A few years ago noo. It's trundled faahkkin further doon the brae noo...the 'new' regiment...The Highlanders (Seaforth Gordons and Camerons)...they've disappeared as weel...an the new Royal Regiment Of Scotland...is full of men fae Fiji. Nae 'Jocks' left in the English retirement home that we used tae call Scotland.
Yip, and people forget the Queens Own was only 33 years old. The facts remain that across the regiments, recruiting was an issue. It did make sense to reduce the number of regiments, and it should also be remembered that English regiments were hit far harder. The Rifles were an amalgamation of some of the most famous regiments, The Light Infantry, The Royal Green Jackets, The Devon and Dorsets and the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire regiments. All of whom where affected it created by amalgamations in the 1960s.
Sad for all really , they disbanded the Fusiliers ( the biggest recruitment area from Berwick to Manchester to Yorkshire ) . If the Scots can't fill there own ranks then why disband regiments that can . Now please don't get me wrong , what one American General said ' he was envious of the British Army's regiments where local lads joined local regiments ' . The MOD has to many pen pushers , the Government now knows were short ( Cameron PM idiot ) . Bring back as many regiments as possible and save our forces .
