Québec City Motorcycle Trip

Québec City proves difficult to ride. The city walls prohibit motorcyclists, the rain is relentless and the off-road terrain is a local secret. We persevere and find a brilliant motorcycle trip in the province’s crown jewel.

Wow. I know I’m writing this years later but I have to let you know. I’m from Australia. My wife and I had a planned a trip to Canada in 2020. We were planning on driving across in a motor home with our two kids. We were so excited. Then COVID hit and we had to cancel the whole thing. Man it was devastating. So watching this series is really nice. We would love to come to Canada one day and I’m sure we will. Till then this is the best thing I’ve got. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure motos aren't allowed in Old Quebec because of the cobblestone. My dad says he hit some of that once in England and almost lost the bike. Those slick, rounded cobblestone bricks are like ice when wet.

Yep, we even have straight concrete on some roads... now THATS dangerous when wet... imagine a nice cute puddle on top of that 🤦‍♂️

basically every italian town or village center has main plaza and inner streets made out of cobblestone, but most are just pedestrian zone anyways

Your last line is very profound. Often when I discuss Canadian cities with people they tend to emphasize the negatives such as, "Vancouver is overpriced, rains too much" or "Toronto is all concrete, too humid and too cold." I think each city is what you make of it, and as well as your point about welcoming residents. Awesome video, keep em coming!

Ryan, i LOVE these videos. They're exactly what i need to see to get me out on the bike and not care too much about the rain. I live in Scotland so we get the wettest of the weather and not a great deal of warmth to follow it up. Just bought myself an F800R and i'm itching to take it out. Still a new rider so there's a slight bit of trepidation, especially when it's frosty and in minus figures. Any tips for a new guy?

Hey, congrats on getting into motorcycling! *Focus* is everything when it comes to motorcycle safety. Your mind should always be working - anticipating possible dangers, making smart lane choices, checking blind spots, mirrors, escape routes, etc. Obviously cold and wet weather makes the roads slippery. But I think the main danger is that it's *hard to focus* during a chilly ride. So wear more layers than you think you need, and take lots of breaks. If you feel yourself tightening up on the bike and thinking about the cold, pull into the nearest cafe and warm up! ~RyanF9
@krismargett
@krismargett 7 лет назад
Yeah, I saw your vlog on motorcycle deaths Vs car deaths. The UK motorcycle course teaches everything about shoulder checks and blind spots. Got all the gear (for warmth, as well as protection) and my commute is only about 40 mins so all in all I think I _should_ be okay. Keep up the beautiful videos and great reviews. I'll be looking for a budget low wind noise helmet at some point, so if you haven't made a list yet, please do. Cheers.
@FortNine

Cool - enjoy that commute! I've got a Quietest Helmets video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GO6guuJtPkM.html). From that list I'd recommend taking a look at the Shoei Qwest. It also made my Safest Helmets video and it's pretty old at this point, so you can normally pick one up for a decent price. Cheers, ~RyanF9

Really cool video Have to ask though, Why is Quebec not motorcycle friendly?
@FortNine
@FortNine 8 лет назад
+Cohiba Great question! From what I understand, there are two answers. Officially, Quebec doesn't like the fact that some motorcyclists use loud pipes and therefore disturb the peace. Unofficially, there was a lot of biker gang activity in Quebec once upon a time, and that resulted in animosity towards motorcyclists in general, which in turn resulted in the law that bans motorcycles from Vieux Quebec. Either way, I disagree. ~RyanF9
@JobDraconis
@JobDraconis 8 лет назад
+FortNine On a side note, since I live in Québec, it's only inside the walls that motorcycles aren't allowed. You can ride 99.9% of the city. The motorcycles gangs are the first reason, there is a few cities next to the A20 that have the same rules. Sadly, or hopefully, the rules are outdated and the higher class people that lives inside the wall try to keep that ruling to avoid motorcycles loud pipes to enter their holy grounds; they just don't understand that a CIVIC can and usually make more noise than modern bikes. Most of the motorcycle gang drama is over.

@Davmm96
@Davmm96 3 года назад
Sad but it makes sense to lock motorbikes due to steep, stoned roads in some parts. But mostly it's because of north american motorbike culture; Most of what people see is loud as heck Harleys that a guy who only rides in sunny week-end wouldn't have the skills to ride in more slow technical stuff like a tight european city center. However the roads are more roundy-doundy in the area because of that.

@FortNine
@FortNine 8 лет назад
Two culprits there. 1- the city might be afraid of loud pipes disturbing the peace. And 2- the cobblestone roads are a little sketchy on bikes with skinny tires. Personally, I think #1 is the real reason behind the "no motorcycles" law in Quebec City. ~RyanF9

It's only within the citadel that you can't ride, which is about 0.4 square km. Champlain, the Old Port, the Plains of Abraham, etc... There's more to Quebec City than Old Quebec and the citadel ;) Obviously, everyone with an adventure bike must go through the Jacques-Cartier National Park... 60km+ for the round-trip from the main camp to the end of the dirt road and back.

Just pure discrimination. Only to be found in Quebec. All because of loud pipes. But hey your sports car with loud exhaust no problem. Nothing to do with safety. Gives “Je me souviens” a whole new meaning.

So in a very old, dense, European-style city, they thought not allowing motorcycles was a smart thing? I mean the US and Canada are both stupid about lane splitting, but no motorcycles at all?

If I was thinking about going to a city, and there was a no motorcycle sign, I would have to tell the city to go have coitus with itself because if you let cars come in and horse strong carriages not to let motorcycles in is stupid and they’re saying that they don’t want any tourism money that I may bring so screw them
