I like the "weird" way these work on the Canson XL paper (the veining effect). Thanks for showing! I would LOVE the selection of your favorites. That would be brilliant! It's SO overwhelming for beginners--and whole tubes are just such an investment if you have ZERO clue about what you want/need. All of the other products you mentioned as ideas also sound wonderful :D
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 7 лет назад
Thanks Rori! Would you prefer a hand painted chart or a dot chart (which would be slightly more expensive? :)
@redforrori
@redforrori 7 лет назад
Probably the dot chart, bc then a person could paint those out how they want to and on whatever paper they want to use. I've had dot cards that had enough paint to use on the card, and to make individual swatch cards or a small trial painting/mixing chart. I don't mind paying for those, as they're certainly much cheaper than buying an entire tube of a color you would never use--and then being "stuck".

I really like the look of that chromium oxide green. I love the way it veined up. Instant grass! I always seem to gravitate towards the more subdued colours. I was drooling over all your green golds.

Phew, the cards of every colour, amazing resource. I like Golden’s blog where they talk about things few other brands mention like vegan ingredients and why some colours have no lightfastness rating, also a whole explanation of their binder. It sets them apart where others ignore emails if you try to find out. I’m tempted by the 3 sets of 6, though not all at once, this is a brand I’ve heard a lot of raving about.

Great video Denise! 😁 I have about 29 qor colors at the moment & I really like them. Though I will say I agree with you about the price vs size. Most of my colors came from the sets, but I did buy regular tubes as well. TFS! 😃 P.S please Don't enter me in the giveaway...i already have this sampler card. 😉 I would rather have someone win who hasn't gotten a chance to try them out.

Hullo Denise, I had this video pop up after watched another older video by Hajra Meeks! I am truly glad that you are continuing to create wonderful content and that your videos from when your channel was “In Liquid Color” are still available and continue to be relevant! I am still an avid user of DaVinci Watercolors even after I was given more QoR watercolors. I did spend some money supporting the country of Ukraine and found their Rosa paints a joy to use and I have wholeheartedly recommended them too!

Another wonderful video Denise. Qor is my favorite for their flow and 'bloom' when used wet in wet. Daniel Smith will always have first place in my heart but occasionally I splurge and treat myself to a small Qor color. That cobalt teal though....sigh. So pretty. I love color charts and your tutorial on how to do them. I also used your color swatch tutorial to make all of my color swatches. I use them both all the time, they have been invaluable. Thank you for all that you do for all of us as viewers. Keep up the good work Denise!

Thank you so much for your kind words Lea! I'm so glad my references have been helpful! The cobalt indeed is quite nice. I love Daniel Smith as well and go to them as a first line of action but I definitely prefer QoRs or MGrahams Cobalt teal to DS's.
@lealea12368
@lealea12368 7 лет назад
In Liquid Color I had the same feeling about the Teal after seeing you compare them to each other and then comparing DS to Qor in my own color swatches. I was surprised to be honest. Nice to know there's other good ones out there ;o)

I love watching your videos on a Sunday morning whilst I'm out on the balcony watercoloring. I always have a giggle to myself whenever you mention a color that I happen to be using. Today, I just started doing a sky wash with M Graham's Cobalt Teal at the very same moment that you mentioned it. I like the idea of dot cards of your recommendations.. and of course, blank swatch cards. (I have a guillotine at home that would make fast work of this, but where I am at the moment I only have scissors which would just be too painful. Instead, I made a full sheet of cards, but as you can guess, I always manage to mess up at least one, or the colors run into the neighboring swatch.

That quin. magenta!!! Wow. Just gorgeous. I think Qor colours certainly have a market for certain colours that you can't get with other brands, I think. And as you said- with the sets that other brands don't have. Sucks that their tubes are so much smaller, though, bit rude that. Thanks for the demonstration!

I think the price is due to the fact that the binder was developed by Golden and so they need to make back the cost of research. It's a common thing for brand new products. I figure if they get a patent and after the patent expires, the paints will be cheaper, but that will be quite a few years from now.

even after getting the sample card I thought these paints were just to expensive to buy I am currently thinking of the dan smith paints as there is a resounding opinion that they are quite good. I had a terrible customer service experience that I have been told more than once that I must have done something to elicit such a negative response, but I really did NOT! I am trying out the DaVinci paints that your recommended and have zero complaints so far . . .

Great video. Your paint comparisons are always so informative. I have a few QOR and like them very much. I agree they're really expensive so I tend to buy Daniel Smith and sometimes M. Graham with the rare Windsor & Newton. You've inspired me to redo all my swatches and put them in a binder. Right now they're just a pile held together with a rubber band which isn't as helpful. I'm always looking forward to your next videos.

