This tutorial is also valid for the model PLX1202, PLX1602, PLX2402 and PLX3002, as they are all based on the same circuit board. Parts of this tutorial, somehow, also apply to PA amps from other manufacturers, like: Crest, Crown, Behringer, EV, Dynacord, Yamaha, LAB Gruppen, Powersoft, dB Technologies. The mechanical construction is often the same, and so are the problems.

In this episode I will show you all the different sections of a QSC PLX series power amplifier. Let's repair this thing.
The QSC PLX3402 is a rackmount public address amplifier. 2U. Analog amp, with switch mode power supply. IGBT's in chopper section. XLR inputs. Speaker output on 4mm binding posts and Neutrik Speakon connectors.

(1:54) - I love the way the background music goes up a few dB when Max says: "...speaker outputs...". Nice touch.

In my server power supplies they are also really small transformers build in! For 650 Watts, they had so tiny heatsinks!! I send you later some pictures of it ;)

At 3:25 you see the HiPerFRED Epitaxial Diodes D72, D73, D84, D85 - these are for the positive and negative Hi-Rail's and can handle 30 Amp's at 400Volts. At 3:44 you see two of four Diodes D74, D75, D80, D81- these are for the positive and negative Mid-Rail's and can handle 15Amp's at 200Volts.

I just picked up a Peavey power amplifier.. Plugged it in.. It powered on for a second, made the lights in my house flicker, then blew the back fuse... Would shorted transistors cause it to blow a fuse?!?

I bought one of this on ebay (used). I don't have a speaker to test it now. I plugged it in, The power indicator light turns on. I wonder if the fan should run too upon turning on the unit? Thank you in advance for response.

Hey! I have a plx2402 that works alright but when I turn it off, one of the channels (just n2) creates a very loud pop. I connected the output of it to a scope and saw a very big spike at turn off. I have 167.5V at each rail of the power supply (measured across the big blue eletrolytics). Signal at normal operation is clean and both channels are matched. I would like to know your opinion on this. What should I suspect? Many thanks

Hi! I have a very similar amplifier that needs repair. Do you do outside work? Or work directly with anyone for an amp repair? I don't think I can do it myself. If so please let me know! Awesome video by the way.

I think we had exactly those amps at my high school for the auditorium. Blew the ass out of the rectifiers diodes on one (BR1 on yours) same exact failure! Overheated that section. Caps were good though (Nippon and CDE, but I didn't know that those were best of best at the time). I had to get out vice grips too! That's been a long time ago...might not have been same manufacturer but I'll be a monkeys uncle if it wasn't identical.

you are using the plyers on the first 2 scews at least wrong.If you turn the handle and plyers the other way and draging instead off pushing the handle off plyers,you will get lot more gripping foce on the screws.those plyers are constructed so if used the rigth way it grips automaticly much harder at the same time as you drag the handle if i remeber correct?like the video.innteresting.do some amp building and repair for some 30 years.always somthing new to learn about different types of amps:

Ok here’s the deal …I think…, The switch mode is on full all the time, operating like a traditional power supply, it has 5 V across it error amp at all times… The energy is stored in the caps like a traditional amp, for fast transient response, I thought pulse width modulation is how it would control current to the speakers but evidently it is not fast enough?but it is also could be why it blows the crap out of everything when it fails If I ever get this thing working I will test the over current shut down

Hi, so interested in your video, if I may ask. I have one power amp of QSC which is 120v input and in my country we are on 230v . I wonder if the switched mode power supply of these amp's can be converted to take in 230v instead of 120v and avoid the use of step down transformer
@MaxKoschuh
@MaxKoschuh 7 лет назад
Hi Otiesh. Depends on the model. Please refer to the operators manual, or check the service manual. I am not an QSC-expert. Thanks for your comment. You are welcome. Kind regards, Max

Generally they are bought in the voltage setting that will be used. Some pro audio gear has a switch adjacent to the fuse or power connector that will allow 230V to be used.

sanjay gadhave did you ever figure out what was wrong? My switch wasn’t working reliably for a few years so we always just left it on and unplugged the IEC cable when not in use. Then one day it would not power up.
