QUAD 44 Amplifier Repair
This amplifier came in with the report of low output on the Left Channel. Tests confirmed this and after a lot of searching I managed to find the correct circuit diagrem for it, there being quite a number of variations and modifications during production.
I traced the fault to the switching betreen MONO and BALANCE and then discovered a loose connection. Actually, it was visible much earlier, I just didn't see it.
Reconnecting the loose resistor restored normal operation

Too many years ago to admit to, I had a Quad 22 with left and right power amps, all valves. When I they needed a service I rang up Quad in Cambridge. Even before I spoke to a technician the girl on the switchboard knew exactly what I was talking about as to the model manufacturer date denoted by the inside circuit boards. Alphabetical or numerical. Also what valve numbers. I duely sent it off and it was returned within seven working days BEFORE I was even sent a bill! Their service was amazing.

Ahhh, the days of good quality British Service. I used to belong to the elite trade that took pride in their work, and traced faults to component level. Now it's a swap and chuck the stuff back to the factory for a rework - board swap.

Nice video. IAG: International Audio Group. Bought several prestigious British hi-fi companies. Quad being one. Others included Mission, Wharfdale and McLaren. It is a Chinese company owned by two brothers.

Thanks for this. I have a QUAD 44 with a similar fault. The left-hand channel sounds different from the right. The right hand channel sounds bright but the base is thin the left-hand channel sounds full bodied with deep bass. i’ve been trying to solve this problem for years so hopefully I’ll zoom in on the tone control board and see if I can spot anything that doesn’t look rightt perhaps if not you might be able to assist thank you