Kinda mesmerized by the color payout you were getting! Then broke out of trance when pricing was revealed. Thank you for keeping us informed so we know where to spend our nickels and dimes! Just to give you the feedback you were requesting: Swatches are the one thing I have mastered painting! Monet can have his landscapes, I can throw some paint down in a semi-straight line! Ha Ha! So, for me, I think I'd probably purchase one of your animal paintings before I would do a swatch card. Hope that was helpful. You DO however make the nicest swatch cards.

Great review. Love how you have the swatch cards. I just switched my Daniel Smith and other watercolors on 2 x 2 pieces of watercolor paper & put them in coin size sheet protectors. Eve has hers in coin protectors and I wish I had seen those first! Mine are all floppy in their pockets and slip out easily. And don't worry, while I do have a lot of watercolors, I promise it's not like I have dozens of full palettes lying around. Many are just samples that are sent to me and luckily I had enough to swatch them out for review and add them to the binder

Teoh did a video on these and claimed they are less vibrant when used from dried pans. But it was from a messy and possibly slightly contaminated palette (which is fine- not saying it's bad to use a messy palette- all of our palettes are messy, and it actually helps color harmony in some pieces for mixing... I digress), but for comparison sake I think that was possibly the most likely factor of why his swatches were dulled. On one blue color he used I noticed he accidentally rubbed a little bit of a burnt sienna-like color into the blue which is going to neutralize it a little Also when working from dried pans, there is going to be more variation from person to person in wetting and applying the paint. How much water used, how long the dried paint was soaked, how much did you scrub your brush onto the paint, did you go back for more pigment after first application, etc etc

I have a bunch of QOR paints (got the 24 color set AND got a literal random handful of tubes at a local art store that had a crazy discount +buy 2 get one free sale), and a lot of Daniel smith colors and.....I love them both, and Daniel Smith has been at the top of my loves list because of its flow and saturation. Weirdly, I find qor to be TOO saturated, which I thought was crazy to say! Their paints are lovely, and if you find a set or your local shop tries desperately to get rid of them the. They're absolutely worth grabbing, but...... I'll stick with my DS paints for ultra saturation.

Thanks for the review. I own about 8 QOR paints, mostly in the range from green gold to quin magenta, plus the teal. I am not sure if they are worth the money to be honest, but they work well and the company is great to deal with, Cathy there is always very quick to respond to an email. I have noticed that fingering in other brands as well, but I admit that it is a bit much for my taste.

Hahah it took me a WHILE to figure out that you paint a color chart differently than I do. I kept wondering why the colors at the top and left sides were so grey! Wow, that Qor mini binder is really cool, but soooo expensive! It's interesting how you have had different experiences with drying them in pans, than Teoh and Jane Blundell have had.

Loved this Qor review! Thank you!!! The quinacridone magenta is definitely my favorite color, also, followed by the cobalt violet from the second sampler. Please enter me in your mini giveaway. When you are doing your swatches, should the amounts of pigments being mixed, be of equal amounts, 1:1? Or should the vertical hues be in a higher ratio than the horizontal hues, 2:1?
@InLiquidColor

Thanks you! I go by sight, until it feels closer to one color or the other. You could do it more methodically if you like. The other video I have goes into more detail and there's another version you can do by just mixing one combinations and in the second square, dilute it to a light wash so that you can see the paint in full strength and watered down.

Thanks for this very interesting review. I am retired and a watercolor newbie so cost is important to me but what I found for me is that the QOR 5ml sets is a cost effective way for me to expand my palette as opposed to purchasing full size tubes of any of the artist paints. I love these paints and another thing to note is that the samplers do not repeat colors between the 6 tube sets. I have 2 sets now and will order one more. I also found that the DS sampler set of the Primatek paints is another cost effective purchase in adding a fun variation to my regular paints (and off topic, sorry) but what a nice surprising touch to my floral and landscape palettes. Have you reviewed the Primatek paints from DS? I do not need to be entered into the contest, would rather have it go to a person who had not tried the luscious QOR watercolors yet, and I am already a fan.

