I’m a passionate vertical antenna guy because… I have never successfully put a wire in a tree higher than about 13 feet. I look forward to getting out into parks near the Shenadoah Valley and working a lot it CW. But at this point in history my CW station callsign will include “ /qrs “

All you need is an arborist throw line. It'll change your world in terms of deploying antennas in trees. I promise!

Hello Vlado!
@JayN4GO

Vlado is a Fb op. Contesting has become my first passion in Cw. Followed by pota. It’s really cool to visit a contest station and get your feet wet. We have an open door policy for anyone wanting to learn and have fun at n4ss. Fd is always my favorite bc I get to hang out with people I rarely see. Was down your way the first of the week Thomas. Such a beautiful place. I could see myself nestled on one of those mountains

Vlado is an amazing op, you're right! Hey--we'd love for you to settle down here in the mountains of WNC, OM!

Ha ha! A rare occurrence, but I actually do show my face in a few videos and certainly on live streams with other channels. :)

Thomas, I'm still new to POTA and have not done an activation yet. How does a Field Day contact from a park count as a POTA contact? Is it simply that you are operating from park? Do you have to send the park ID number? Or, is that actually not even required for POTA contacts?
@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL Год назад
So Field Day has a very defined exchange for the contact to be valid. The other op must log the full contact, the section, and the category (1B, 2A, etc.). While POTA has a convention for exchanges, it is not enforced because POTA isn't a contest. You really only need to log the station, time, mode, and frequency. Field Day (and many contests) don't allow self-spotting, so that day we did not spot ourselves on the POTA network. We simply logged our Field Day contacts per FD requirements, then (with a bit of log tweaking) uploaded the log to the POTA network. Any contact you make at a park--even when the other op isn't a POTA participant--counts as a POTA contact. I might share this reply, by the way, as a post on QRPer.com.

I love the ambiance of Holmes, but I seem to have interference every time I I activate there. The wife loves to walk around and enjoy the plants and wildlife.

Yes, I have run into RFI/QRM there before. There's actually a building and power lines very close by the main picnic area.

How do you keep Ticks off you?
@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL Год назад
We use Sawyer Permethrin spray on your regular hiking clothes and boots. It's incredibly effective, but you don't want it directly on your skin. I do use DEET in areas where I'm pretty sure I could pick up ticks. If nothing else, I spray it from my knees down, but sometimes on my arms, etc. if going into thick flora.

I have yet to venture out, and do FD on my own like that. I've always done it with the club (which don't get me wrong - is A LOT of fun!). I kinda feel obligated to go with the club, since I'm the only CW op they have. But, one year, I just may venture out on my own, and see what that's like. DE K7RLN
