Send the cases back to Quad in Huntington UK. They will sand blast the postcode out and re-paint them for you. They did this for me when i bought a second hand 34 with bad scratches on the top. I telephoned them first and they said.. just send them and pay for the return postage and we will paint them for free. I have always found them very helpful.
Thanks, I did not know they did that. There is a company in Belgium that does it (but not for free) but, as I say in the video, I sold those ones. Btw I had them recapped (306 + 34) and they sound amazing.
I've had my Quad 405 power amp since 1977. Five years ago, I had it overhauled - recapped, re-wired, updated cable connectors. Now good as new, it drives a pair of ADS 1230 speakers. Quality gear lasts.
I have this set up exactly but I use two 306 power amps and it massively improves the sound. Rogers speakers and a B&W active sub-woofer. For piano, chamber music and leider it is just beautiful. For heavy rock, too refined.
@@theaudiophilebarista2424 I have Harbeth P3ESR's right now and a Quad Vena amp. Hoping that the 606 will bring the Harbeth's to life a bit more, but I might be asking too much of a small speaker. Ideally I would like Quad electrostatics but I don't have the room size unfortunately. I heard the Dynaudio Evoke 20 and that was pretty good.
Never saw the Aeropress before. U Learn something new everyday. Love the look of that Quad. Wish I could have my rack look like it’s floating! The SoundArtist’s sound nice for a small speaker. I’ve never liked having to turn up the volume that high to push speakers. That’s just me, though.
Yes I like the look of the Quad in that original rack very much. Too bad the matching stand is terrible looking. - The Aeropress is a great little device that can make a real good cup of coffee for not too much money. Great for traveling too
I have the Quad 306 but I’m using it with the preamp 7 series NAD ( disconnected the main Amp section by removing the Two links) into a pair of circa 1976 Roger’s LS35A’s linn sondes /Ruark 5 CD amazing detail and very loud
I have one of these sets in perfect condition in a Quad rack too, Keep it around just because it’s so good looking. But the one I’m using daily is my Vena/Z1 combo.
The additional unmarked sockets on the 34 preamp is an extra output which can be used for a second tape recorder or more usefully an external headphone amplifier. If used for another tape recorder you won’t be able to dub one recorder to the next. This is explained in the 34 manual in the later pages. Hope that helps!
Thanks. I don’t have the manual and I could only find the one with the older din connections online. I later found out they even recommend to use that output with a STAX headphone amp. Still have to give that a try because I do own a STAX. - thanks for your comment 👍

I had the last 11 ohm version of the British, Rogers LS35A paired with a QUAD 34/405-2 combination and it sounded good. However, I replaced the QUAD equipment with a Mark Levinson 29 Amplifier (50 watts) and Mark Levinson Model 28 Preamplifier - wow, night and day difference.
Hoi ivar de quad set ziet er heel mooi uit Ik heb een 405 gehad van quad. Ik ben benieuwd wat je van de ls3/5 a vind. Ik heb mijn jm lab,s verkocht en draai nu met kleine monitoren van dunlop. Speeld geweldig maar kan niks vinden over deze speakers op internet. Ik vond het laag van de jm lab te wollig na lang luisteren en werd er moe van. De dunlop,s geven minder laag maar het mid en hoog is geweldig mooi zo sprankelend en zuiver. Ik heb ook mijn audioquest speaker kabel vervangen voor een cord oddesy 2 kabel. Wauw wat een verschil niet normaal zo veel beter nu. De koffie zag er weer heerlijk uit. Mvg André de vries.
I had this unit was amazing sound best you can get in stero sound. 34 /306 had same! Never knew about the stand. Speakers you have are not good enough for that Amp best to go with B&O.
I have the same system...only problem is..no headphone output...sometimes I like to Blow my Eardrums through my Roland Headphones and not upset the neighbours
I have exactly this combo except that I have two power amps. Would love some speaker recommendations. At present I am using Rogers BBC monitors and a B&W woofer

Love Quad gear! So the general lore is that Quad preamps hold back Quad power amps in terms of sonics. I recall this being true with the 99 preamp and 909 power amp, where I almost bought a 909 but found the 99 to be unexceptional. Any chance that during your evaluation you could try the 306 with a couple of preamps to see how it performs? Also, an interesting thing about the 306 is that it is bridgeable. So if you had 2, you could run each as a monoblock, presumably to provide enough power to the legendary speakers that might have been purchased with the 306: the Quad ESL63s.
terrywho22 I may try it with a different pre-amp but for now I am focused on the LS3/5A loudspeakers. Unfortunately my main pre-amp is out of order at the moment. Needs some attention. It is 30 years old so it is to be expected every now and then. The power supply is making some strange noises. I would love to have a full Quad system some day with the ESL63’s. But where would I put it?

many years ago I use to have a quad system but my late wife hated "wires" every where so I sold it, what a regret! anyway the system i had was a quad 306amp, but the pre amp combo was sloppy and the tonal rage etc so laid back it was horrible, and the lack of imputs was a limiting factor, and then the price was a killer! so I tried the Rotel RC 971 preamp, what a game changer! the sound was outstanding ! it was lively, the depth and quality was fantastic, and it had loads of inputs and out puts, and to top it off it cost me £130 at the time in comparison to £400 for the quad.
Love my Aeropress! like you i have a number of brewers, and if i was forced to choose, that one would be my 'indispensable' one. So many different fun ways to tweak one's Aeropress brew. (btw, mine's even been to Rotterdam; it's my trusted travel companion, at least in pre-pandemic days) Speaking of Quad, do you have any experience with Quad 24 tube preamp? I see one for sale in my local e-classifieds. they are asking $500, which doesn't seem too bad. I'm thinking it could be a nice '2nd preamp' to have fun with. But i really have no personal experience w/ the model; i assume they tuned it to complement their tube amps and their ESL speakers.

I had the 34 and the 44. I prefer the 44. I have the FM4, but I never had the FM3. That is all I can tell you. Are you using QUAD?
@@theaudiophilebarista2424 Thank you for your reply. In his youth, my father had a set of QUAD 405, 44, FM 4, and he told me that they were the best devices of all in that class, that there was nothing better. So I also plan to get QUAD devices 405, 44, FM4 soon, and that will be my forever.
HH Scott I read the manual 5 times and if I understand correctly (the way they describe it is horrible) you can switch that empty input PLUS the CD input into a second tapedeck connection (play/record)? You need to make some adjustments inside the preamp for that. Ever heard of that?
I noticed your speaker wires don't have any pants on them. IMO the wires looks much more finished looking with pants on. Nice QUAD set. Really like the look of the heat sink on the front of the amplifier.
donald chisholm Well spotted 😁 The connectors on the SoundArtist equipment were a bit more spaced out so I had to improvise and widen them on the go. I never use pants, but I will clean it up later 👍

Hi there, here is what I can say about it: - First off, ‘Best sound’ is a subjective term. I might like the sound while you might not like it. - With that out of the way, I think it is save to say that a 34 or 44 pre amp combined with a 306 or 405-2 will give you the friendly, easy going sound that Quad is famous for. - What kind of music do you like and what loudspeaker do you use if I may ask? - Hope this helps. @@nickking8317 Well, it's not a copper loudspeaker cable 🤭 So I mean a cable with silver conductors instead of copper or silverplated. It may bring some more sparkle to the sound
@@theaudiophilebarista2424 The RCA pair on the rear that you did not know what it was for.... it is a 2nd output. You can this output to feed a headphone amp or another 306 for bi-wired speakers. I think the stand looks good with two 306 and one 34. With mine... I never did like the FM4, so i took l it out and put in another 306