Thank for another wonderfully in-depth review! The colours look delicious. I've been curious about the Qur paints for some time, but they are not available in Finland. So there's the added cost of international shipping and if bought outside EU, the exra delight of paying import taxes too. Too annoying! 😉

I have QoR's high chroma set and love it! I'd like to purchase more, however, they are really pricy for the amount you get! I love the card swatches you made, and keeping them in sleeves...great idea! More and more artists are referring to their paints by numbers now and not so much by name, which is a great idea....sometimes....till you learn the numbers! It's also a great way to know if there is more than one pigment in your paint....ie....some are a pure pigment with white in them. Is there a master chart that has the numbers and the paint names? So instead of purchasing a "mixed color", I could mix it myself. Thank you so much for sharing .... I've learned a great bit!

@InLiquidColor 7 лет назад
Hi there! Each company should have their own color chart with pigment information. Common names vary so you cant assume every color called cerulean for instance is made with the same pigment. You can also check out handprint.com for a master "encyclopedia" text reference (some pictures but mostly text) documenting most pigments.

Those are wonderful colors, but they are also quite expensive here in Europe too maybe one day they will be on sale and then I'll try them :)

Good review. I would like to commet that daniel smith's watercolors usually cost more. Some as $20.00 a tube. So if it is bigger, it is higher in price. Some QOR watercolors are around $8.00-$9.00. Plus more vibrant. I rescued a watercolor i did by putting in some of the QOR to not so vibrant daniel smith greens. Made it so more beautiful.

Here in the US, DS is less expensive per mL for the vast majority of their colors, excluding some of their rare gemstone Primatek colors. QoR does not carry these pigments, so it's unfair to use them in the price comparisons. Pulling prices from the standard online art supply stores, OoR is $8.03 for earth tones (Series 1) for 11ml or $0.73 per ml. Daniel Smith's earth tones (Series 1) are $10.34 are $0.69 per ml. Pulling from a higher tier, their cobalt teals are $12.65 for QoRs 11ml and $12.83 for Daniel Smith's 15ml. They handle extremely differently, so that is up to personal choice, but QoR is more expensive here.

Thanks for doing a review on Qor, and bring up how they flow differently then other brands I'm assuming it has to do with the type of binder they are using I know golden/Qor makes a synthetic ox gall medium that they sale I'm just not sure if they also add it into their watercolors as well.

Late to comments here, but Qor must be doing a marketing push right now because I just picked up their High Chroma 6 tube 5ml set at my local art supply store for $20.99! I checked online and Dick Blick & Jerry’s are offering the same price. So that’s $3.49 per tube & one of the colors is the cobalt teal. I switched them out and really like them.....beautiful transparency. I’m still working on building a pro set of watercolors and far from making any one brand my “go-to” brand. So while I like the Qor a lot, so far, I wouldn’t necessarily buy them again unless their prices become a lot more competitive to other premium brands.

itsadonigma the colors are so lush and intense that I have been pleasantly surprised at how long these 5ml tubes are lasting me, plus the sample sets do not repeat colors so I am able to budget in a nice palette.

Another great video Denise. I had heard from someone that you cannot use Qor with other watercolour brands. Is there any truth to that -- I assume it has to do with their different binder (if that is in fact true).

Cant really buy qor in Australia except I did find a 12 tube set which I purchased. Im trying to find out how to tell which ones are warm and cool but cant find any info online. Any help greatly appreciated. I cant wait to put them in my palette but have to wait until I can determine temperature. thanks.

I believe indian yellow was in the first sampler if you want to check out that video. I am still very new to gouache so I have yet to try them much together, though I do use white gouache regularly in watercolor paintings for highlights when needed.

Denise, when you get a chance, can you explain that thing about the Amazon dealie where I can help support you. Next month, I'll be 65, so I am not as instantaneously intuitive about these techie things as you younger folk. I saved your X-mas gift suggestions vid with the link, but I'm unsure if I sign into Amazon first and go back to the vid with the link or if I can just use the link to get to Amazon and then sign in. Crud, I don't know if that's even clear. If you can explain it to me, I'll do it when I want to get a couple of those brushes, the Mijello palettes, etc. Sorry I'm confused 😕

Thank you so much for asking Blurta! I really appreciate you looking into the extra trouble. I have an Amazon shop which can be found at: www.amazon.com/shop/inliquidcolor (that link is always in my video descriptions too if you need to find it again). That link has my specific recommendations, but once you click on that link, anything at all (doesn't have to be on that list) that you purchase in the same session will help kick back a percentage my way without costing you any extra :) If you want to (no pressure!) you can even save that link as your amazon bookmark and then purchases will always go through my affiliates link, BUT I totally don't expect or ask anyone to do that if they don't want to or it's too much trouble. Thank you again for you kind support and trying to figure out this technology thing with me (I get it, I don't even trust depositing checks into an ATM, I'd rather go to the tellers! haha).
