be the bay drive. My TVS-1282T3 is out of warranty for hardware Since the TVS-H1288X is a 2020 model, is this still the upgrade to the TVS-1282T3 STILL the upgrade or is there another one I should be looking for? I am using my QNAP for PLEX Thank you

I had to cheap out and order the TS-h886 instead. Still a great unit. Who knows, maybe I’ll buy this and use the 886 as a backup LOL. Thank you once again for an excellent informative video.

Customer Review G. Feamster 5.0 out of 5 stars The incredible hulk! Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2017 Verified Purchase This guy weighs a ton and is a monster and can do many things at one time. Plus reliable. It's linux based which tends to be the best performing OS and they give you lots of packages with a nice visual interface (GUI) plus you can dig deep (or learn how to dig deep) into the underlying linux.

Hi Robbie, Thank You for this excellent review. It is really getting more and more difficult to decicide, if you are looking for a NAS that supports video editing and multimedia streaming. Not sure to go with the TVS-872XT with QTS or TVS-h1288X with QuTS Hero... I really appreatiate your reviews. I am sure, that they are helping allot to make decisions. With the new QNAP series and the different OS your posts are highly needed. :)

I’m debating this vs the 872XT. This has more horsepower but also more noise and expensive memory.

Can an admin setup a NAS to NAS remote backup between the two different files systems (QTS 4.3 to QuTS Hero) or are there incompatibilities?
@buffalocreid
@buffalocreid 3 года назад
Yes, this works great, you can choose RTRR or Rsync options within Hybrid Backup Sync or you can do Snapshot Replica between the two OS. The only thing that must be QuTs Hero to QuTS Hero is SnapSync, this will be released with h4.5.2 at the end of the year.

Hello, sir. You seem to be very up on the game here. Can you please reply to this: what's the thickest 2.5" drive the bay will hold on this device? Thank you.
@parahumanoid
@parahumanoid 2 года назад
At a glance, it seems like 12mm should be fine, but I can't tell for sure because the drives I have are SAS. However 5TB 2.5" drives exist and I'd consider them.

NVME M.2 or 2.5 SSD for the system volume? Trying decide which makes the best sense. I have no plans for caching just a fast System volume for apps.

Please do a 2-4 cam Video station test and video encode test using the intel and a 3rd party card such as mini sever virtual machine host would use in a small business or home office power user would need for off loading encodes

Does the 16 bay version have similar benchmarks? If I am going to spend 2k for this I might as well spend 2.5k for the extra 4 bays

If you look at Qnap's switch offerings, they seem to favor SFP over 10baseT connections for 10Gbe. Why then is this NAS equipped with 10BaseT copper 10Gbe and not SFP? Why not at least offer the option since the 10Gbe is obviously an add-in card?
@estusflask982

Yeah SFP would be better
