QRP on Appalachian Trail

Showing off my compact portable low power (QRP) ham radio station that I take hiking with me on the Appalachian Trail. The radio, ATS III, was designed by Steve Weber, KD1JV and built by me. Steve created a kit including all the parts, bare circuit boards, toroid cores, wire and even the fine gauge solder. All parts are very tiny surface mount components which required several evenings of a few hours each session while wearing magnifying loops to place and solder each part. Multiple toroid coils also had to be wound. The builders of this kit had to supply their own enclosure of which the Altoids tin seemed to be the favorite among all builders. The hand held iambic key is my own invention which allows me to use one hand for sending CW from any position whether it be standing, sitting or laying down inside my sleeping bag. This tiny one watt transceiver has allowed me to make contacts from coast to coast and border to border and beyond while taking up very little space in my pack and weighing in at under a pound.

I've been out with this exact setup many times, and had satisfying QSOs. That's the nice thing about Steve's rigs--you end up actually making contacts.

That is a totally cool setup! I've got the same rig but I've mothballed it as it's starting to get beat up and the buttons don't work so well anymore. Replaced it with the 3 band mtr. Love that tuner and keyer too! Hope to see some more of these types of videos. 73's

After a 20 year absence from CW, I broke out my NorCal 40A and made a few contacts. Pretty rough for me but that should come back quickly. Was a 20wpm+ guy back in the day. Been working mostly digital and SSB but love QRP. Cool setup. Looks like a mini wilderness rig with the band modules. I could see making that hand keyer with a tick chip if they are still available. 73

I've operated my 100 watt mobile at Grandfather mountain several times, in all cases skip was terrible only advantage was vhf and up. In fact. Listening to 20 meters while going up the mountain you can hear signal drop off. Hood luck operating QRP. Its the beach and marshes where I see the best HF.

Thanks for your comment about the hand held iambic key. It allows me to send CW with one hand while the other hand is doing other things (writing, adjusting the radio, while I'm eating, or while I'm laying in my warm sleeping bag). It's made with a couple 35 mm film canisters nested and a couple SPST micro switches. Variations could easily be made with other switches with small apddles over them and the handle could be made from PVC or even carved from wood. I made the one you see in the video very light weight for hiking on the trail. More information about the UD key can be found at www.dxzone.com/dx28801/the-ud-a-light-weight-iambic-key-.html.73 and enjoy,KC8UD

Would love to see a video on your joystick paddle, this looks like a wonderful idea. Does it include the Iambic circuitry or is it just a paddle? Looks like two microswitches?

gsansoucie Second the motion! The idea of lying in my sleeping bag on a rainy night, 'chewing away, is very attractive.

I'd love to know more about that key. It looks like a couple of cherry blues mounted in some PVC. Is that correct? How easy is it to us? Can you write with one hand and send with the other?

Anybody know where I where I can get the full schematics and parts list to make at ATS3 with band modules, (ats3b maybe?), and the tuner in this video?

You will find manuals, schematics and photos on the ATS group on Yahoo. groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/AT_Sprint/files/ATS-3B/ You may have to join the group in order to view or download the files. Also search for KD1JV, Steve Weber, the designer.

Appalachian is pronounced with a short "a" in the middle -- like App-a-LATCH-ian ... not LAYTCH. From a native. :D
