You absolutely do not need an installation kit. The Kickers mount perfectly on the existing mounting studs. Just unbolt the old speakers, place the Kickers over the old mounting studs, secure then with the original sheetmetal nuts. Wire them up and enjoy. They sound great. I just did this on my 1987 YJ.
Looks like a lot of work, I folded my window took dash loose had much more room with no need to drill at all. I can see how this kit would work for someone who doesn't want to go through that. In my opinion it is easier just to loosen dash though, good video I'm sure its going to help many with questions.
I'm sure this way is best for you and others. However, since my windshield on my 91 folds down pretty easily, I'll do it that way. If a windshield does not fold down as it's never been down, PB blaster or WD40 in the holes on the hinge , along with tapping being and careful not to hurt your paint, works fine most of the time. On my 88, since I was replacing the bracket for a stainless steel one, I used a plumbers torch, lube, and a brass hammer until it freed up. Wala, windshield down, replaced that gasket under it while it was accessible, (they leak eventually), and new marine type speakers sound great! Good luck!
Great video and very informative. Not sure what's up with some of these other comments. Of course you can fold your windshield or unbolt your entire dash.... but I sort of doubt that would be easier unless you have gigantic sausage fingers and can't get your hands up behind the sheet metal, which if that's the case I understand. Another big + about this kit is should you toast one of these speakers it will be much easier to replace in the future.
I'm confused why can't you just take off the windshield and take the entire speaker plate off ? I just got my YJ and the previous owners ghetto rigged the sound system to put in a kicker bass behind the seats . it was kind of cool bye added a lot of weight got in the way and the amp was on the floor just not good for things I'm going to do in the Jeep .
For me it was about the time and cost. Wasn't looking for a huge investment and wanted it done quickly. The speakers also sound really good for the price.
Why are you out of breath the entire time?.. kind of hard to want to keep watching, but it’s much easier to just loosen the dash then to do everything blindly and squeeze your hand back there the entire time.
