It’s been a long week of rain and being busy so I haven’t activated in a few days. Was much needed to get out and operate some CW for a Parks on the Air (POTA) activation. I paired the Icom IC-705 with the Chelegance MC-750 antenna, two of my favorites.
I fully intended to operate Winter Field Day from the park, but I chickened out and just decided to do a POTA activation on a WARC band. I just wasn’t confident enough in the exchange and guidelines for WFD to make sure I did it right. But no matter, I enjoyed the activation anyway!
Thank you for watching & 72!

This week the "Radio in the Park" with the club was also happening. I did CW WFD contacts before, during and after. It takes me two to three listens before I copy all and then I jump in to make the contact. Getting better every year thanks to the practice and guidance I get from all you that put up your activations on YT and help me/us improve. 72

I believe that the singing Cardinal was louder than a 599 during part of its exchange, they liked the sunny WX too! I heard virtually nothing on 40M during the day while I was playing with my TT2, so 30M was a good starting point. 10M was on fire I heard, makes me want to get my IC-718 out to Crooked Lake to try 28.060 MHz, but 17M & 12M might have been good POTA choices during WFD alternative choices too.
@w4arb
@w4arb 8 месяцев назад
The sun coming out was very welcomed! 30M is hands down my favorite band. It’s open to somewhere 24/7, and never overly crowded. Just have to avoid the DX SSB stations in the early morning. 73!

Yes Aaron, I agree that working POTA and including another activity like WFD can cause a lot of confusion and frustration especially while working CW. I couldn’t hunt this past weekend due to my volunteer commitment at my local state park and then going directly to my ham club in California City to work WFD. I tried to catch you on 30 meters when I received a Ham Alert you were working POTA. The propagation was not in the cards for me. I’ll keep on trying. 73 KA6VVD 😊

Thanks for trying! I haven’t operated any field days or contests yet and I want to. But I enjoy the peacefulness of POTA. 73 and hope to hear you on the air soon!

WFD was fun this year. I worked a couple POTA stations because I knew they had to be working hard for those contacts :) I think they'd have had an easier time just calling CQ WFD instead and not mentioning POTA. I split it and worked SSB Saturday and CW Sunday. I didn't call CQ myself until I was really comfortable with the exchange. The event could have used more casual paced CW operators. Next year (and regular Field Day) I'll be one of those casual CW operators earlier on. I think 17-18 wpm and a GM was plenty effective at pulling in contacts. Treat it like an extended POTA activation (with food and coffee) and I think it'll be a quite relaxing weekend. I highly recommend N3FJP logging SW. I logged on paper last year, what a mistake. I got to use the zip top LL Bean bag this weekend that I scored in the trash!
@w4arb
@w4arb 8 месяцев назад
Sounds like a great time indeed! I’ve tried N3FJP’s logging software before. I personally didn’t like it, but I don’t like any of the options out there currently. LOL. But that’s another story for another time. I’m actively working on building my own logging app. The LL Bean tote is a winner! I use mine every day. 73!

I don't use it for POTA activations; in fact I'd probably use paper instead (which I do for CW only activations). But their contest templates are nice. I don't know why they don't make a POTA template. Good luck with your app; I'll be interested to see it. Heck, an updated version of HAMRS would be great.@@w4arb

Aaron, I agree on the WFD and POTA stations being confusing. I was hunting Sat and watching for spots on the POTA site. Then I hear the spotted station calling WFD ... what?? Anyway, I bypassed him. Thanks for another video. Bob WB6TIS

@w4arb 8 месяцев назад
Glad I’m not the only one that feels that way. I’m all for participating in WFD but it does get confusing when spotted for POTA too. 73!
@toddhowell2299
@toddhowell2299 8 месяцев назад
Agree. If also doing WFD, POTA activators would have had an easier time just doing WFD from the park and then logging it with POTA too. Just keep POTA to yourself and let it be a surprise when people get the park in their hunter log. There's plenty of traffic, no need to rely on being spotted. The exchange took some getting used to, but with good logging software (I use N3FJP, but I believe HAMRS also has a WFD form) it wasn't too bad. Next time I'll practice sending and receiving the ARRL sections beforehand because my brain is trained for two letter states and some sections are three letters (Western Mass = WMA).

@@w4arb If you are going to look for a tuner for 705, pay attention to the LDG Z-11 Pro II. It can be controlled directly from the standard menu 705, 705 it understands it without problems. You just need to connect the control cable directly to 705. And it's cheaper than AH705, but better than mAT in my opinion.
@w4arb
@w4arb 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the tip, LDG makes great stuff! I have been using the Elecraft T1 with it mostly when I need a tuner. I also have an ATU-10 and it can be controlled natively by the 705 with just a simple 3.5mm cable. A lot of the time I use resonant antennas though.

You know you can could double dip and got POTA at the same time. WFD is very slow paced, my average contact was at 22wpm. Nobody was running above 30wpm.
@w4arb
@w4arb 8 месяцев назад
I know you're right and that was my original plan. Once I got there I realized that I didn't really read up on the procedures for WFD so I just stuck with POTA on a WARC band. Heh! It was a good time anyway. 73!
